Title: Ripon monthly fly
Post by: Ca Ike on June 02, 2011, 02:21 AM
WElp next fun fly is coming up june 12.  HOpefully the weather will cooperate.  Been a good turn out so far. Any suggestions to add to this?  I've spread the word about it to quite a few people that have seen me out flying so we may have a few potential addictees joining us to try out stuff and watch.

Last weekend at the San Ramon Art & Wind Festival I talked to several people about Ripon. Two for sure will be coming to play and several others  showed interest.

For the new people we fly at Mistlin Sports Park. From highway 99 take  Jack Tone Rd go North to River Rd, you will see the park.

We are planning to be at the fly on July 10th.

We'll probably pack both lunch and dinner and stay late.  Last month temp and wind were just getting nice when we all packed up and left.

Besides, if we get back to Walnut Grove too early, I'll end up doing some more painting on the house. :-[

I'm planning to be ther by 9am but we all know how plans tend to go. Especially when I'll probably have my niece in tow.  Winds have been around 0-4 early till about 1pm the last few flys so if you want the sul winds get there early.  Probably kick up to 10+ late afternoon.  PRedicted to be 4-6 in the AM 10-15 in the PM.

YEs the fly will be on the 9th unless we have a drastic weather change and have torrential rains :P  HOpefully the soccer nuts won't be taking up the entire park like they did last weekend but we'll find a spot somewhere in there.

Rhonda and I are considering running down since we'll be missing Chico's first Sunday fly this month  :(  but then we will be in Tahoe for a friends wedding and spending some time with the daughter, son in law and granddaughter. Depends on how much further behind I get. Wonder if any of the other locals would be up for a road trip?  Steve, Bob, Ted, Denny? 3 hours each way, I'll drive (i'm not a good passenger)

Hey Mike, I have been trying to make both fly's (Chico & Ripon) and probably will be in Ripon next weekend, and Chico this weekend, as long as work doesn't interfere, hey I don't see my name in your list ;) O I'm not really Local, just Loco ;D, winds have been pretty nice, the times I have made it to Ripon, If you and Rhonda are going to be there I might be able to get Terry to go this time, real good group of flyer's lots of kites.

I've been wanting to go since they started it, it's just a pretty long drive for us but since we are missing the Chico fly we're going to try for Ripon. Grass Valley is a bit out of fhe way but if you're buying we'll meet you in Marysville for breakfast  ;)

Well looks like we might have a good size group shaping up.  THe good news is there are no soccer games set for the 9th but the goals will probably be left out as usual.  For those that haven't been to one of our fly's yet we usually fly all day.  SOme of us get out there as early as 8-9 am but most show up around noon and stay till 5 or later.  THere isn't much for shade so bring an umbrella and if you don't have on there is usually a spot under one of ours available.

I bought this tent-like thing a couple of months ago that is supposed to be a sort of wind break (has screening stuff for the walls). I've never set it up, so don't know how useful it will really be, but it just might provide some shade.

So, the real question is: Are you going flying today even if it starts raining right when they deliver it to your door?   ;D

Then of course on the way to work today it's perfect to try it out.  Figures.

Mamba's here in town! Oh man, what if I have to go potty and they don't wait around for me to sign for it?
How was it shipped? Here UPS, FedEx and the Post Office just toss them out the door on their way by it seems ... well almost, sometimes they will throw them over the fence onto the lawn in the sprinklers, once in a while they will get them up on the driveway and on the odd occassions they've brought something to the porch, but NEVER in the last 10 years has one of them knocked, honked or made any effort to get a signature or confirm they are at the right house & somebody is always home during our service times, we only find them when we leave. Been a UPS package on my porch for a few days now that's not addressed to me, you wanna come get it Doc?

I never have anything shipped signature required since they still won't knock, they just a leave a door hanger on the fence, sometimes the door, once on the car out in the driveway, none have ever knocked on my door. Anymore if it's something I want I ask for it to be shipped "Hold at will-call" and pick it up myself.

Opposite experience here. USPS and UPS open the back gate and set the box at the patio door if no-one is home. I haven't had a Fed-Ex to home in a long time so  can't say, but they tend to be more business friendly.

It's here and it's exquisite. Oh man, just gorgeous.

