Title: The Ichibans are back!
Post by: Bob D on March 17, 2009, 04:08 PM
I just went to Blue Moon's site and saw that Ken's making Ichibans again! I gotta get me one of them! They are BEAUTIFUL kites!

What happened to the Reprise? I thought it was going to be the updated version of the Ichiban.

Good question. I like them both. I had asked Ken in a post last year about the Reprise and he wrote that he was too busy with the "bread and butter" kites. He also said that you never know what the future will bring so we can only hope.

Either way, I might like to see if I can swing an Ichiban this year. Maybe the 'boss' will let me use some of my job performance bonus towards a new SLK in May.

I went to Ken's site last week and saw that too. I had to double check just to make sure I was reading it right. A Ichiban would be good company for the Reprise.  Oooooo, stacking an Ichiban, and the Reprise, now that would be cool.  :)

Have Steve get you a matching Streamer Tail or Penant from Gomberg, they compliment each other nicely.

Great idea. That was going to be my next purchase. Is there one you prefer over the other?

Get the 45ft pennant, it gives it a "fuller" look. It also helps settle the kite down if the winds are gusty.

There you go, thanks Ian.

I don't have an Ichiban myself, have just seen them with these tails and they go together nicely.

Also, are there any pictures out there of an Ichiban with a pennant tail?

if it were a sunnier day the flying pix would have been better...but hey..happens...
i love it!!!i remember Ken bringing a very early on the KTAI and falling in love with it...and the lusting after them for years....
then the stars aligned and i got the last one that Ken had made....it was for himself....and it was perfect for me.....
and i do want a half size......
i would love to participate in an Ichiban fly at some point!!!! i do nto know if there are any others here in New England though...

2 ways:

same way as the old forum...for pictures up on the web you need to get the direct url for that picture (i prefer to right click and "copy image location" in firefox).....then come to your thread and hit the button above the first smiley...paste the line between the two img tags....
looks like (without the spaces in the tags): [ img]http://lh4.ggpht.com/_tbYkV1FmtY4/RwlbYYa9--I/AAAAAAAADHw/QWKaVxwacb4/s400/DSCN0611.JPG [ /img]

And then there is now a second way!!!
Click that additional options button below the post box....you can now attach a picture direct from your hard drive....the space that Steve is offering for this is limited so your picture might not be there for all eternity..but you can get a picture up that is not online already!!!!you are limited to size this way....but can still do it!!!!
you will then see a small image of your picture at the bottom of your post....click on it and it should get bigger....people can also directly download the picture as well....

good winds!

Thanks for all the pictures that include pennants.  Wish I  could have taken advantage of Ken's discount.  I still think I like the streamers better but the pennant does have its appeal.

The 45ft pennant looks much better than streamers, and give it a "full" look.

Hi Ian

Bryan,

It's not an Ichiban, it's called the Reprise. It's a prototype made after the Ichiban. The color is called Rubin red, just a bad picture, but the same kite as above.

When I got the Reprise I took it to the park on a Friday night to try it out. John Chilese (Godfather) was there as usual, and as usual, has his camera. I told him that I got the Reprise, he got all excited and went for his camera. Ken forgot to put the bridle in so I made a two leg bridle and attached it. The wind was light, 3-5 mph and and all I could do was high launches and watch it glide backwards. After a few of those I remembered seeing a picture of a Ichiban flying backwards. This is it, anyone knows who owns it?
I thought, let's see if the Reprise can fly backwards. I told John about this and he said to try it. Well, I turned the kite around and try a few high launches, maybe 30-40 ft. up. It glided pretty good so I tell John I'm going to let out more line. I ended up with about 150ft out and told John to stand the kite up. The tail acts like a canard when flying backwards and when I launched it, the kite went straight up, I mean straight up, almost at a 70 degree angle. When it reached the top, I let the line slack, the kite slid backwards then went nose down, I mean tail down. At that point being so high up I though it was just going to come straight down and crash. I let the line go and just watched. It started to glide down straight at me, literally, straight at me. It was coming down fast, but stable and straight. I didn't have to move, all I did was duck and caught the kite. I was freaking out. John was whooping and hollering and was just as excited as I was. That was very cool to see and do.
This is one of the pictures that John took, this is my favorite. It was taken after the backward flight.

I have a question or two regarding the pennant/streamer tail option.

Now, these questions are based on looking at Gomberg's site for the tails.  If there is another source, please let me know.

Anyway, I see the length of the streamer/pennant referenced at 45 feet a couple of places.

Looking at Gomberg's flat tails page:  http://www.gombergkites.com/e-stream.html#giant (http://www.gombergkites.com/e-stream.html#giant)

I see "single streamer flags" listed in two sizes:  2' x 75' and 13" x 35'

There's also "pennants" listed (with the black edging" at 3' x 25'

There's also the smallest Sutton Streamer at 5' x 50'

Which one of those 4 is used, or do you get a 45 footer somewhere else?

Also:  regarding the transition streamers.  What length is favored?  Am I assuming correctly that it would be a pair of 48 footers?

Thanks!

Title: Re: The Ichibans are back!
Post by: ainokea on April 13, 2009, 08:03 AM
The 45ft pennants used to be listed under the singlestreamer flag, now there's a 75ft one instead. Call David and ask him if he can make you a 45ft pennant. You can use whatever lenght you want, it's just a personal preferance. I use two sizes with my Reprise, 25ft and the 45ft, just depends on the winds.

My preference with the Ichiban is the 48' GKPI Transition Tail. It has great color interest and works in light winds as well as stronger winds. The length is a good match for the size of the kite. Kinda classy look.

I have a 75' GKPI Streamer Tail that I'll fly in higher winds with a rod in the leading edge sleeve, but it's too much in lighter winds. The 2' width of the 75' Streamer works well with the spread of the Ichiban longerons; I think the 3' wide pennants would be wider than that spread. While the Streamer makes a bolder color statement, there's not as much interest as the TTs IMO. Depends on your preference.

When I made tails for my QISC Ichiban, my choice was a pair of 50' TTs.

Here are a couple of pics of my Ichiban with the TTs and Streamer from a similar perspective. Also one of my QISC Ichiban.

No problem. I went through many colors, too.

We got three together at Long Beach in 2007 - Boomer, SKB and mine. Will you be at OR coast in July? WSIKF? AKA 2010? Two twins would be cool.

Trying for WSIKF, will depend on when my daughter goes off to college - may be moving her that week.  These kids have too many options for activities these days.  Makes it a little hard for Dad to schedule, may just go at the last minute.  Planning on making Swift Current next month - Jun 20-21, definitely taking the Ichiban!

Very nice looking kite.  :)

I am very pleased with it. I went with a color combination similar to my 61/49 (but not identical). It flew very nicely in light to moderate breezes for its maiden flight.
