Title: I WANT MY "ACTIVE TOPICS" BACK!
Post by: chilese on July 23, 2009, 12:25 PM
Sure, the new Forum has lots of gollygeewhizz features but,

The "Show unread posts since last visit" seems to have a mind of its own. Sometimes I get unread posts, sometimes not. And if I want to go back to the other recent threads, I have to click through all the unread posts first.

Petition starts here. I'll even contribute some bucks if it will somehow help get it back.  :'( :'(

Whatever it takes.

About once a week it loses track of me and I don't see a day's worth of posts (without digging).

I view the Forum from two computers and an iPod so there could be competing cookies or something, but it shouldn't be an issue.

Worse is when I open the Unread Posts page and see a dozen interesting threads but have to close the browser before I've read them all.

Ok, maybe this will help with your confusion.

When you click the "Show unread posts" link, it does just that.  It will show you all of the unread posts since your last visit - this is the same as "active topics" except if the active topic doesn't have anything new in it since your last visit - it wont show up again in the "Unread posts" until it does get something new...but that is what an active topic should be.

Now here's where the confusion is probably coming in.  When you click "Unread posts" and then click an active topic to read, fine.  But if you reply to that topic  - instead of returning you to the rest of your unread posts, it brings up a list of all other topics that are relative to the one you just replied to - which could be new unread posts and something from waaaaay back when.

So, once you reply to a topic, make sure to re-click the "Unread posts" link and you will be taken back to your original list of the rest of the "Unread posts since your last visit".

Hope that helps clarify what is going on.

This is the least user-friendly forum software for any forum that I visit.

Nope that doesn't have anything to do with it. Thanks, though.

It's two things, buggy behavior with the Forum remembering when I last visited (never an issue on the old system) and design limitations that only give you one pre-defined criteria for "unread".

You could always start your own forum and make it anyway you want ;)

Nope, I like this one just fine. Steve picked this software for a lot of good reasons.

I haven't had any problems, sure I miss the old "Only show active topics" feature but Steve did a lot of condensing so there are not sheer bulk you used to have to wade through so it's manageable.

I've been quite happy with the new forum, I'll take this over some of the others I visit any day.

What would it take for the software gurus to add an "Active Topics" to this software?

An hour or two of code maybe.  8)

I have found that I use the forum more that the old one. Besides in the real world we don't always get what we want it builds character. So if you don't like this format just look at is a character building exercise and deal with it.

The old forum content (kite reviews) would be of far more interest to me, over changing how i can view currently available topics.

I'll settle for what is offered though.   :-*

When I last checked New Posts there were 2 pages of unread posts.
I read a few and then several hours later logged in on another computer and there were only 5 or 6 New Posts.
What happened to all the others?

The forum software only keeps track of posts you have read during your current visit, not all posts you have ever read. The action is, strictly speaking, "Show unread posts since last visit". Since your first login, there were only 5 or 6 new posts, so that's all you saw upon your second login.

I seem to remember Steve having a list of reasons for changing all this forum stuff, a couple of which were cost and simplicity.  This software is free---that nails the cost part.  It also works pretty well right out of the box---there's some simplicity!  Adding "features" to these forums isn't necessarily simple, and an add-on that fixes one issue often causes three more problems.  It is what it is.

I once got some pretty good advice from a friend when a different forum I frequent changed their software, and here it is:

If you don't have anything better to do than bitch about how a stupid bulletin board works, you need to get yourself a new hobby.

It really is simple, you'll never miss a post ever, and in fact it's way better then the old forum as far as time involved if you just learn the new tricks.

Don't bother with the "read new posts" thing, log into the regular forum, if the kite icon is pointing at the forum heading (like website discussion) there have been new posts to that section of the forum so click in. Inside that section it's the same thing, if there are posts you haven't read the kite will be pointing at the threads with unread posts. Go read them, if you don't want to bother with some threads before clicking back out of that section click on "Mark all read" and it will clear those you didn't want to read. If you want to save a thread until later but there is a thread you don't care about you can open the unwanted thread(s) then click back, as long as you don't open a thread you want to save as new it will remain new.

It doesn't matter whether you've logged in 5 minutes ago or 3 weeks ago doing it this way. It doesn't matter if your coming in on 1 or 12 different computers, until you read the thread or click mark all read the forum will show you where any unread posts are lurking and take you directly to them.

That's the best part  :)  right to the unread posts

In the thread title you'll see a little icon that says "New" if you click that icon it takes you directly to the first unread post to that thread so you don't have to re-read a whole thread looking for where you left off - This is way better then the old software where you had to start at page 1 or guess which page you left off at and read through 5 pages to see where you were last time.

It really is simple, and better IMO

Sometimes, one would wish to reread a thread from maybe a few days ago.

In that case, the ability to view topics from a time interval say:

1 week ago or newer
1 day ago or newer

etc was extremely handy.

I do agree with the icon pointing being useful though.  :)

On another forum that I visit clicking a thread brings me automatically to the first Unread Post, even in threads with thousands of posts or dating years ago. I guess that spoiled me.
