Title: Las Vegas Fun fly 11/26?
Post by: tcope on November 19, 2010, 03:15 PM
I had PM'ed some people a few weeks ago about wanting to get down to LV for a fun fly. My plans changed but now they seemed to have opened back up (a good thing).... with a crunch on the time frame. I'm wonder if anyone would want to get together Friday 11/26, the day after Thanksgiving for a fun fly.

It seems like the Friday evenings might be getting a little chilly but it appears that people are still flying Friday in the evening? Since many people will have Friday off I'm wondering if anyone might want to start flying around 1pm.

I'm hoping we have some takers as I'd really like to get down there before winter sets in.

Can anyone tell me if there might be room to put up some larger SLK, yea, nay or does it depend on people using the field?

Please post asap as I would need to make hotel reservations.

I'll be down there...

Others more local have told me they will too.

Field appears to me certainly large enough to fly large SLK's
I haven't seen anybody fly them though in the 5-6 times i've been there.

I've heard the wind lately hasn't been real condusive for large kites though, but you never know.

I always have a good time regardless of the wind conditions.

weather: It's kinda funny to watch some of those guys huddling around little propane heaters while i run around in my t-shirt.  :D I guess it depends what weather you're used to.

I'm expecting 5-12" of snow here this weekend, so i'm looking forward to some warm LV weather.

Hope to see you there.  PM if you need more info to find it.

PM sent.

Anyone getting out there early.... in the afternoon on Friday? It's a 6 hour drive (I'd need to leave around 6am) so I'd like to get in as much flying as possible. Plus, it would be warmer in the afternoon!

(I figure a few people would have Thursday and Friday off)

Kent said he would be there. Darren also.

I may be there. But if not, would be available to fly on the weekend.

the group which huddles around the heaters won't be there. they're going off to the desert to ride atv's. i could definitely be talked into going earlier while the sun is still up. dano is right though, the wind has been really flaky. 0-15mph, but either 0 or either 15, no in between. :p

if you have the breeze, there's room to fly big kites. if they're up, we just fly sport kites underneath. day after thanksgiving i'd imagine the soccer players won't show up so there'd be more room than you'd have kites, especially during the day.

maybe kent will chime in here, but if it's just kent and i from the local set, i'd rather at least start during the day, as it's dark here at 5pm now.

the chance for wind though on one day specific day of the week this time of year though i'd say is about 1 in 7.

I'm hoping with the flaky temps this time of year that the winds will be pretty good for at least part of the day.

I'm glad to hear that so many people are interested! I have an email out to another person here to see if he wants to join me. Right now I plan on leaving SLC around 6am and getting down there around 1pm.

I'll load the truck up with some stuff to accommodate what ever is going on.

I'm really looking forward to this! Hope my friend can go as it will make the drive much easier.

Good deal... now I'm _really_ excited about this fly! My friend declined to go as he just got back from LV but I'm still trying to talk him into the trip. Free transportation and lodging and I still can't get someone to go (which is typical).

I know it's going to be on the chilly side but 1) it's got to beat the 2" of snow I've gotten so far tonight and the snow that will be falling over the next 3 days and 2) that is why they make long underwear.

I made my hotel reservations... staying at the Ramada off Flamingo Rd.

I'm hoping to leave here around 6am. We currently have a Weather Advisory for a blizzard (hitting right now) with temps dropping into the 10's as highs. Something about packing up kites for a fun fly when it's snowing and freezing outside. Still, I'll take 50 degrees above what is outside my house right now.

Hoping to see some people out there in the afternoon. I'm packing some heavy cloths for the evening. Winds look to be good but dropping off starting around 6 or 7pm (between 4pm and 10pm the wind shifts 180 degrees). So I think the best winds will be before then (around 5mph).

I'm looking forward to seeing/meeting everyone in LV. I've been wanting to get down there and fly. Bundle up and come on out!

Whooooowww... someone is holding out! Rule is, if you did not bring enough for everyone.... then I'm first in line!

Which reminds me... I'll need to pack up a backpacking stove to make some hot chocolate. See, this is sounding better and better!

I just checked the weather again and I don't know that I've ever seen so many zeros for wind speed.  :o

They just don't know I'm rolling into town. Once they find out, I'm sure the wind forecast will be increased.

I picked up a portable propane heater (tank top type) and I'll have that out.

I'll also be out flying on Saturday which looks to be a great day... 60 degrees with 5mph winds! I should be out around 11am and flying until around 3pm.

