Title: Kite Flyer or Kiteflier
Post by: the*real*stoney on December 29, 2009, 08:49 AM
We are the experts on flying kites, we ought to be in charge of the correct spelling. After all, aren't we (the kite flyers of the world) the experts on the subject? What do publishers of dictionaries know about kite flying anyway?
We should unite and demand that hereafter the person actually flying the kite (as opposed to the person flying the airplane containing a kite) shall be known as a Kite Flyer and that the individual flying a vehicle which transports kites from one kite field to another by air shall be known as a Kiteflier.
Of course, either the Single Line Kite Flyers or the Sport Kite Flyers will object to the term, and will argue that the term "kite flyer" should rightfully be applied to the person flying the kite while the person flying an airplane transporting the kite through the air must be known as the "Kiteflier".

A dreadful argument will ensue and the issue will eventually reach the Supreme Court where the issue will be decided - once and for all - that anyone apprehended flying a kite in any way will hereafter be known as "A TAXPAYER".

Humor aside, it is usage that decides these things.

So if you have a preference, by all means, use it.

I wouldn't mind if I were in the english speaking teritory

25 years ago in Holland i bought a button [e.g. road sign] saying "I am a european kiteflier".

when the dutch read this it sounds like "kit a flere".

Here's a bunch of stats on it from around the world

AKA, US (http://aka.kite.org/) - uses kitefliers

Other US clubs run 7 to 5 in favor of Flier (http://www.breezechasers.com/bc-clubs.htm), although it looks like we would rather avoid the debate and leave it out altogether (47)

AKA, Australia - uses the term kite flyers on thier site but not in the name

In England its 7 to 5 in favor of Flyers (http://www.bkfa.org.uk/node/19)

Scotland uses Flyers (http://www.bkfa.org.uk/node/19)

Canada is 4 to 0 in favor of kiteflier, with 1 abstaining (http://www.breezechasers.com/bc-clubs.htm)

And on Troy Gunn's Worldwide List of Clubs (http://tkogunn1.tripod.com/kiteclubs.htm) it runs 26 for flier, 24 for flyer, with 136 avoiding its use.

like anyone cares  ;)
