Not kite related, but still very cool in a geeky way.  :)

How bad would you need work before you'd apply for that job?

Heli pilot needs a ton of credit too.

I saw a program on the Discovery Channel about people doing this type of work.  Amazing, but I think their a few cans short of a 6 pack for dealing with all of that voltage.  The helicopter ride wouldn't bother me, but the voltage would.  1 mistake and your history up there.

Having spent about 45 minutes this evening flying fighter kites in a HV transmission corridor, I thought this might be "closer to the bone" for me.

I think I once posted an old video of me giving a 6' aluminized-mylar NPW5 its maiden voyage in that same HV transmission corridor. There was just a breath of wind, so the kite was moving at slower than walking speed, doing slow "infinity" patterns. Very magical.

A year or two later, I managed to accidentally fly that same kite close enough to the line to get some loud "buzzing". Haven't done that again since. . . Carbon fiber rods don't get along well with transmission lines, either -- don't ask me how I know!

The best part is how he has to reach with that conducting rod and establish the connection through the air (it takes ALOT of voltage to jump that far!), and then actually hooks up the heli to the wire before climbing off.  Amazing work.

The comment at the end with the only three things he's ever been afraid of...electricity, heights, and women.   :D

Extremely cool video. I have never seen anything like it before. Thanks for the post!
