Great looking kite! I'm also starting my first build waiting on fabric & frame to arrive.

So I think this is as far as I'm going to go since I messed up the right wing

i screwed up the left wing on my first kite yet i was surprised how well it flew in the end. i'm not saying it ended up with a permanent home in my kite bag but i knew exactly how to correct the issues i had. i learned something.

i would encourage you to see it through. you're probably feeling down and frustrated at the moment but carry on. if you can fix it before moving ahead, do so. but if not, i'd still encourage you to finish.

ok, so it may not be perfect in the end, but once you see the thing in the air, it makes a huge difference in how you feel about the struggle.

it's a striking design, do you have a link to larger photos?

Title: Re: First build in progress
Post by: Untitled on March 23, 2010, 02:57 PM
I just started cutting the second build with different material.  The stuff I used for the first one is a lot stretchier then I thought it was going to be.  The stuff I have for the this round is Nylon but on the heavy side, they only had the colors in 1.5oz.  However I might finish it just to learn doing the Leading edges and trailing edges.

Link to the album is in my signature.

I think I've seen pictures of the build for the blue yellow green one.  Came out nice.

Title: Re: First build in progress
Post by: fidelio on March 25, 2010, 07:03 PM
lookin' good, lookin' good. you said the fabric on the first one was kinda stretchy, boy does it look it.

fitting folded dacron around curves really tested my patience, both on inside and outside curves, but just take your time, checking your fit often.

you certainly didn't take it easy first time out. that's a lot of curves and panels, but it looks like you're doing great. keep it up.

Yeah the stuff was really cheap at 2.50 a yard so I thought it be good material to try out the first build on.

hey bro bring them down to 4th st. tommarrow around 11 or so i would really like to see them and get a little flying in forcast 70 winds 5-10 bummer yeh?? kinda cold and windy

Title: Re: First build in progress
Post by: fidelio on March 25, 2010, 11:17 PM
at 2.50/yd it looks like really nice fabric to make kite sleeves out of.

ko, can i trade weather with you? tomorrow for our friday fly the forcast is 59 degrees and 18 mph.

Post by: Untitled on March 25, 2010, 11:37 PM
Yeah I got 2 yards of each so the rest is going to be turned in to sleeves.  And I'll try to make it tomorrow.

Different material, one on the left is Surflite .6 oz polyester (kind of stretchy), and on the right its 1.5oz Nylon.

So thought prior to starting where sewing was going to be hard, framing would be easy, and bridle would be hard.  After finishing sewing was a lot easier then I thought it was going to be, however doing it perfectly is a lot harder then anticipated.  Framing wasn't hard but it was tedious, and having a drill with a 9/32 bit helped a lot.  The bridle was a lot easier then I expected, just had to tie the knot that was going to be used, mark it, untie it, measure it, then add that to the given measurements, cut, and tie.

They do fly a little differently they 1.5 oz is a little heavier on the lines and a little slower. The Surlite is a little lighter and faster (the coating on it is slicker).  Actually managed to do most of the tricks I can do on them, think I need a little more weight on them though.  Did do some comets finally and almost did a wrapped fade.

Used it to drill out the APA for the leading edges, would of been impossible to slide them otherwise.

Looking good!

Next time you can try boiling the APA's for a few minutes before sliding them on. It makes them much easier.

To slide easier the APAs on a tapered spar I usually warm them  a bit with a hairdryer, it works just fine.

I drop them in hot water that works too.

By the way the kites Look Great!

Title: Re: First build in progress

For the spreaders I did run the fittings under hot water for a while and that made it a lot easier.(couldn't dip it in boiling water since the where already on the spreader).  But for the leading edges I used P2X and 5PT spreaders so had to use APA CA fittings so drilling worked out better I think.  They are still snug but movable.

just got a chance to fly the boy kite I AM IMPRESSED flies great easiest kite to get into and hold a fade iv'e ever flown  tracks well also as to the build and looks OUTSTANDING nice job marco someone please ask it cost to build!!!

Title: Re: First build in progress
Post by: Svolazzo on April 17, 2010, 05:32 PM
Yes, sometimes warming isn't enough and you have also or mainly to drill the APAs to slide them in some tapered spars mostly when you have to put the APAs on the fat end of the spars.

I am building my first kite now as well. I didn't do any build pics as it is a Yankees kite for my wife (long story short, she's a huge fan and it was my IN to buy a sewing machine ;D), but my second build will be one of these as well...

Can I ask the total build cost please?
I've spent around 275 in materials, but I have enough for at least 2 frames+ and I have enough fabric for probably 4 or 5 sails, minimum. Plus another 200 for the machine I got...

I downed about 180 that includes all the fabric, frame, sewing machine, hot cutter, and notions for both kites.

Applique... I was not ready to try that as a panel! lol This was not only my first kite, but my first go around with sewing period...

I should add, this is based on the Wildkite Orange kite with some of my own changes like no snag LE pockets and some changes to the framing.

I wanted to thank Untitled for posting this thread. Seeing the progress you were making was what caused me to finally pull the trigger on giving building a shot. I had been on the fence about trying it for some time. I have also been watching Mark's webcasts at Jest of Eve while he builds his Talons. I am now working on my own Le Quartz as a second build.

It flies! I still need to do some minor tuning on the bridle because I moved the LE connector locations from stock, but even with a slightly out of whack bridle, I am impressed! I didn't have the yo-yo stoppers on it because I had just planned on checking the bridle out and it rolled right up on me when I gave it a little too much slack(never thought I'd say THAT!)! Crashed after since they weren't on and  the lines just slid down the LE, but let me just say it is really pitchy! I'll need a little input adjustment with this one, but so far I really like it!
