I can see a real name in the profile, but I like my username  :(  :'(  But, I carry a Coddington Loupe in my pocket, so I guess "different strokes" most definitely applies.  Oh well, pipers and tunes.  Glad to see the forum back.

Sam

this is my real name ... on the internet.
besides, it's familiarity which creates a sense of community, not government names.
whatever, his forums, his rules. i won't be registering.

doesn't mean i wouldn't buy his kites though.  :P

"it's familiarity which creates a sense of community"

See, I don't get that. I was kitehead for 8 years on the old forum, but always had my real name in my posts. After seeing dozens of instances where anonymous posting was a problem for the "community" I realized having a "handle" was fun, but counterproductive. After a few years it got old introducing myself as "Allen, kitehead on the forum" at events. Much easier using my real name.

How can actively remaining anonymous (no name or email address in the directory) create a sense of community? Also, I have a hard time doing kite deals with people who seem to have something to hide.

I'm not saying anonymous posting should be banned, I just think it used to be a cute internet thing and we should have outgrown by now.

it's not the kiting community i try and avoid, it's the data mining community.
after all, in my signature i tell you where to find me in person every week.

call me a nut, but i left a promising career in the glamorous side of advertising because of my conscience.

on the bmk forum you call me "actively anonymous" and this is untrue. i'm usefully anonymous. there are people on these forums who know me, know my name, know my phone number, and have even visited my home. just because you don't know me personally doesn't mean i'm hiding something.

anyway, before this all gets blown out of proportion i'll just say; i respect ken's right to make his own rules and should i choose to post there, i'd abide them, regardless of my opinion of them.

"it's familiarity which creates a sense of community"

See, I don't get that.
I interpreted that differently than you. If you have been active on multiple forums and or ebay etc etc using a handle over a period of time. The cummunity aspect is more about continuity of profiles.

Imagine going to your event and saying "Hi I'm Allen. Which forums do you frequent you might know me as something else?"

I never introduce myself as an internet handle.  I'm Andrew.  If who I am speaking to gives a damn about the internet forums thay can ask or infer my handle(s)? ;)

I have two indigo shirts with wolves on them, and a gray shirt with an indigo wolf on it (thanks, Melanie!!)...

They are considerably more visible than a small name tag with "Hi, My Name is Sam"

Not a big fan of name tags.... although there are exceptions  ;):

I expect most of the people I know online, I will never meet in person, so it is an apple and oranges thing.

Hey wait  ??? ... considering how misanthropic I can be some days, maybe I need to disqualify myself  from the topic :o  :(

Sam
