Title: Where do you fly?
Post by: tpatter on February 23, 2010, 09:56 PM
I mostly fly here (close to my house, but not the best wind):

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=gas+works+park,+seattle&sll=47.640179,-122.306328&sspn=0.148974,0.273628&ie=UTF8&hq=Gas+Works+Park&hnear=Gas+Works+Park,+Seattle,+WA+98103&t=h&ll=47.681454,-122.247963&spn=0.001824,0.004426&z=18 (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=gas+works+park,+seattle&sll=47.640179,-122.306328&sspn=0.148974,0.273628&ie=UTF8&hq=Gas+Works+Park&hnear=Gas+Works+Park,+Seattle,+WA+98103&t=h&ll=47.681454,-122.247963&spn=0.001824,0.004426&z=18)

sometimes here (often sweet wind, but treacherous terrain):

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=gas+works+park,+seattle&sll=47.640179,-122.306328&sspn=0.148974,0.273628&ie=UTF8&hq=Gas+Works+Park&hnear=Gas+Works+Park,+Seattle,+WA+98103&t=h&ll=47.645416,-122.336068&spn=0.001825,0.004426&z=18 (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=gas+works+park,+seattle&sll=47.640179,-122.306328&sspn=0.148974,0.273628&ie=UTF8&hq=Gas+Works+Park&hnear=Gas+Works+Park,+Seattle,+WA+98103&t=h&ll=47.645416,-122.336068&spn=0.001825,0.004426&z=18)

and once in a while here (real beach with sand and salt - nice offshore wind):

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=golden+gardens+seattle&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=44.60973,70.048828&ie=UTF8&hq=Golden+Gardens+Park&hnear=Golden+Gardens+Park,+Seattle,+WA+98117&t=h&ll=47.691472,-122.403783&spn=0.001824,0.004426&z=18 (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=golden+gardens+seattle&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=44.60973,70.048828&ie=UTF8&hq=Golden+Gardens+Park&hnear=Golden+Gardens+Park,+Seattle,+WA+98117&t=h&ll=47.691472,-122.403783&spn=0.001824,0.004426&z=18)

One nice thing about the Seattle area - all 3 spots have fantastic views.

This is the most likely spot that I fly, due to winds out of any direction, and it's close to my house...
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=&daddr=40.964912,-73.036616&hl=en&geocode=&mra=mi&mrsp=0&sz=16&sll=40.964863,-73.037624&sspn=0.011407,0.019205&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=16 (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=&daddr=40.964912,-73.036616&hl=en&geocode=&mra=mi&mrsp=0&sz=16&sll=40.964863,-73.037624&sspn=0.011407,0.019205&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=16)

Another good spot that I'll hit on my way home is this one, the highest point on Long Island...
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=40.964912,+-73.036616&daddr=40.841976,-73.015501&geocode=&hl=en&mra=mi&mrsp=1,0&sz=18&sll=40.841529,-73.015357&sspn=0.002857,0.004801&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=18 (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=40.964912,+-73.036616&daddr=40.841976,-73.015501&geocode=&hl=en&mra=mi&mrsp=1,0&sz=18&sll=40.841529,-73.015357&sspn=0.002857,0.004801&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=18)

There are lots of other spots, but these are the ones that I most frequently fly.

I would think it's dangerous to fly in the middle of an airport :)

Not an airport anymore!
the mayor closed it years ago.

Midway and Ohare are the two now

The first one is across the road and the 2nd one is on my way home from Kitchener Ontario. I try to stop for 1/2 to 3/4 of an hour if I can at the second place because the wind is a bit smoother. That is when there is a breeze.

Here are the places I fly often. I try to get to the beach as much as possible, but I seem to find myself more in the fields than on the beach :(...

Good to see Google finally updated the satellite imagery for that section of the beach... for the past couple of years, it's been showing the inlet as lapping at the foundation of the hotel :)

First spot (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&source=hp&q=udall+park+tucson+az&ie=UTF8&hq=udall+park&hnear=Tucson,+AZ&t=h&ll=32.249108,-110.835308&spn=0.002391,0.004823&z=18) is a local park, many fields available during the week so wind direction is not a problem. Good for morning until 3:30pm when the soccor, and baseball practice starts, too crowded on weekends/holidays

Second spot (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&source=hp&q=udall+park+tucson+az&ie=UTF8&hq=udall+park&hnear=Tucson,+AZ&t=h&ll=32.219055,-110.791073&spn=0.002392,0.004823&z=18) is behind a school, good on weekends if the wind direction is east or north
