Title: Custom graphics
Post by: KaoS on February 14, 2014, 12:55 AM
I recently got asked to make a sport kite.  A photo of a rough sketch of an idea for a graphic design came via email, with the heading "Is this possible?"

This is what I came up with...

I think I did okay  :-\

I'm reminded of the scene in Young Frankenstein when Igor (Marty Feldman) draws a sketch of the monster and Herr Doctor (Gene Wilder) says "I think you've got something there".

Q1: Is there a meaning behind the graphic or simply abstract?

Q2: Did you make full templates or more of a freehand/applique technique?

Nice work  :)

I too think it looks good... And curious if the design represents anything specific, as I don't recognize it.

Did you use a particular kite as your base model?

The design is purely abstract from the mind of the buyer.  He is the head wheelwright and coachbuilder at Sovereign Hill (http://www.sovereignhill.com.au/visit/what-s-on/trades-crafts-stores/) in Victoria, Australia.

*Moderators - remove link if necessary*

The base kite is a Temptation (I designed it in 2006, but it's still going strong).

A slightly "dumbed down" version is being produced commercially.

WinterDaze started a thread back here (http://www.gwtwforum.com/index.php?topic=2177.10) - it has a video of me flying the commercial version.

When making custom versions I use templates for the standard layout, but if someone asks for custom graphics I print a full size pattern using a wide format printer, then hot cut directly on the pattern (freehand).  I'm getting pretty good at freehand cutting, I do the majority of the hotcutting for OzFeathers banners  ;D

Isn't it obvious?  It's a Mexican wrestling mask:  (http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/wrestling-mexican-lucha-masks-13933863.jpg)

Very neatly done! Good work, indeed!

I don't agree, it is more of a Kandinski

or Miró
