Title: Solus Standard #01, and UltraLite #01.
Post by: adx1592 on August 11, 2011, 01:08 AM
Hey guys,
It's been awhile sence we've mentioned anything about the Solus from skyburner (new for 2012) so we figured I'd post something and keep everyone in the loop. The Solus Standard and UL #1 have arrived in Michigan and are going through final testing. Jons back in action, first sails have been sewn and shipped and we've got everything SO CLOSE we can taste it. The kite will be in full swing soon. Those of you who've flown the kite at kite party, we've made the extra offset just a little bit longer, and moved the fittings on the upper spreader down just a little bit to make tracking even better. We had the kite flying in 20mph winds today, and all the way down to about 4 as the night went on, and it's been doing well. Keep your eyes pealed and I'll keep updating this as things move forward into the final stage of things. Pics of the standard #1 below, with the Solus Logo, designed by Wayne Brunjies (thanks Wayne!).

For those of you who didn't go to kite party, the Solus is a bigger kite (larger then the WM) that's got all the tricks in it, but keeps a consistent speed in high winds which makes it suitable for team flying and competition. Tricks like a Widowmaker with quick rollups and all that jazz, but with just as light of an input, or lighter. We've had quite a few people test the kite, so maybe we can get a few of them to chime in and elaborate more on the kite and what they think.

Some quick frame specs on the standard:
Lower Leading Edges, and Lower Spreaders are Nitros (Black Diamond clear coat LSs)
Spine is a P300
Upper Spreader is a P100

Anywho, here's the Standard Solus, #1. Custom Sail.

UL pics, more standard pics (both on the 2nd page of this thread), and a video of both coming soon!

My first, on purpose, double yo-yo was with that prototype. I offered to buy it from Jon on the spot as is.

You've got a great kite there Devin. Alex Herzog loved it also and he was making it work out.

The black/white custom sail looks sweet too.  :)  When is the colorizer going up?  :P

I only flew the kite for a few minutes but I liked it a lot. There's wasn't enough room to really fly the thing (and it was on short lines) but it was very easy to trick. Didn't feel as big as it is. Surprising was my comment at the time.

As soon as Jon and Devin can stop flying, we should have one here in Vegas for demo's as well.  I am really excited about this big wing kite and can't wait to finally fly the final version.  The Proto at KP was awesome, hard to realize that now it is even better.

 :P :P :P :P :P :P :P

Can not tell you the feel of this kite... I have had to keep my mouth shut for months....  High wind forget it...It will fly like a vented only lighter... I flew both the same day ... ???.  Last night I did two rungs of a Jacob's Ladder ......... kite did it.  540's a joke.. axels let it do it for you .  I am not allowed to say I ordered one like Devins............for pairs ... It will improve your flying every time you fly it..

If your a Novice flyer or improved beginner... Buy This Kite..( when production begins )  early Christmas present ..........  You won't change kites, you'll change line strength.

Very smooth tracking and no over steer.

The great and very good flyer's will go crazy over it ...........  Watching Devin spank it is exciting in itself.  The little Creep-O sets his goal of breaking something.  Slams it down on the wings and they flex to his demand.  He fly's hard and fast with heavy pull... When I take the lines I need them changed two notches.

We fly Sunday..maybe a video with "Little Creep-O" flying the heck out of it ..then me taking over on same settings would give a clear understanding of the kites versatility... ???  Many tricks vs. a dog and pony show from a four trick pony like myself... :D :D ... Been learning a lot flying it.  BTW ... 540's ... "...Foe get about it ...". :-\

Oh, great... another kite that I NEED to have...

Well, it's good news that it's a BIG kite, I like that... the graphics are nice, can't wait to mess with the colorizer.

So, this takes the place of the Widow Maker ? Should I scratch the WM UL off of my short list of kites to get next, and just go for a Solus ?

Any explaination of what the Solus does better than the WM ? The WM has been my goto kite for ~6 months, and of all the kites I have, it's most suited to my kind of flying. In other words... it does what I expect it to when I ask it to, nothing unexpected.

When's the demo going to make it to the east coast ?  ;D

~Rob.

Thanks for the thoughts and impressions, everyone. :)

Rob, it really depends on what you like. I'll be updating this thread a lot on updates with the kites, especially the UL. Picking it up and tying bridles for it with Jon tomorrow at 10am.

