Title: itunes 9
Post by: DWayne on September 18, 2009, 09:30 PM
I downloaded itunes 9 today and it wiped out my itunes library.
76 albums gone.
All my video tutorials gone.
Nothing left at all.  :'(

Not that I have iTunes 9 yet, but I find it hard to believe that your old iTunes DB would get wiped out. I bet it's in a different spot and just needs to be imported to your new version. Apple software is whacky, but usually works pretty well. Looks like the library file is an XML format on my machine, and it's in the my documents > music folder. I hope that helps...

Sorry to hear that....I guess I better get an External Hard Drive for my Mac. Been procrastinating for too long.

I have Version 10.4.11       2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo    1GB 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM

At some point can I update to Snow Leopard? Or is my Mac too old? Would like to get that Time Machine feature. Would it be worth it?

I think you can update an Intel Mac no probs. Snow Leopard is well worth it IMHO.

I'm backing up to an Apple Time Capsule ... but I'm backing that up too ... to a disk in the office (in case of fire).

The files should be on the machine somewhere - search on *.mp4 or *.mp3 and you can re-import them.

Did you also check the trash?

I don't know if you are on a mac or not.  On my mac songs are not in the documents folder.  They are in music/itunes/itunes music.

Possible solution:http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451

Products Affected

iTunes 7 for Mac, iTunes 7 for Windows, iTunes 8 for Windows, iTunes 8 for Mac
Re-creating the iTunes Library file

Follow these steps:

   1. Quit iTunes.
   2. Locate your iTunes folder.
          * For Mac OS X the iTunes folder is stored in:

                /Users/[your username]/Music

          * For Microsoft Windows XP and 2000 the iTunes folder is stored in:

                \Documents and Settings\[your username]\My Documents\My Music\

          * For Microsoft Windows Vista the iTunes folder is stored in:

                \Users\[your username]\Music\

   3. Open your iTunes folder.
   4. Drag the iTunes Music Library.xml to the Desktop
   5. Drag the following file from your iTunes folder to the Trash:
          * Mac OS X: "iTunes Library" (in versions of iTunes prior to 4.9 this was called "iTunes 4 Music Library")
          * Microsoft Windows: "iTunes Library.itl" (in versions of iTunes prior to 4.9 this was called "iTunes 4 Music Library.itl")
   6. Open iTunes.

Tip: Do not add any content into iTunes at this point.
   7. Choose File > Library > Import Playlist.
   8. Navigate to the iTunes Music Library.xml file on the Desktop.
   9. Mac users: Click Choose.
      Windows users: Click Open.

After re-creating your library, any devices that you sync with iTunes (Apple TV, iPod, iPhone) will see your iTunes library as a new library and will completely resync."

If your Podcasts list in iTunes is empty after following these steps, see article HT2562.

If the iTunes Music Library.xml file is not available, see this document for steps to add files back to the Library (because the iTunes Music Library.xml file is not available, playlists and other information will not be available).

itunes won't even open any more.
But I can honestly say, it hasn't changed my opinion of Apple.  :-X

Denny:

Mine installed and ran fine.

If you are running a mac do you meet the following requirements:

Mac OS X version 10.4.11 or later; Mac OS X version 10.5 or later is required to play an iTunes LP or iTunes Extras
QuickTime 7.6 or later
Support for HE-AAC requires QuickTime 7.6.4 and Mac OS X version 10.5 or later
Safari 4 or later
200MB of available disk space

You are not alone on this.  Many are complaining of issues.
