Title: Sunday in Ripon?
Post by: ozonejim on March 31, 2011, 10:13 AM
George, Tony, Ca Ike you up for some flying? Looks like there will be wind.

Sounds good Jimbo.
They have the fields set up for soccer, but there should still be plenty of space.
Noonish?
Geo.

This sunday?  Sure I'll be there.  WE'll probably have to use the expansion area like I usually do because of the soccer leagues but there's still plenty of room.

Where in Ripon do you guys fly?
Mistlin sports park on River Rd off 99 and JackTone is where we're going to meet.  Thats where I've been flying most weekends lately unless the soccer fields at the stockton airport are open and I just don't feel like driving much. Come on down and join us if you like.

Noonish works for me too see you guys there.

Can't make it now as we are still in Southern California.  However, we plan to be in Walnut Grove for six or seven weeks starting June 1st, so if you guys get together there during that time, would love to join you.

Ike, it's kinda my thing. I like sharing good cheese. I'll bring some from a local maker. Geo.

I'm real good at cutting the cheese, no knife needed  :D. Noticed I used the cheesy emotion!

Thats cool Geo.  I'm into wines myself and for some reason good cheese and good wine make a nice pair.

That is a skill I will ask you not to prove Tony ;D  So my quote for this event will be "May the wind at our backs not be caused by the beans (or cheese) we had for dinner" :)

The grounds keeper for the park lives next door. He said they pulled all the goals and the fields are wide open.

Cool no league tomorrow then.  Which field should we use then?  I've gotten to prefer the north field by the stadiums or the expansion area since ground wind is a bit more consistent not having the downgrade.

Cool and with the usual inland wind disruption that should put it in the 8-10 mph range for feel :)

Thanks to all that came out.  It was fun, good to have so many to fly with and meet some new faces.  I also found a pocket knife on the field so if anyone I didn't ask already, lost one let me know

It was a fun day :)

Is that knife a silver Buck? If so I lost it last September :o

A Great Day.
The winds were a bit stiff. They made the tricking more difficult and breaking stuff easier.
There was some talk of making it a monthly gettoghether. Possibly the second Sunday of the month so as not to conflict with Chico's monthly fly.
Geo.

Yes, it was great to meet you all.  Was a nice turnout.

Just curious, did anyone happen to get a photo/movie of the Laser 9-stack?  I know it was only up for like 5 minutes but I thought I'd ask anyway, heh.  Man that thing gets tangled so easily!

Mike, I did not, but Jim and Tony had cameras out, they may have.
BTW, nice Thor flying in those big winds.

Thanks!  The Hammer was definitely a handful in those winds but it was still fun nonetheless.  I'm pretty sure my arms are 1" longer today.  ???

Let me know how that vid looks.  I'd be interested in checking it out no matter how it turned out.

I saw a bit of you flying it. You handled it quite well!  :)
The stack looked nice too, sorry, I got no pictures of it..

Great time! Just a bit too far for regular day trips though.  :(
But it was good to see you guys, and Paco "the dog" enjoyed it too.   ;)

I forgot to charge my cam and with a pretty much dead bat is doesn't focus well at all, so I didn't get much that was usable.  Here's a clip with the few stills i pulled and short in-focus clip I could save of Mikes Laser stack.  Not much else saveable so far but I'm still sifting through what I did get.

Nice!  Thanks.  Looks like the part when the back kites were being unruly, heh.  Need to figure out a way to fix that.

Ask kiteking (http://www.gwtwforum.com/index.php?action=profile;u=141) - Mike M - to watch the vid and give an opinion.

I think on our 5 stack the upper link lines may have stretched when it became unruly. We tied a knot in each, thus progressively moving the effective bridle point up so that the upper kites would lead rather then follow. It seemed to help but I'm no expert on stacks.

oh boy is it good to see that stack in the air!!!!!!
Welcome to the Lazer sport kites!!!!!

Mike: i have never seen a stack do that before!!!!Dynakites you can get to splay out like a handful of cards..but delta sport kites????wow.....

btw: you guys have a sweet place to fly!

Title: Re: Sunday in Ripon?
Post by: Ca Ike on April 05, 2011, 11:20 PM
I've seen lots of stacks do that.  Usually when you do turns too fast but on the old school delta stacks it happens a lot when the link lines get off and they wobble a lot.  The wobble can be enough that it makes the sail collapse since they have no stand offs and you loose lift on the trailing kites.

Post by: kiteking on April 06, 2011, 09:08 AM
Hard to tell from the video,

Check to be sure all link lines are same length

Tie a overhand knot in the lower outside link lines (shorting about 1") on the last kite

this should raise it up some and help stabilize the stack

here's (http://www.gwtwforum.com/index.php?topic=78.msg2595#msg2595) a Peter Powel 11 Stack

I don't think I've seen so many fliers in Ripon. Is there some interest in another Sunday fly? I plan to be there around noon. There's a lot of OPKs (other people's kites) to try.
Geo.

Plenty of room Allen.  Heck the undeveloped expansion lot is 5 acres alone, along with the 10+ soccer fields.  Hey George any word on soccer games there this weekend?

Other than those confirmed here I have 3 more maybe's to add to the mix.    Forecast looks good with 9-11 winds expected, but I'd still plan on light, shifty winds early as last sunday winds didn't really pick up steady until about 3pm.

ok ok your right so were a bit off the suggested day (and my brain is fried from doing taxes  ??? ).  Oh well its still a bit impromptu atm I guess but its a start.  So next month we get on track?!?  The 2nd sunday of the month was suggested so it doesn't coincide with Chico's fly  and they can come down if they want as well.