I still need to see if I can finish up a bol I've been working on, get the truck packed, attend thanksgiving dinner and clean up before leaving. Isn't it always crunch time in the last few hours. The snow trucks knocking over my mailbox turning last nights storm did not help. Spent the entire day putting it back up (cement and a 6x6 are now holding it up). What fun in 20 degree weather.

Friday night was great fun. So very nice to meet everyone. Wind was light to nothing but we managed to fly for awhile. I took some photos and will post them when I get home. Waiting in line for hotel breakfest and then out for round 2 of flying.

Great fun!

 :)

I'm sitting at the in-laws reading about UNR's big win last night.

After getting home last night i had to sit in the jeep for 1/2 hour listening to last of the game.
4minutes left- 24-24 tie
Boise pulls a td w\ about 1.5 minutes left - 24-27  :(
13 seconds left, UNR td = 31-31
2 seconds left Boise missed a 26 yd fieldgoal
Overtime- Boise misses ANOTHER short FG.
The rest is history. Huh, Darren?  :D :D :D

BOOM (cannon fire)

t'was great to hang out with everyone. i had a fun time, though i didn't have to drive all day for the privilege. good thing you brought the heater tcope or i might be singing a different tune. hadn't expected it to be the coldest friday since last winter but i suppose it's the right time of year to adjust expectations.

each attendant added greatly to the character of the evening. the only disappointment is those from greater distances aren't our weekly companions.

we missed you chilese, it's just not the same when you're not there.

Winds seem to be about 20+ here where i'm at.
Would it be a bit calmer up at patriot?

I might be up for a short fly this morning before going home Godfather.

On another note..
If my LV friends have not seen Jan Rouven perform down at Freeemont, go see him before Nov. 30th. He performs twice daily @ 8pm and 10pm.
Caught him last night and it was AMAZING!

The Wardog double IPA I had beforehand at Big Dog Brewery was pretty amazing too!  ;D Thanks for the tip Mark!

Man... where does the time go! I meant to make a post and add some pictures but I just got sooooo very busy. So I'm sorry for not commenting earlier.

The trip down was a little long but not too bad. I thought about stopping in this town and looking around:

I've been to St George UT several time but never any further. Soon afterwards I got to the "interesting" part:

Very spectacular views. I soaked it all in because I was getting closer to my destination:

At this point... just flat land in the middle of no where:

But on to the flying! I finally found the park where the LV people why. At least to me, it was in an odd place. Nestled off the highway around some apartments was a very large park just perfect for kite flying. I did not see anyone so I thought I'd break out a dual liner to attract some attention. I guess picking the only spot under some high power electric lines will attract some attention as the group found me right away and we all got together.

The winds were light but we managed to find a few times when there was enough get some kites into the air:

Much of the time we spend hanging around and talking. I'll tell you... for me, this can be as much fun as flying and the LV group was no different. It's really good to just hang out and chat with other people who like flying. It was so much fun it went in into the evening:

Man... I was _really_ glad I got to get down and fly with the LV group. Really a bunch of GREAT people! I loved every minute of it!

After flying I got to my hotel. I wanted to try some place a little different for grub but was going to take it back to my room. My GPS found Nathans and I thought that would be good. I should have listened to the GPS when it told me "you are entering a restricted area" but at first I had no idea what this meant. A short while later I was on the strip. Darn! I quickly knew Nathans was not going to happen 45 minutes later and 3 blocks I finally managed to get out of there. Picked up some food and got a good night sleep.

The following day I was on my own. But the wind was better in the morning and I managed to get some kites up into the air:

The wind died down and I headed home. The drive home proved interesting. I don't recall the name of the area but there was a forest fire burning in a mountain range. Here is one picture:

Now here is a picture of 120 miles north of the fire:

From what I remember reading, this fire had been burning for about 2 months at that point. It was in the middle of no where and there was just no reason to spend the money to put it out. Nature starts fires all of the time. It's natural. When they don't threaten anything it's simply not worth putting them out... just containing them is enough.

I also saw a few other sights... one of which was a Batmobile type vehicle:

Yeah... don't ask me what that was all about. :)

As I said, I had a great time and I'm looking forward to the next time I can visit!

Oh... and here is what I came home to...

It was an awesome time for sure!  Thanks for the pictures and for coming down.  You will have to do that more often, hopefully we can find a bit more wind and a little warmer. :)

Can't wait till next time.
