Title: Deep Space, Talon what else ?
Post by: winfre on September 09, 2009, 01:05 AM
Hi,

I'm a french kiteflyer with an intermediate freestyle flying.

I'm trying to improve in freestyle.
I'm currently flying the R'Sky's Nirvana and I would like to try another kite that could either help me to improve.

What are the the most popular versatile freestyle kite in your country ?

I've eared about the Deep Space and the Talon. What do you think about it ?

Thanks

Niki

IMO the Talon & Deep Space are the most versatile freestyle kites made.  ;)

because of the euro dollar exchange rate, you might look at the BMK

The Organic's becoming popular here and I'll recommend that. Easy to trick. Unfortunately its an opensource design so not commercially available. IMHO, although both French the Nirvana and Organic are polar opposites from each other so its a good complement you have, depending on whether you are in the mood to muscle (Nirvana) fly or just chill out and finger fly (Organic)

Since you are from France, maybe you could get in touch with the designer Christian Derefat for it?

Christian will also build you one for sure.  He's cool like that.

BTW, Christian is Belgian, not French.  ;)
And the Organic can be bought directly from Christian.

a nebula would be good too. also a widowmaker from Jon at skyburner. those kites are a blast.
theres also the exile's and the muses/mantis', but im sure enough people will suggest those, so im sure i dont need to go into what they do and how great the BMK line is  :P

Thanks for your advices guys,

what would you recommend to me in the BMK kite collection ?

The thing I might be disapointed with the Nirvana is that it tugs quite much as the wind rises.

It's quite windy down here 10 to 20kts. But over 15kts I prefer kite surfing.

Darry, you're speaking of the Organic, isn't it a too radical kite ?
I 'm looking for a versatile one.

Deep Space, Talon, BMK kites, Organic, Nebula, Windowmaker...choice gone a be hard.
what would you say as the most popular versatile freestyle kite ?

Regards

Niki

You already have that mate ... the Nirvana.

If the winds are too big and/or bumpy you have 3 choices ...

Wind screens (R-Sky make some, Carl Robertshaw too)
Heavier lines ... 200lb
Or something vented (people seem to like the Talon vented, I like the Cosmic TC)

He said most popular versatile freestyle kite.
Not most popular antiquated competition kite.  :D
Besides, he also said he doesn't want a kite that pulls like a John Deere.  ;)

I don't think the Nirvana pulls any harder than the Vendetta.
But I think even you'd agree the V is a lot more fun to fly.
And may even be built a bit better.  ;)

The NSE is pretty awesome... Basically nirvana that flies even better. Somewhat similar feel but it can do much more than the FE, or at least makes it easier.

I think there is a slight confusion over terms. When most people refer to a freestyle kite, they mean something rather radical. A kite that tricks fast and smooth. Something like the nirvana is totally not a freestyle kite.

I have little experience outside some of my own designs in that sort of kite, so I can't say much about the various freestyle kites around.

You need a vent in 20+?

No ... in 20+ I go and do something else ...

Talon all the way,
I fly my UL 95% of the time from 2 - 10 a few times a little higher, Denny can contest to the wing shudder I was getting at 15+ :o

I 'm looking for a versatile one.

It is, as its capable of the extreme tricks. However I think it has very good balance in a fade and on its back. Pretty pitch as well as spin oriented. The easier or intermediate tricks do not get lost. Nice thing I like about it is how you are able to more easily control the trick speed, fast or slow.

However based on the high wind that you mentioned, maybe a Sea Devil Mid Vent is a good idea? Never flew one before but heard it has lesser pull than a Nirvana in high wind and for a Mid Vent it goes pretty low as well.

Sea Devil why not ?

Talon seems to have also go reviews as I can see.

The Deep Space might be more radical than the Talon.

Does any body have any feed back on the pull of those kites ?

thanks

Niki

With the Sea Devil you are also getting a Comp style kite much like your Nirvana, so some may feel it's a bit redundant.  On the other hand you de get a nice full size kite that pulls considerably less than the Nirvana with a sacrifice to precision.

As for the pull on the Talon and DS it's quite simple, they don't.  Both kites provide ample feedback, but don't require the flier to lean back.

Fearless - its looking like its the last kite I may ever buy.  :)

Light pull, flys well, and very eager to do tricks.  It does not have the precision of a (properly) tuned Nirvana, but its pretty good.  Trick-wise, its a dream.

The Deep Space has a fairly light to medium pull. Not bad at all.

This is true ... but its a real handful big winds ... it gets too quick.

I wouldn't fly mine above 10mph.

I fly mine in high winds.

It does get fast though.

regarding to your reviews, my heart seems bending for a Talon !

Which wind range would you consider for a std and for a UL ?

Does anybody have any picture of his Talon to share ?

thanks

Niki

UL is about 2 to 12
Std is about 4 to 25

I'm trying to choose between a std or an UL  :-\

looks like the UL is a bit better accomplished than the std...

wind array is quite wide for both.

Quote
UL is about 2 to 12
Std is about 4 to 25

whether anybody as a std and an UL, from which wind speed would you take your std rather than your UL ?

Can someone explain what "radical" means in this context?

It is not a precision kite.  ;D ;D

Picture of my Talon UL, front and back.....

Just got mine 2 days ago, and just canīt get enough flying it. Which today resulted in me flying it, in a bit high winds.... 5mph lows, average 9,5mph and gusts of several minutes going up to 17-18 mph. The strongest during the session was way over 20 mph, good fortune that the Talon UL was staked down, and I drinking coffee and eating a ham-sandwich when that monster roared. Phew....

But the point of the above : I flew my Talon UL today in windspeeds from 4,5 to 16-17 miles pr hour, and it stood up to it. I am not proud of it, and I wonīt do it again. I would say that above 10mph, I would take out another kite, and below 8 is where the Talon UL belongs. If I had a weather-controlling-device, I would set it to a steady 3-6mph, when I felt like flying my Talon UL.

Hope the above makes some form of sense, if not, say so, and I will try to clarify.
 ;)
