Title: Revolution Team Demo Kite Concept
Post by: chilese on April 15, 2009, 12:35 AM
After having spent some time poking holes in a Rev, I got to thinking about reinforcing the trailing edges with some mylar and then covering the mylar with an accent panel.

Also, I've had many people ask me what type of kite the iQuad team was flying. You can't always see the word Revolution when you're a couple of hundred feet away from the kite.

So here is my idea for the Rev Team Demo Kites. The white could be replaced with any light color: yellow, cyan, pink, rubin to give each team member their own color. I sent a rougher design to Ben months ago, but never heard back from him or the company. So now, I present the design here. It's crude, but should give you an idea of how the kites would look. For vented conditions, just use the small hole technique I tried on the contest Rev.

Comments welcome.  :)

I'd let REV put the venting in it. ;D

I actually like the redesign. Perhaps the "Revolution" is a bit over powering but I like the idea of it being much larger. I've always disliked Mylar on a kite but as I see the trailing edges on John's redesign I like the way it gives a 3D effect.

I don't think it's ugly at all. The white background does not do it justice but it's just a mock up.

Trust me... I've seen worse designs from Revolution (few and far between though). I think Rev needs to shake up the design a little without pricing the design out of the hands of most fliers.

It's the same idea as people wearing T-shirts with that FOX logo on it.

That company started out making racing equipment and now they make almost all their money from their clothing.

And you could certainly name other companies with similar situations.  :o

Remember, this would be for their team demo kites. Not for the general public. Of course, then the demand will build.......

I like the look too.  Good idea John.  The 3d effect with the shading is great!

Not sure what those little cartoon characters in the lower right corner are there for however??? ;) ;) ;)

The characters are Kokapelli's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kokopelli), part of iQuads logo. Patrick you were in Washington for years, surely you recognize Kokapelli (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kokopelli), they're rampant up there even though they are a southwestern indian symbol originally.

Not keen on the mylar bits John. And wouldn't it be better to make the logos smaller not larger?

That was the whole reason for John's "redesign" of the IQuad kites:

Also, I've had many people ask me what type of kite the iQuad team was flying. You can't always see the word Revolution when you're a couple of hundred feet away from the kite.

The logos are large because these would be the team demo kites. These are not the kites for the regular Rev flyers. This is for Revolution to get their name seen when they have a team of flyers demonstrating their kites.

What don't you like about the covered mylar reinforcement? Just wondering.

Didn't realise it was just the reinforcing patches that were Mylar. My mistake, and Mylar is what I tend to use for that too. A very good material to hold a point loading and spread it to a wider area of cloth.

My point, incorrect though it was in relation to your post, was that I don't like mixing Mylar and ripstop panels. Their stretch pattern is too different IMHO. Actually not my opinion - There was a short period when Mylar was introduced into boat sails with Dacrons. The sales were great for a few hours use, then the seams started ripping and the Dacron was stretching in very uneven ways - all due to the unequal stretch of the two materials. Ended up with most of them being scrapped and replaced under warranty.  I would not suggest that using Mylar with ripstop on a kite would lead to its 'instant' failure (Clearly that is not the case because there are examples) but I do not believe it would lead to the best, regular hydrofoil shape or would give as long life as matched materials.

No empirical proof of all this in kite making I have to add, so it may be so much tosh.