Mike, it was shipped USPS Priority mail, insured with a required signature. I've always had pretty good luck with delivered packages, but I do notice they don't take as much care as they used to-- no knock, leaving on the front porch. As it happens, though, this package was delivered by my regular delivery guy rather than by one of the big trucks in a separate delivery. This guy takes care of his neighborhood and I know he would've taken great care of it if I hadn't been home (seems to really love the people on his route).

Smeagol, are you coming to the Ripon Fly??? You're so close! Not tons of wind here today either-- usually don't get it until about 4pm. Today it's a question of which will come first, rain or wind.

Well, I'm off to figure out this tensioning stuff and the stand-offs. Glad I thought to print Ken's Help notes last week.

See ya later!

You should venture down to Elk Grove in the afternoons and evenings. It's been blowin' pretty good! The trick is trying to find a field with smoothish air. The best bets for that here are on the south end of town, beyond the Automall and before Grantline. The only problem is, they are dirt fields and it really make a mess of your kite and lines.
Pleasant Grove HS has a fairly open set of fields that look good, but I haven't tried them yet.

Heh.... finally got it put together after a couple of fits and starts (that tensioning stuff is tight at first!). I think everything is right-side up. It's a little disconcerting that "this goes here .....>" isn't printed on the spreaders like it is on Prism kites (lol). Now it's raining at a pretty good clip, don'tcha know. It's all good. I've got kite bags to muck out.

Nancy, who is sorry for the thread hijack.

Title: Re: Ripon monthly fly

Yeah, USPS is always usually good to me, they leave it right on the porch sometimes leaned up against the door.  If the package is not insured you will not need to sign.  I didn't have to sign when the Mamba arrived Saturday, he just left it, rang the doorbell and then drove off.

Oops I see you've already replied.  Glad to hear it arrived safely.

I hearya on the tensioning, it's a little different than some other kites but it works well.  There are videos on BMK's site that show how to tension the LE.  I'm curious to see where the spreader locations are on yours vs. mine.  Is yours the Mamba or black Mamba?

Yeah I'll be @ the Ripon fly.. I'm somewhat of a regular I guess you could say.  ;)

AKA:  I used to hit up Elk Grove park once in awhile, but this was ages ago.  Last time I was out there the trees seemed to be taking over, so it was more difficult to find a decent flying spot.

Mike,
Yep, EG park is really a difficult place to fly. The trees along the western edge just chew up the wind and spit out nothing but bumpy air.
Across 99 and just a little south are some huge open field. Easily a mile or more of no obstructions. The air is usually smooth, but again, the ground is just dirt. Even the parking lots for the proposed mall are cleaner, but asphalt just doesn't give. One lawn dart and say goodbye.

I'll check out PGHS's fields and let you know what it's like there.

What site are you using for weather info? The ones I use are weather.com and wunderground.com and both have winds at 6mph max. Does the one you're using tend to be more accurate for the field we'll be using? For what it's worth, I like your forecast way-better than mine!

It's the link I posted on the first page of this thread.  IT's changed since I looked at it a few hours ago.  SAys 6 now but this time of year it changes constantly.  6-11 mildly gusty is common after a storm front

Ha! I just went back to weather.com -- was trying to get to the detailed/hourlyforecast for Sunday, when I saw the transfer stuff on the status bar at the bottom of the window. Did you know that there's a Ripon in Canada? A search for Ripon, CA may not be what it seems.

In any case, here's a link to the detailed stuff for Sunday-- nothing available beyond 12pm, though that'll likely change by tonight:

WeatherBug on the 'Droid has the extended forecast through next Wednesday, it uses the Stockton Airport 10 miles or so away.

12am 6mph
1am - 2am = 5mph
3am - 7am = 4mph
8am - 2pm = 3mph
3pm - 6pm = 4mph
7pm - 9pm = 5mph

Saturday looks worse, Monday marginally better. Oh well, things change and I don't know Ripon. It looks much more open then Chico, here we need to see 6-8mph minimum before we'll see 3-4 on the ground. If you've got a pretty clean 3mph I can get in the air.

Here's a link using ripons zip code. http://www.weather.com/weather/weekend/95366 (http://www.weather.com/weather/weekend/95366)  Wind there is fairly clean for inland flying.  If its 6mph 30 feet up at the meters its 4-6 on the ground and 3-4 below grade.  THe orchards about 1/2 mile in either direction seem to help smooth out gusts so its not such a harsh spike.  Stocktons Airport is about 20 miles aways and not a good reference point for ripon.  Can be as much as 5 mph difference. between the two.

