Title: Do u wear gloves when flying kite ?
Post by: cids on March 14, 2010, 07:13 AM
I always wear a modern mechanic gloves(black/grey color) while flying kite all seasons. I bought the pair of gloves in Home Depot. Very comfortable and it offers protection from SUN, flying line cut etc.

Lately I'm looking at some very nice thin leather Baseball gloves from Mizuno. It looks very very nice.

Do u wear gloves when flying kite ?

That depends on the weather and what kite i'm flying.

If its cold, i wear gloves with all kites.
If i fly a powerkite that might drag me across the field or can lift me, i wear gloves.

And even in cold weather I use the thinnest gloves I can find

Gloves are "cold weather only" items... the thinnest I can get away with.

I usually keep gloves on hand for other people to wear when they ask to fly my stuff.

...cause you don't know where my hands have been.  ???

I never wear gloves when flying dual line kites. I often have to wear them as I walk the lines during the winter but they come off once I pick up the straps. If it's cold enough for me to need gloves when flying then it's cold enough to drive me indoors.

Of course all of this is nothing but personal preference. I do hope you've not come here looking for The Right Answer.  ;)

Mike.

if i'd started flying with glove and had gotten used to them it would be a good idead as you said to protect your hands but i didn't.

no gloves for me, i just lose too much feedback from the lines. i like to feel if a bumblebee fly's into my lines.

Petzl belay gloves for SLKs

A variety of gloves for powerkiting (Hillbilly's, Mechanix, Burton pipe-type gloves... still shopping through a couple of others)

Dual lines, less so, but if it's cold enough.

FWIW: a lot of the mechanic type gloves use synthetics for palms and fingers.... it's possible to get line moving through them fast enough to wear, melt, or transmit heat through.  There's a lot to be said for leather (vanilla or carbon variety) and multiple layers along the "rope path"... YMMV.

Gloves with a lot of snag points don't play well with active SLKs.  I expect that's why a lot of fighter types just tape up their fingers.

Sam

I try to get away with millers mitts most of the time when it's cold and wear leather belay gloves for SLK flying on the rare occasion when doing that.

For really cold weather flying I use Craft Siberian cross country gloves.

They are not as heavy as they sound, just heavy for cross country gloves.

I tend to damage my hands at work fairly often and will use full finger bike gloves in the warmer weather to protect them a bit sometimes.

But generally: No.

Never heard of them before.  Look nice...

Not particularly cheap, but...

Smooth or suede palms?

Sam

Possibly Synthetic though.

No. What little feel of the feed-back that I have with the lines to the kite is totallly lost with gloves.  ;)

+ 1, only for single kites.

single line only.......

back in the 90's there was a company/guy who sold sailing gloves with a metal hook on the palm for flying...his reasoning was that then you did not need handles (that was the usual way of holding your lines back then)......scary looking thing....you could b***h slap someone and take off their nose!!!

I dont wear gloves, even in the winter (unless it's cold AND has high winds).
If I flew single line, i'd imagine I would.

But until that day, no gloves.  :)

only with big SLK's or rokaku battles.  I have a pair of leather tactical gloves with a kevlar lining.

Only when it's super cold and then I usually take them off when I get warmed up.
