Title: R2/230 Speedkite
Post by: ae on September 06, 2013, 01:29 PM
Hi,

Picture and videos of my newest speedkite creation, the Rapier 2, wingspan 230, in short R2/230

https://vimeo.com/73574671 (https://vimeo.com/73574671)

As can be seen, Some speedkites can do tricks, like the deadlaunch :)
Actually the R2 starts best that way.

As for flight characteristics, Its reasonable fast, pulls like a mull and has a rather limited wind window. But I guess that will grow when the wind picks up.

Love seeing pictures of speed kites.  They are a wild and rare beast here in the U.S.

That looks hard to fly.

Hard to launch .....

   .... from my limited experience.

Thanks guys,

Ad yes, launching a speedkite is usually the only trick they can do :)
Of course that depends on the model in question, but its the hardest part about them, and that can be a very hard part.

Kites like a Long Tiger 2, you generally can't get off the ground at all without knowing what to do and be able to do it right.

Back in the day there was a speed kite called the Typhoon that was made in France.
It pulled like a truck and was arguably the fastest kite in the world. It looked very similar to this one, and since I've had
the experience of flying the Typhoon I have a very good idea of how this one flies. It's a pain to launch huh?

Hey Andre
After watching the videos you put up there I now have two questions......

Landing the turn things....you just drop them down the edge of the window.

Also, in a speed kite competition how does the judging work.
Wind speed changes all the time, so that would affect the 'playing field' wouldn't it?
And there are only so many models of the style of flying available.........

Hmmm.......

Thief:
Yes landing is done normally by flying to the edge of the wind window and setting it down.
Of course some fall out of the sky in other position, the forgiving person might call that also landing :)

wojtas:
See the link posted by Krjin, it is a easy to build speed kite that can also be scaled up or down for power or more speed. It is a solid flier that should provide a good deal of fun.

The smaller they are the faster they go?

That depends on the model in question, but in general yes, to a certain degree. To small and they get slower again.
But in generla the range of 5-7 feet is a solid range.