The Solus is bigger, flies slower (tricks about the same speed at the WM though), and has more of a 'presence' in the sky. I love both and I think they compliment each other very, VERY well. If you have high winds though and you feel the WM gets faster, I'd get a std Solus and use that as almost a higher wind extension for the WM std. Using it with the brakes that Jon sells too is also a great idea. Still flies great. This kite rolls up faster than the WM, and all around requires a lighter touch then on the WM as well. PM me if you have any more questions and I'd be glad to answer anything for you to the best of my abilities.

Another update- I think the standard is totally dialed in. I moved the upper spreader down just a bit more (then did all kinds of expirements with sizes of tubes in there, placements with different sizes, etc) and with a stock U.S. with it lower then we moved it wednesday, the kite tracks better and is even smoother, and pitches way better. This is the fist time I've done really clean Inverses, Rolled up Cyniques, and my first good YoFade with ANY kite. Nothing else trick wise or flight wise is sacrificed with this new placement. Fades are a lot better as well, and they were solid to begin with. I think the biggest noticeable difference is now the kite flies about as smooth as a babies but, to be blunt. Winds were about 2mph up to about 7mph. I felt like a kid in a candy store- this is the first time all summer I've really enjoyed flying by myself and just loving a quiet place and a kite bouncing around at the end of my lines. Video soon, hopefully filming on sunday or saturday.

I'm picking up the UL tomorrow and am really going to be moving things around and cranking on it as much as possible as I can the next few days, to get the absolute best result I can. Will keep everyone posted and will post some pics before I have to deal with the dinner rush at work tomorrow night!

It means they overcame the problem of excessive onset.  The bane of any kite designer.

Pretty sure that's it.... ::)

The extra offset is similar to the king's new clothes. Only us cool people can see them.

Zippy8, you are not cool enough to see the new clothes.  ::)

The knots aren't easy to see, but the Offset is also known as the yolk I think. The short leg on a turbo bridle.
Originally we started as a 3 point, then a turbo, then made that leg longer at KP9, then I made it even longer on wednesday. This is the only shot I could get with the knots kind of visible, the rest were really hard to see (well, even harder to see), even after being enhanced by Iphoto. The slack leg you see on the right is the lower outhaul.

Got to test the UL today  :)
Picked it up from the shop and got to go out for awhile. I'm really pleased with this one. The upper spreader fittings are still lower like the standard, but the Upper Outhaul leg is shorter just a little bit. Kept the nose just a litttttle bit forward and its flying really nice.

For those wondering how to compare to a UL WidowMaker, picture a bigger kite, still slower, thats capable of 1 pop roll ups, Good WapDoWaps, etc. 540/slots are still easy as pie & super flat. JLs, Multilazies, Cyniques, snaplazys, and insanes (etc) are good too- the kite's been pitching well enough to really knock it around when its on its back. Also capable of 2 rotations when you hit a lazy susan really hard.

Tracking is really nice and the kites flying really smooth. Good pull in light winds and it doesn't get finicky in high winds either. Winds today were 2mph gusting to 10mph. Square cuts are clean and  there isn't any oversteer, and the UL will sit there and wait for your next move after its put into a stall (even in high winds). Holds a fade great as well.

Some frame specs on the UL-
ULE and LLE are 2pts
Lower Spreaders are 3pt black diamond clear coat
Spine is a p100

Some pics start linked to the first pics, but I'll post some extras too.

2PT leading edges?

Do you have a weight for the standard and UL?

Just wondering.

Same weight as the WM (19 grams) for the Standard Solus, and about 10ish grams for the Ultralite Solus (as well as the ultralite WM). :)

Am I close?

Just dropped off the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$  8)

I am getting #2 std.  I was able to get the colorizer from Jon.... Some other's may be getting an e mail with it....

Planned on matching the kites for pairs...............  But I may have to get the Ul matching.  The colorizer will have me up for a week... I may go with some Black,Dk.gray,Lt. gray, orange,white...........  John Chelise do you have a photo of the other proto type ???  It was auctioned at Kite Party .... 2011'.

New Widow Maker coming next week to match Ul .... sold Yellow and Black WM and Delta Drive ... I felt like the guys in Apollo 13 .  Saying good bye to a beautiful ship and memories.  She flew in 1-2mph wind yesterday on our last time together I did axels,540's,fade,turtle and lazy susan,,, almost didn't sell.

