The weekend of March 10-11, 2012. The only forseeable change could be adding a day!

I have to say that the webcam was great. I found that I liked it best on the big screen ;D ;D
Made me really want to "not" miss another KP.

Did I hear something about it being offically 3 days?
 next year

The weekend of March 10-11, 2012. The only forseeable change could be adding a day!

Would that change Friday from a casual day to a restricted field day? I'm kinda down on that idea. Best flying is often on Friday.

Not like I'm gonna boycott or anything...

Team flying on 75s in a parking lot that mightve been 60 feet at best was AWESOME!!!!!!! Sure did make for some interesting take offs and landings!!!!!!

Admittedly, the demo sessions are for the crowds, not the fliers. The fliers are there to hang with other fliers and fly, not watch routines we've seen many times.

The demos are a necessary evil, hopefully kept to a minimum.

Might be able to make this one, as long as my son doesn't take leave during those dates, Missed this years kite party, my son was home on leave from his second tour in Iraq, wanted to spend some time with him before he was heading back to Iraq.

The time for demos seemed to be a little shorter this year.  The first demo session of the day seemed to be just at the right time to break for lunch.  Really worked well for us.  Otherwise some of us will fly and fly and fly, and find we have blown right by lunch and have not taken a break.  Perhaps Lynn and I are the only ones who have this happen, perhaps not, but it did work out well for us.

Sit, relax, watch some great flying, have lunch, drink some water, apply another layer of sunscreen, perhaps a short snooze (just kidding).

John, correct, and I thought there were less this year. Allen, forget about it, won't be an extra day, and I was thinking about Monday anyway, keeping Friday as is. But never mind, format stays the same. Here is the deal, if the city does what they say they want to do, the public can't be excluded. For city sponsorship money, they're gonna require "festival" type atmosphere, and they want it BIG. To keep the Kite Party as is it is, which is the biggest challenge every year, there is only one option as far as I'm concerned, a second event in the Fall. The hardest part for me is figuring out how to manage the growth since it appears that each year, more and more people want to be "registered" fliers. Well, numbers get bigger, the beach doesn't. If they ever let me pull volleyball poles from both sides of pier, it would be much easier to manage growth. So once again, this event is for you folks, so you tell me what you'd like to see happen. Limit numbers? Establish seniority based on number of years attended? I'm all ears.

First let me extend my "THANK YOU" for a tremendous party ... Dave, it was great.

As Jim explained, the timing and the demo length felt more balanced this year ... thank you!  The demos need to take place to wow the crowd and get them thinking about joining the kiting fraternity, and thereby, help support The Kite Connection.  Plus, they force us off the field to eat lunch and give us a chance to talk to others.  Rev flying in a line is very conducive to conversation and camaraderie.  For safety, the big kite fliers have to be anchored to their kites and can't wander far afield to talk to others.  Thus, the demos offered a good chance for sport kite fliers to wander around and talk to them.

The evening meals are another great chance to spend quality time with old and new friends.  Don't curtail them.

It would be interesting to know how many fliers actually showed up each year.  I noticed that the box of official passes had a lot of unclaimed tags in it.  Is it really growing so much that restrictions are necessary?  Some of the old timers didn't show up and they were missed.   But, quite a few first timers were there and it was fun to see how much they enjoyed themselves ... the three that I talked to were making plans to attend next year.  Please try to find a way not to restrict attendance.

From an extremely selfish stand point, I would like to see the format stay the same.  The IKE guys taught me to come early in the week and stay over into the next week.  That's half the fun ... unrestricted time to fly, talk and trade lies.  I'd give up one of those days to support a fes ... fes ... festival, but then I'm retired and don't have to work to support my family.  Others might find it hard to add an extra day or so.  An official festival in the fall that includes support from the city for Kite Party, might be an idea worth pursuing.

That's my two cents ...

And again Dave, thank you for another memorable party.

Cheers,
Tom

Demos were just right this year. Everyone involved knows the ropes. Subbing another dual line routine for a quad would be good. Even an impromptu mega fly would be cool. A bunch of duallies zooming around is a nice contrast to the precise quads.

Even though we seemed to have a lot of people registered, the field wasn't any more crowded than average.

Judging by the number of "campsites" around the field and attendance Saturday night, I don't think we grew much.

Only field issue this year was a lot of revs staked out and left for long periods of time. Next year we might want to start with an expressed atitude of "make space for someone else when you leave the field" It's easy to lose sight of this, especially for quad fliers who can more easily operate in confined spaces.

I noticed that the box of official passes had a lot of unclaimed tags in it.

First, THANK YOU DAVE!!!!! again

The box you refer to includes tags I make for (hopeful/some times attends/never register guests) There were a few registered but not attend fliers, but there were also non registered (past attendees) that showed up, so I think we were close to the 80+

I agree with Allen that the field seemed average, and sometimes less crowed than normal

I truly believe kite party is an attitude, you either have it or you don't, if you don't have the attitude you don't get what kite party is all about.

I welcome new attendees, I hope they have the attitude, if not it was still nice meeting you, maybe your better suited for a "festival"

Dave if you in fact join forces with the city and start a second event, I will be glad to assist in anyway I can, (it will be all expenses paid ..right)

I also agree that the demos were just right this year, enough to get the crowd focused, and then plenty of free flying time.

Change always happens, but as long as the attitude is upheld kite party will be the same, first time attendees included

My 4 cents worth

MikeM

Thanks for the info on the tags Mike.

Mike caught a very good point ... attitude!  Kite fliers who attend Kite Party are generally folks you like to associate with at other events 'cuz they're there to enjoy what ever is available and make the best of the day.

