Title: Sled with banner tail?
Post by: kwalispecial on September 24, 2009, 10:05 AM
I am looking to lighten my wallet a little bit, and I am thinking about getting a Power Sled 14, and I am wondering how it would do with a 25' banner tail. commercial link removed

Does anyone have any comments how how these are likely to do together?  I don't have a lot of experience with kites, and none with sleds or banner tails...

Thanks!

Sleds and banner tails are a natural ... go for it!

I really like the look of the new Stowaway Parafoil, but I am looking for something a little bigger, so I thought I'd try to replicate the "look".

Sleds & Banners go great together, here's a few that had some Organza tails that were just on fire in the sun.

Thanks for the pics, they help a lot! Those do look really nice!  They look like they are the Gomberg tails?  The ones I linked to above don't say anything about whether they hold a dowel, but I assume they must (you know what they say about assuming...).

I have been looking for someplace that has some sort of rainbow banner or pennant tail, but I haven't had any luck...  If anyone knows of one, let me know.

Those are Gomberg Pennants (as opposed to the streamers) flying on Super Sleds.  If one of those three color combos work for you then that might be the way to go ... The whole set up (without line) would run a bit less than $100.00 shipped.  If you need help making that happen drop me an email (steve@gwtwkites.com).  Of course if you have a local kite store I would encourage you to support them and buy local.

I took the plunge and bought the Premier Power Sled 14 and a Premier 25' Banner Tail.  I've given it a few tries already, and the wind wasn't up to the task the first two times - too light and variable.  The kite flew without the tail, but was having a hard time getting off the ground with it.  Today was a different story though.  I can't tell you the wind speed, but it was a decent breeze, and one of the steadiest I've ever seen at the nearby beach, both in speed and direction.  It flew great with or without the tail, the only real difference being the angle of the line.

Just for the heck of it I also conducted a small experiment.  I had my Canon point-n-click with me to get these pictures, so I put a little loop in the line (with the kite about 100' up already) and clipped the camera case onto it.  I let out about 5' of line, just to see how well the kite would lift it - no problem.  Definitely not a KAP rig, but it answered my question of feasibility.
