Title: Kite Simulator
Post by: Geoffrey Platt on June 15, 2009, 08:02 AM
Well I have been thinking (not such a good idea sometimes :)) and have been looking at a few kite simulators for the PC, but have not seen anything worth while or up to date. I am not a game programmer, and personally do not have time to learn. But I thought it would be really cool if some one could invent a simulator that has a couple of spring tensioned sensitized kite lines. maybe a USB device? then made a simulator that would interface with the kite line module. Then it would be a question of modeling the different brands of kites and simulating them. It would be a great way to learn to fly or learn new tricks. Could also make the game to have real time online competitions (worldwide!). It would be great for us in landers where there is not very much wind most of the time. I think it would be a great product and would be quite easy to port to a Nintendo Wii (you could use two controllers or a controller and a nun chuck as the kite lines). Just a thought, so does anyone program, or develop computer peripherals??? 8)

NO WIND!!!! :(

Surely you must have SOMETHING in the bag, that will flying in no wind.  ::)  Crappy wind would be another matter.

Unless you want the line interface for user feedback, I think it might be superfluous.  Something like a Wii type controller should be able to measure the strength of your inputs (accelerometer might need to be added).

I was out yesterday in 95 degree weather with my pro wren. Not too much fun, hot as hell and was not easy keeping the kite in the air let alone do any tricks. It's easier flying indoors when you have the chance, at least there's air conditioning!

The line interface would be for user feedback (line tension / pressure / change in tension in different wind conditions / etc)

It's just a thought. Don't ge me wrong, I love my kites and love flying them. I just wish I could more often. This would allow me to fly when ever I wanted and would most certainly get more people interested in the sport.

I figured as much, it is the same idea as adjusting the lean resistance, depending on what the "virtual speed" is, in a motorcycle simulator.  Strictly speaking not required, but adds a bit of versimilitude.

Understood.  Some nights it would be nice if there was a recognized park to night fly in my neck of the woods that didn't require a police escort.  A regular indoor venue during the dog days of summer would be equally appreciated.  In some respects, I am envious of folks that can take advantage of stuff like this in campus environments.