Here's a Sat view.  WE normally park in the spots right on the river road entrance but if there is soccer going by chance we move to the dirt lot by the water tower.

Looking good for Sunday.  80 high and 8mph winds in the forecast.

What site are you using for weather info? The ones I use are weather.com and wunderground.com and both have winds at 6mph max. Does the one you're using tend to be more accurate for the field we'll be using? For what it's worth, I like your forecast way-better than mine!

6mph that works for me that's my favorite speed, nice for slack line tricks ;D  4-6 mph for slack line tricks 8)

Yup, and my lawndart maneuvers are ever so soft in those winds, too.  ;-)

Mike'nChico, here's the latest from weather.com:

10am - 11am = 4mph
12pm -  1pm = 5mph
 2pm -   3pm = 6mph
 4pm -   6pm = 7mph

I'd say things are looking up! I cannot wait to watch all y'all do your thing.

I was out and about this morning. The upper field is full, set up for soccer. The lower field about half set for soccer. The open section is towards the pergola. We generally park in the dirt below the water tower when pushed to this section and deal with the foot traffic heading across the field to the bathrooms.

Good to see everyone today and get in some light wind flying!

Turns out my big ol' skyshark framed Firestorm flys in pretty much no wind. I did a really long sloooow 360 and didn't break a sweat.

It was the first kite gathering for Penny and she had a good time. Y'all made a good first impression.  :)

Penny shot a lot of photos. We'll have em up tomorrow.

Was great having you back Allen and Nice meeting PEnny.  Hopefully next time we'll have better winds and we can put a kite in her hands as well.  Too bad the chico folks couldn't make it out this time but there's always another time.

Yes, it was good hanging out again and meeting the new folks.  I had a blast flying the new BMK's.

Allen, that Firestorm looked great with the lighter frame.  I'm tempted to try framing mine w/Rev rods ala Whangdoodle.  ;D  Might be an interesting experiment.

I had a ton of fun yesterday, wind or no wind. It was a good lesson for me to see that kites really can fly in no-wind conditions. I have a lot to learn. After most of you guys left, Anthony flew my Mamba standard all over the place. Oh man, it was so cool. It was so much fun meeting everyone and well worth the trip.

Thanks everyone!

Nancy

We kept talking about making the trip right up untl Sat. night, but a freind had came by Friday night and spent the night, he hadn't been into Upper Bidwell Park for years and we needed the exercise, plus you don't have to ask me twice to hit our park. So out to breakfast, the upper park road was open so we were able to drive up and take a few different hikes and see areas I haven't been into for years either. Ran a couple errands, a late dinner and didn't get home until 11:30 PM. Hated missing it after looking forward to it for a couple weeks but we were beat by the time we got home and turned out we both had to work Monday.

I've got A bunch of photos just about ready to go-- will upload them later today. I keep thinking about all I learned on Sunday-- mostly how much I don't know, but it sure was fun. My new lines arrived yesterday (75ft Speedline), so I am hopeful I'll have some actual wind today. Yesterday started out promising, but then it dropped down to what we had in Ripon. It rained on Monday, so that was a wash too. So to speak.

Okay, here they are. I still have a ton of editing on the gallery I installed, but I'm tired of messing with it. Ignore the "BY NLC" on each thumbnail. I'll have to edit some templates, I think. In any case, at least it no longer says "BY GALLERY ADMINISTRATOR."

Definitely a good looking sail on your Mamba Nancy.  http://www.madhabitz.com/gallery/Ripon-Fun-Fly/0414mamba (http://www.madhabitz.com/gallery/Ripon-Fun-Fly/0414mamba) THe shot of Johns TNT looking like its planted on the water tower is great.

Thanks George-- it was fun to take pictures again, but I miss my old Canon DSLR and good lenses. This little Nikon does okay, but it's a lot to get used to. I am even having to learn to edit all over again.

I've got a few more of you that show you flying your dual line-- got one decent one of your kite, but you are cut off (just your arm is there) and one of you, but with your kite cut in half. Oy. I was never great at action shots, but at least with the DSLR I could machine gun it and have a chance of at least one good shot. In any case, when I get the time, I'll get those up for you to have.

Thanks Anthony, I'm more and more happy with that sail layout. I'm already planning (in my head at this point) my UL and Vented Mambas.

Maybe some of that stuff you tried to teach me will sink in after I learn some slack line management when I've got some wind. Man, you guys were so good at this stuff! I was so impressed!!
