Title: Which trick is the hardest to master ? Comete ???
Post by: cids on October 22, 2010, 03:56 PM
Is there a trick or tricks harder than Comete ?

The comete is like most tricks - once you can do it, its pretty easy.  :)  I know folks who can do it in their sleep in anywhere from 1.5 to 20mph.

It seems like a pretty reliable trick in a variety of winds.  The downside to messing it up is also low - you can just fly off.  Many folks would probably not notice that you even made a mistake.

At least for me, tricks where you can easily tip-wrap and those that require more slack for the kite to fully rotate (like a Taz) are harder since more can go wrong and in-flight recovery can be impossible when it does.

Depends on how you define Master.

Sure, people can do various tricks easily once they learn the moves, but doing them well is a whole different ballgame.

The Comete is a great example of a trick that can be real ugly. I've known people who were real proud of thier Comete and even though it's an advanced trick that requires some practice to even get all the way through, they still just looked like a beginner.

This is definitely another area where flying with experienced people makes a big difference. Comparing your own flying to a video is a lot different than doing the trick side by side with someone.

That's kind of a personal preference thing. I picked up the comete pretty quickly, but still often struggle with the taz and wap do wap. Others are just the opposite.
The most important part of being a good trick flier is not being able to do all the hardest tricks though. It's transitions. Technical flying is cool and all, but what's really jaw dropping to watch is when someone can string tricks together seamlessly, making it all part of a flowing sequence. That doesn't necessarily mean just doing long combos - precision type flying is just as much a trick as the half axel or insane. It's incorporating it all together. Someone who does a yoyo-cynique, flies awkwardley about getting the right setup and then does an amazing comete from the top of the window all the way to the ground to me isn't as impressive as someone who can get a good sequence of simpler tricks.
So I think that's the real hardest 'trick' to master - transitioning.

Hoe's that for not answering the question  :-\

Taz Cascade
Rolling Cascade

Tricks can be very kite and wind dependent so a trick that seems easy on one kite can seem almost impossible on another.

Wind centre to wind edge Side Slide. In comparison the Cométe is just a temporary and mild neurological dysfunction. Flailing, in other words.

Like so many tricks this is very kite dependent.  I couldn't believe how easily this trick comes out of a New Tech Big Bang...go figure!

I met Matt just this last weekend and the topic of being one with the kite and trusting it came up.

The big bang was a lovely slow heavy kite but in the right winds just brilliant, In fact I got my very first Big Bang from you Kevin. I agree some kites do tricks easier than others however with time and with a hell of a lot of practice most modern sport kites will do all the tricks, it's the initial setup that takes the time to learn. Multiplied by the number of kites you own so if you start now I'd say we will all be ' Masters ' in about 10 years. Cheers

What do you mean by 'initial setup' ?  How to do it ?

 :) :) :)

If you do a rock-solid half-Axel, it makes setup and many other tricks much easier.  It gives you control over the kite - it's key to  reasonably decent trick flying.

Not me, never owned one.  I recently flew one for the first time when a new guy asked what boutique kite he should buy to improve his flying.  I flew the Big Bang and said "Take your time choosing another kite - this one is just fine!"

The double reverse coin toss has always been hard for me.

Reversing flat spins are hard.

Side slides are hard to master.

And yet your Vapor 360 side slide on the side of a hill is the standard I judge every side slide against.  ???

Thanks John, but to be accurate that wasn't a 360 side slide. Maybe a 200 or so.  :( A 360 side slide on long lines that is low and slow, takes a lot more stamina than I've got.  I can feel the burn in my legs as I think about walking backwards up that hill.

Funny thing about side slides and 360's is that you don't actually do anything other than walk backwards. If there's little to no wind, you should be able to virtually lock in in and go as far as you want. I'm not sure why that's so hard. When the kite is up wind I feel like I'm going to panic. "Pleeeeease baby, don't die on me........"
