I have stated this before and still believe it to be true:

All black kites only look good when they are backlit, and then they look really good.

Backlit (Really good):

Front lit same kite(Not so good):

Front lit (Not so good):

Tim Benson has a backlit shot on his webite of an all-black Deep Space. It looks great.

Monochrome (black/grey/white) kites are the shyte  8). IMHO, they look extremely good in front of clear blue skies and some really sharp flying. Not a good choice of colour for a SUL though if you sometimes fly at night  :-\

are black kites heavier/slower than other colors??

Although.... Red light has a shorter wavelength than blue light and thus causes less optical resistance, allowing it to fly faster.  This is why kites like the Phantom Elite have a "fade" pattern, putting the lighter, more resistive colours in the center and the darker colours on the outside, thus reducing optical drag at the wingtips. (http://groups.google.com/group/rec.kites/msg/1fd53dc44fdf3987?dmode=source)

Black kites look rubbish in all but the right lighting conditions. They are a bugger to tell which way around they are when tricking too. Some little dab of colour makes all the difference. YMMV

Mike.

No Colour kites are usually boring. But one of my prototypes of the Black Pearl is also very dark.
And like it always!

4 kites...all the same kite..different colors....the black with yellow tip is the most used....

I do like an accent of color with black.....

I thought all black was a great look, until I actually flew it. It's really easy to lose the kite in the backround, unfortunately. If you fly anywhere that there's trees, or a hill, the kite almost disappears when it goes past. Then there's also the trouble with loosing the orientation of the kite once in a while, you're doing a trick, and right in the middle, can't tell which way the kite's facing...

That's been my experience with the black kite, I'd never buy one again.

black kites get more heat from the sun and therefore cause more lift :D Not
I have some darker kites but nothing of a solid color. After flying some all black kites i agree that it can be tough to see orientation while tricking.
Ulitmately you have to look at it for, hopefully, for extended periods of time; buy what you like.

I did get a chance to fly an Ocius and liked it but would like to see some more color at the wingtips, but thats just me

Black kites suffer from more UV damage in my experience.

Appart from the things mentioned above, there's always the matter of taste.
If you realy want a Black, or "dark" kite try a few shades of grey.
Get the effect off a blak kite, and add a little visual orientation.

It's a personal thing, but the more I fly black, the more I like it (and I liked it to start with).  It is a very strong, bold "color" - looks great against white, grey, blue skys, not so good against anything dark like evening treelines, etc.

And here in Seattle...  Thats all we get. ;) :-\   But I like Black too. So maybe I'll get a black one for the sky color contrast... :D

In rare situations its REQUIRED ... like on Fearless SSUL Tattoo ... only in BLACK ... required by Lam due to its construction ... its KOOL looking ... my favorite is a slightly dirty yellow color which is the color of my new Transformer TL.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but felt I had to mention something.

I was out a few weeks ago flying my tattoo SUL during sunset.  When it got dark to the point that I could still generally see the kite, something weird happened - my tricking just seemed to greatly improve.

I don't know if it just seemed that way due to poorer visibility, but I like to think that by relying less on what I was seeing and more on what I was feeling on the lines - it just got lots smoother.

So, who knows, perhaps a darker kite can help get you more in tune with the flying "Force".

A splash of color on a black sail will really pop, a flourescent color will pop right off the kite. I like black and have used it as a main color, but never all black. I lose my purple fade widowmaker in the clouds though, so I see the points made on visibility. I lean more toward the Charcoal Gray color myself lately, even better backlit and colors still pop with it.

To me, all these Sea Devil / Fearless photos show is that the black is just negative space. We certainly see the eyes and highlight panels, but the black might as well just be a flat black sheet for as well as it shows up. If the intent is to be "ominous", that is accomplished with the well done eyes, brows and accents, not the black. JMHO

Allen's picture of the PBSK is one of the very few front-lit shots that shows the black as curved surfaces extremely well.

The hardest kite I've shot recently is a mostly black Ocius. When it was front lit, the black just lost almost all of its depth. And even backlit, it still loses depth in many areas.

Frontlit (acceptable at best as far as "dramatic")

Backlit (much better as far as showing the whole kite)

I completely agree, and that was kinda my point with the beast shot; the kite looks very flat and it can make it tough see depth on a black kite, maybe making it confusing to trick

That may be true of someone who buys a certain kite as a status symbol, but really, is the big controversy really over a few dollars ? I see the WM and the FL & SD as being on the same playing field, pricewise, and capability-wise.

... Now back to the original thread thoughts.
I have never been real big on all or mostly black kites either.  But in the past couple of years I have acquired a few mostly black kites and if there is some other colors added to the sail that pop, it can make for a nice looking kite.  So maybe I am warming up to the black thing.
My black Vendetta vent:

But I still think black is to "heavy" for any kind of SUL kite.  ;)

The limitations of digital photos posted on web pages and viewed on home monitors don't allow black kites to show up well; they look much better in person.

Well said and I think it is certainly true.  :)

Video and images really do not capture the power of real-time black.  There is a definite underscored presence with a black kite in good light that is unmatched for esthetics IMO.
