Title: 2011 "A" Bag
Post by: tpatter on February 25, 2011, 01:53 PM
So what are folks carrying so far this year?  Not what you think are your A-bag kites, but what you are actually taking with you to the field.

The 3 that I am always carrying with me now are:
- Fearless Vented Light
- Transformer TL
- 4D

Now that Tom has started this, I assume he is going to do a statistical break down so we can see which is the most popular kite on the block.

Hope you are surviving the CO winter John!  It's crazy here - below freezing in Seattle at this time of year just shouldn't happen (but I will be heading out in it soon)!

Not a bad idea on the breakdown - my real reason is so that I can PM folks about some kites that I am obsessed with (aside from Lams that is - which appear to be quite popular here)!  :)

Just messed with it a little and it is 83 different kite models between 27 fliers or addicts.  Total of about 227 kites. Fearless is the top model.  Transformer and Mamba are a distant second.  Lot of people like to carry a SLK too.

No wonder the kite business is a charity business.  No big favorites.  Isn't this nice for us addicts.

Waiting for the snow to melt so I don't do stupid things like count kites.  Need to fly

I think I just realized that I am in the wrong line of business or golf is actually cheaper than kiting.   Some of your bags are more than I could ever afford to spend with multiple Fearless and other high-end boutique kites.

In my car, I haven't bought a bag yet:
Zephyr
4D
Silver Fox STD and UL
Mantis V2

My wish list includes:
Gemini
Saber II
Ocius
various mixes of STD, UL, and SUL.

So far to my count there are 94 different type of sport kites in the "A" list. Top brands seem to be Lam (Sky Sport), Prism, Rev, and BMK.   About 1/3 of the sporters carry a SLK in their "A" bag.

I was also able to glean other intertesting facts.  Average age is 14 mentally and 48 physically.  Blue eyes predominate.

Most kiters drink cheap beer also.  Can tell that by amount of money respresented in the kites.

Also if anyone wants a copy of the spreadsheet send me a message with email and I will forward it.  I think my counting is about 95% correct.

I don't know, I have friends that spend $1000s on golf equipment, $10,000s on golf club memberships & trips... seems like a challenge to spend more on kites. Really, you could buy a piece of beach for what some people spend on golf...  ;D

That's true.  But I am a golf course superintendent and play all that I want for pretty much nothing.  Plus when you spend all your work time on a golf course, the last place you want to be for fun is on the golf course.  As I said, I may be in the wrong line of work... LOL.  It is nice that I live only 3 miles from the beach to get some kite time.

Seriously considering getting an MBA and changing careers though.

Hmm thinking of my uncles golf stuff.  3 custom left handed drivers 1-3 wood at $1500 each, custom putter $700, set of titanium Irons $1800, custom PW and SW $300 each, shoes $200, IDiotic looking wardrobe about $1000, golf club membership $250 per month(paid for 4 years so $12000), hand made club bag $500 and and  UNknown amount in balls, tees and green fees for courses other than his club.  Figure at least $21,000 in 4 years.   Thats A LOT of kites ???

In my case, annually I'm spending 10x the amount the amount on purchasing kites to travel to kite-related events.  Something that has not gone over well at home, I'm afraid :(

Another stupid stat.  Average bag has 7.8 kites per bag.  Worse one was 23 kites.  Now that is a big bag.  Average bag worth is about $1400 based on $175 per kite.  That might be low. Now remember the people who participated are the worse of the bad.

Wow, it's been years since I logged in to the forum, but I had to stop in to give my appreciation to John for his keeping my kite in his "A" bag.  (Although I noticed recently that my Icarus has since been rotated out of the "A" bag... oh well.)

I still fly, but not nearly as much as I used to.  Of course, I have all different versions of the Icarus -- Super SUL, SUL, UL, heavier UL, STD, Half-vent, and Full Vent -- and I actually don't fly anything else anymore.  But I have my eye on Barressi's Kymera.  Looks like a sweet ride.

Thanks again John for your support.  I'm actually not entirely sure where the other dozen or so ended up, but I'd love to find out if people are still enjoying them.   I guess I should be thankful that they're not all sitting in the Swap Meet section!  :)

Dude. Where have you been?

Ahhh, well, life got in the way of kite flying, I guess.  Been busy at work, at home, with the kids, completed a renovation of the house, etc.

But I still make it a priority to get out and fly on my birthday and on Father's Day.  Anything else is just gravy.

I've also started playing tennis again, so that occupies most of my free time.   Getting back in shape after 15 years off the court was rough on my aging body.  But the hard work over the last 5 years was worth it -- I'm playing better than I did when I was 18.

Anyways, kiting is interesting once you "master" the basic movements -- my muscle memory hasn't really deteriorated at all over the last few years, even though I haven't been flying much at all.  I can still do all the tricks I used to do, without any noticeable decline.

I'll probably be around for a little while, but you never know, I might just disappear again without warning.  :)

Reeealy short linesets

Currently, I am going through one of my long line flying phases, which is only worth doing in decent wind, hence the separate bag for Liberty State Park.

When going to Liberty, I'll often be out there all day. It pays to bring a few creature comforts, but it makes for a pretty heavy bag.

Repair items get short shrift in an attempt to (unsuccessfully) control the weight. Ari's Little Red Wagon or something similar may be on the horizon, in which case the weight will go through the roof.

This lot was crammed into an HQ Travel Bag until Today but; after breaking an alternate LS set  for the V Masque due to the crush, a change to a larger, external pocket, bag seemed prudent.

My local winds are so crap that longer lines are counter productive: the smaller the wind window the better. I rarely fly on anything longer than 60ft and often use 30ft. This bag is all about getting out for a quick fly: a light fast set up to maximize flying time with no dithering over what kite to fly and no extraneous bric brac to confuse the issue.

I have a short, four pocket, MLD that is currently evolving/morphing into a possible SLK/Quad/Dualie solution but the less said about that the better.

Currently the "A" bag is a soft rolling double ski bag and can take all the two liners that I own. Nearly 40 of them including the Force 10.
Never leave one that you might want to fly, at home!!