Dave, as to supporting Mike with a free ride ... sure would be cheap.  I only saw him eat ice cubes and he was sleeping in his pick-up so he could get the first parking place in the lot.  So, about about $1.25 should do it!

Cheers,
Tom

DAVE.....YOU ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME PARTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The beach never felt crowded and as others have said, the balance of demos felt right.
Jim is so right about blowing thru lunch. It's always been a hard decision......lunch or continue to fly????? Fly of course is the answer, right up until sunset!!!!!!

Next years party will likely be more well attended if only because that HD webcam gave others not there this year the ability to drool at those of us lucky enuf to be there. I even got a text from a pal in the UK asking me to go fly in front of the camera so he could live vicariously for a few minutes!!!!! Too Cool!!!!!!!!!
The thought of 2 parties next year boggles the senses.....WOW!!!! :P :P

We would like to see the March Kite Party continue just as it is.  We started with Kite Party 2 and have enjoyed it every year since.  If the city would like to be more involved in a "Festival" sometime in the Fall, fine.  That would be a different animal.  It certainly would not be Kite Party.

Dave, Kite Party is your gathering.  You conceived it, brought it into the world and have been a great host for all these years, without any massive  changes.

a parking area for revs would be a LARGE bonus for keeping the field a little less hectic.(maybe under the pier)adding Monday and leaving friday for the die hards would be great. otherwise i cannot think of anything that could possibly make it better.except maybe making my 30 min. drive a little shorter LOL Mike THANK YOU for all that you do and I am really looking forward to a great gathering. ps if you do get a kite festival together with the city I will GLADLY attend that also pss the field really did not feel more crowded to me. it just seemed there were less places to fly,if that makes any sense thanx again Kurt

OK, I apologize in advance for the following post...however,

After talking this over with Steve, we both agreed it would be better do this now, so...WE ARE MOVING ALL KITE PARTY DISCUSSION OVER TO THE KITE CONNECTION FORUM. Yes, this is probably a bit of a shocker to a lot of you, but I have spent the past few hours reactivating, pruning, and updating my forum. Please go there and register if you would like to continue this discussion, or any other Kite Party discussions. I needed to delete all the profiles, so you will need to register again. To make picking up this discussion easy, I have cut and pasted all posts in order. I'm sorry if this is an inconvenience to anyone. If you were an original member there, you may need to change your username by a letter or something. This feels really funny, as this has been the home for Kite Party since day one, but this will eliminate a lot of confusion for a lot of people, and really needed to be done.

For the record, Steve and I have been friends for a long time. He is one of the few in the industry that I consider a real friend. While I suppose "technically" we are competitors, we have never felt that to be the case. We work together more than anything else. We are very close. For those of you that this causes any inconvenience for, all I can say is that I am sorry. But it's something that needed to be done. Thank you for your support.

Here is the link to the forum....I hope:

Dave - we love ya man!

As you know, we have been at every KP so far and don't intend that to change going forward.  We love the format you conceived and the attitude that everyone has when there.  As everyone as identifed, demos are a necessary evil when you have an event such as this, in an area surrounded by public, as it helps boost interest in our sport and the kiting business.  However, I too felt you had the balance pretty much perfect last time.

I agree with the others, that the format we have now is great and should you end up with an additional event some other time in the year, we would be honored to be able to help out and support it in any way we can.

Can't wait for March now!!

Thank you. I'm really trying to keep the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality. Other than a couple subtle tweaks perhaps (sorry, a "parking area" under the pier for Revs is just not possible due to mandatory access for emergency vehicles), should be like last year. I will say there will be some really good (and rare) auction items.

Hey Gang,
Just a quick note to ask you to PLEASE do me a really, really, really, really, big favor. PLEASE REGISTER ON THE ALL NEW KITE PARTY WEB SITE, which is now live and rolling (thank you Junior). Even if you've sent me an email, or registered on the new site, I need you to do it again since there was a slight glitch and I didn't receive any notifications. If you have sent me an email, please mention that in comments. Then look for your name to appear on the "confirmed attendees" list (which I update manually, so if it takes a few days, you know why. Thank you very very much!
Dave

Phew, not sure where my head was at before...

Did some serious updates (hopefully you'll feel they're improvements) to the Kite Party web site.

http://www.kiteparty.com (http://www.kiteparty.com)

The registration form should be functional (within Dave's response time), and you'll now find a separate post on the site for the Kite Party 10 list of RSVPs and visitor discussion (no registration required).

Now that I've got a suitable layout, just need to tweak it for flow and organization.

Feedback and suggestions are welcome, thanks for putting up with my last (ahem) attempt. :)

Agreed, looks much better.  Much cleaner, without weird scrolly screen issues with the pictures (which I'm guessing only happen on smaller monitors).  I miss the pictures . . . but I'm hoping they will come back in the blog.  One note - I had to hunt a bit to find the list of registered attendees.  You might want to make that a bit more obvious in the navigation since that's were many people will look to see if Dave has updated the attendees.  I think the only place it exists right now is on the Registration page as a "click here" link.  I'm sure you just loooove ::) design comments from people who have nothing to do with the actual site . . . . ::)

However, overall, very nice.  And I'm very much looking forward to it!

I admit I was actually thinking the same thing. It's a small link under Kite Party 10 (info). I also think a bigger link if possible. I also know NOTHING about web design. But I agree it looks much better than the first (ahem) attempt. I was quoting John on that. I like how there are already over 60 officially registered and approved (Gulp).
