Title: GWTW - Solid Gold
Post by: stapp59 on July 18, 2014, 05:48 PM
I'd say the last 15 years of service, knowledge, advice, this forum, and friendship from GWTW has been solid gold.  Oh, did I mention kites?

Steve and Chris, thanks for all you've done for us.

All the best,
Steve

Feel free to add to the superlatives  :)

long ago on a planet far far away ...
there was a guy (Dan) that ran a really, really popular online kite store (Gone With the Wind Kites) and wanted to get out of the business
He turned it over to his friends (Steve and Chris) that really didn't want to work for a giraffe any more
So December of 2001 they loaded up the GWTW store and Forum into a Ryder rental truck and moved it lock stock and ground stake to Chico (home of Sierra Nevada Beer)
The couple ran GWTW (some say into the ground) for quite a few years, along the way introducing North American kite flyers to a number of really cool kites (most notably some cutting edge kites from Europe and Blue Moon).
In January of 2013 the new guy (Steve) had a stroke and eventually he and the girl (Chris) closed up operation and moved to Orangevale to live with family.

hopefully happily ever after

Thanks Steve and Chris for all you have done over the years for me personally and for the kiting community.   It's been a great flight.  Smooth winds.

A big thanks to you & Chris (and DanW) straight from the heart.
Some of my happiest times have been spent 75' from one of your kites.

Steve, you and Chris have been good friends over the years, from the beginning when you guys took over from Dan and still are.  I'll never foeget the only time we ever met at the the 2003 Long Beach festival.  That was a blast.Things have changed since then -- a LOT OF CHANGE in fact.  You  two are still good friends and on my list of special people.  Your help, advice, service, friendship, integrity and support are much appreciated.
May you and Chris realize and enjoy the ''happily ever-after years.'' Gardner

I cannot say enough nice things about Chris and Steve.
Their knowledge of kiting is unsurpassed, be it high end kites imported in and sold here (Nirvanas) or boutique kites made in the us (blue moon)or production kites (Prism,  I don't think people realize how much Steve has Mark from prism's ear and how much Steve had helped grow prism's  business.

Long live gwtw.

Thanks Steve and Chris. For helping all new fliers by providing a place for them to ask questions, grow their skills and to share. Thanks for the guiding to fix the breaks that new fliers have and for the great service to get parts and kites to those fliers so they can get in the air.

My start in kites would have never happened if it wasn't for Gone With The Wind Kites and this forum.

Steve and Chris get the Lazar Pro Gold Award from me as well. The forum, your knowledgeable service, kite selection, shipping expedience, and all around fun to deal with-ness will be greatly missed and reminisced fondly for years (perhaps eons) to come! I ALSO LOVED THE BLUE MOON WORKSHOP!!!

And in that entire narrative, there was no mention of purple kites or TrickTails.

I'm shocked I tell you.... simply shocked.   ??? ??? ???

Let me fix that for you.

:D   One of the things I shared with Steve!  ;D

I first saw this thread soon after stapp posted but, since I was on the eastern slope visiting my kids and relegated to my phone, waited to post until returning home a short time ago. I apologize for the delay, Steve and Chris, but my thoughts are non-the-less sincere.

Yes, the end of an era, one that I was happy to be privileged to share. I learned so much from Steve, on the forum and during those phone chats I enjoyed, and from other forum members. I had the pleasure to visit the GWTW Chico digs for Kmac's second workshop with the Muse, and spent time in person with Steve, Chris and the group. I've met other forum members through forum activities, emails and, later, at festivals, OKR, Ft Worden and QISC to name just a few. Many ongoing friendships developed from the forum, and other members I hope to meet in the future (remember that stapp  ;) ).  Oh yeah, then there were the kites and I blame Steve entirely for my obsession.  :D

So, while you may no longer be selling kites, Steve, I will always value the years that you did, the forum that you have provided us all, and the joy you brought to me and many others. My best wishes continue to be with you, Steve and Chris, and your families in whatever the future brings your way.

Thanks for putting this forum out here for all of us.  I'm quite sure my addiction to this hobby would not have taken quite such an extreme turn were it not for the easy procurement of "supplies" for the addict, readily and all too easily available on the swap meet . . . .

When you enjoy the threads about hiding "kite shaped boxes" that arrive on your porch from your spouse . . . . then you know the forum has done a great job with all kinds of advice.

Thanks again.  Read something on here (almost) daily (except when work gets in the way).

You probably don't know me... I'm relatively new to kiting and GWTW. But, I wanted to add my thanks for providing such an informative and much needed resource for the kite pilot in all of us.

For me and my passion for kites... Ray Bethell started it all with his video "Romancing The Wind". But you guys have kept the fire burning with GWTWForum.

The next round is on me.   ;D
