Title: Zephyr
Post by: socalman320 on March 30, 2010, 05:31 PM
So I just received my new Zephyr from a store out of state. I opened up the fancy smanshy case and the first thing I notice is that one of the flying lines has been unraveled. So I'm thinkin' hmmmmm..... was the kite flown or something???

I proceed to assemble the kite for further inspection and it seems to be just fine. No stains or issues that I can see. It does bother me that the line would come like that though. I called the shop and was told I should just send the line back and they'd replace it and reimburse me for shipping.

I'm a principles kinda guy though. Even though they say the kite hasn't been flown I tend to wonder. I wouldn't mind it so much if the darn thing was only 100.00 bucks but it wasn't!!!   :'(

Some feedback would be nice. Keep in mind my first thought is really to just not dwell on it and leave it be. Sigh :-\

Pretty obvious ... you're shopping at the wrong store.

I get it already! :P

Still haven't "helped" on the question though.

Sorry, Brother...we tend to go overboard a lot, at least I do. ::)

When you say unraveled, what do you mean? Was the line just thrown in the case? was it a few loose wraps that might have come loose during shipping? Better yet, do you have pictures? That would be a huge help in letting us help you figure out just what you have...

If I could buy lines with a few hours on them, I would - it seems to be the only thing that effectively pre-stretches them!

I would expect, as you pointed out, to pay a bit less for them, however.

It's within the realm of possibility that the kite was unflown, but that the lines had been used.

Didn't we see a thread a few months ago about a guy who had a badly messed up set of lines in his Zephyr case, and he went back to his retailer to resolve it?  It could be something similar, a kite store swapped out a set of lines at a customer's request, but didn't keep track of where they were pulled from, and the kite got sold with a used lineset.

No worries.

Ok, the package comes with two line sets. One 50' and the other 100'. The 100' one looks like well, like when I'm done using a line set and rolling it back up. Where as the other set looks like it was factory wound. You know, all nice and neat and puuuuurdy :P

Maybe I'm just over thinking things? I know it seems kinda petty but DAMN the *&^% thing cost 250.00 bucks for crying out loud :'(!! I want NEW, UNUSED line sets! Is THAT too much to ask for >:(!!!!!!Sigh........ok, I'm done. :D 8)

I suppose I should just take the thing out to my local field, unwind it and see what I have. Then decide if I want to really go through the trouble of mailing it back and then waiting for a new set and blah,blah,blah....or just keep the set I have and enjoy the hell out of my new kite!!! WOOOHOOOOOO :D :D

I suppose I should have just used "Venting" in the subject line. LOL!!!

Just really bugs me is all. Maybe it's the OCD kickin' into overdrive? Buhahahaha!

G-Night.

Just do what you said, take em out to the field and play them out. Go over them carefully and check for anything out of the ordinary. It's possible I guess that maybe they were never flown just unwound and rewound...? But if they show signs of wear, go ahead and send them back. The 100 footers are probably going to see the most use with the Z. I know mine do...

a lot of times we would get linesets that were brand new unflown but the lines started to come unwound from the winder....just happens if the sets were not shrink wrapped (ala laser) or well bungeed....happens....

IMO it is not worth sending them back et al....fly them....beat on them..then get a new set.....

Exactly...Unless they show actual signs of wear or damage, then it might be worth it to send them back. Otherwise just go enjoy that Z!
It does have a definite presence on the lines(aka strong pull), so be aware of that. I love mine...

Nice! Good to know! I'll do just that once it stops raining!!! Ahhhh....sigh.

I wonder if I'll ever use the 50' lines at all? Do you? In lighter winds I suppose? Have you ever heard of changing out the spars on this one to make it lighter? I mean Prism says 1-17 but I doubt that anything less than 5 is the case.

You will be surprised! In low wind, lose the US and set the bridal and it will get down to 1 with some work. I have heard of people tricking it in 3. I can't yet but I hope one day!

??? Ya lost me. Looked at my kite one time and saw where I can adjust the lines as on any other but not sure what ya meant on this.

He means remove the upper spreader and fly the kite without it.

It's an old trick for getting a kite to fly in a bit lower wind.

Interesting. Never tried that before. I'll try that. Thanks!

Adjust the bridal for low wind setting I'm assuming too?

I'm happy to report that after giving one last attempt at contacting the shop and in talking with the manager(MaryAnne) who has worked at this shop for 14yrs(kudos), she is sending me a new line set and said I can keep this one!!!! WOW! Good job MaryAnne!!! I told her that I'm up for a visit to Colorado soon and that I'd gladly deliver the original set in person. I also thanked her profusely for a job well done!!!! Gave her a phone hug and everything :D ;D

"MaryAnn", of that kite shop in Colorado,  is one of my favorite people in the kite business.

She assured me the kite hadn't been flown. After checking it out when I first got it I tend to agree. She sounded pretty sincere. So I'm good.

E3 is a next possibility but certainly will be talkin' with Steve on that!!! Wouldn't want to go to the wrong store again or anything ;)

I live 20 miles from the store he talks of.  Very cool stuff hanging from the ceiling!

I have been there dozens of times but have only seen "dudes" there.  I will have to look for this lady you talk of!

First I talked to one of the "dudes". Don't remember his name(kinda sounded like he just broke up with his girl or something) then I asked for the mgr. and he asked if I wanted the dept.mgr or the store mgr. which is when I asked for the store mgr and got her. Real cool lady!! She may even be the owner. No clue.

Correct me if I'm wrong here.....

Doesn't the Zephyr only come with one set of yo yo stoppers???

I just noticed after re-inspection of this thing that I have a set ON the kite and a set in the bag.

Am I missing something????

My Zephyr came with a set of yo-yo on the kite and one in the bag with the weight.  And the two line set 50#x75' and 90#x100' one came wrapper in plastic and one didn't.

Same here. should also have been a pin on the sewn in pouch the weight was in...not that if it's missing it's a deal breaker but a nice addition for your flying hat...

Got the pin exactly where you said. Wasn't aware it came with two sets of yo yo stoppers though. Not even sure why, since I don't see any second set of holes or anything on the LE.

They are replacements for when/if you cut/damage/wear out the installed set. These little touches are what makes Prism stand out with bang for buck, even up against some more expensive kites, IMO...YMMV

The extra stoppers are replacements, in the event that you should need them.