Denny,  You do not want to see the video..................  It is fantastic.  Very good production and views of the kite.  Not the crap ola' I put out.  Real professionally done by Wayne Burnjies.  It's coming soon.  I watched it twice today... It is really nice..

When are you going to send it down my way?  both of them look good.  Did the bridle change much since i last flew it?

John/Allen- we don't have a 'weighed' weight yet, but I'll let you know asap.

Joe- I'm really glad you got #2! I'll call you tonight with details about flying tomorrow in the next few mins. Hopefully the rain will hold off.

John M- Thanks! The bridles have changed, yes. The offset on the turbo bridle is bigger, and the upper spreader fittings have been moved down as well.

Denny- Wayne did a video, yes. I will also be doing them with the kites pictured. Standard and UL vids to come asap. Hopefully we'll get good weather, as I'm leaving in exactly one week for chicago for move in. Will keep you posted!

Got to fly the UL in high winds today. Flew it around 12-14 on the 3nd knot from the bottom and it was doing really well. No chatter and good speed control. The 2pts hold up really well in a bigger kite. Nothing finicky in high winds with the UL, very solid. Again, video coming soon!

Darn Colorizer ..............  >:( >:( I changed the colors on my Solus std.  I played all week-end.  :D :D  Finally settled for same, same proto  :P with Grays and Orange ....  There are 11 different panels you can play with..............  A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H,I,J,K,L    ??? ???  My Ul will match Devin's Ul ..............  If Northerly winds show up as they do in early fall ... I am going to be ready ...
This kite handles High and Low winds as stated.

If your a fan of the "Widow Maker"  ( just sold mine ... waiting for new one this week . :'( )  :'(... This kite should make you very happy... You won't leave either one down.  Solus will fly for you .... I truly believe the more experienced flyer's on this site are going to love it.  They have been working on this kite for months.  Perfecting every little nic and cranny..........  I am not that mechanical lucky I can tie my own shoe laces...

But I can observe well.  I am learning the language they use to make changes ..i.e. "The Yoke " , Point of Attack... All regarding moving or lowering the spreader or stand offs.  and different bridle adjustments...

It is just not sewn together and here's a new kite.  Has to be able to do every trick in the book and then some...  I have watched so many guys put the kite through the hoops.  At least 20 different flyer's easily ... Every guy has a smile on his face afterwards.  ;D

Andy's advise is simple and pure. "...If I don't fly,it I won't want it ...".
Carpe' Diem ... Let the buyer beware >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ;) ;)

Remember... I am BIAS and I am not that good of a flyer to make these strong statements.  But a broken watch is right twice a day .. :-\ :-\ :-\

Thank you for the very kind words Joe. I'm glad you're getting No.2 UL as well. :) You have to send me pics when you get them! I doubt they'll be in before move in on saturday but we'll see! I hope so!

As for the video, we didn't get to film sunday. The weather was CRAP! Super cloudy, high changes of rain, and super variable winds. Wednesday looks GREAT THOUGH. Hoping to get some good standard footage with Jon and then as the sun is setting getting some UL footage as the wind slowly comes down.  :)

Hey guys, thanks for the kind words about the new kite. I have both videos done and in Jons email inbox, waiting for the A O K to post on here. Keep your eyes pealed.

One thing I'd like to add/clear up is that this new kite is in NO way a 'replacement' for the WidowMaker. They're both different birds with a whole different personality, but when you get to know both kites, changing between the WM and the Solus is extremely easy, even though the inputs are different. Joe (vertigo2u) has been flying both like he's been flying them for months and the final products of each kite are only about a week old (5 days for the UL). If you have a WM on your wishlist, by all means go for it, because it's a fan- freakin'-tastic kite (to be blunt)!  :) Think of these two kites as the two 'brothers' of the skyburner family.

Long story short- if you like one, you'll like the other. So far out of all the Widowmaker flyers that I've asked to test this kite, they've all said they like both a lot. It'll take a little bit to get used to because of the lighter inputs on a bigger kite yes, but the results are really rewarding.  :) Keep your eyes pealed for the video.

In other news about the UL- we changed the tail weight from 10-11 to 12 and that hit the sweet spot. Makes backspins WAY easier and doesn't affect anything else, including low wind range. We all had some fun with this kite at the field tonight.

Also, news about the colorizer, if you haven't gotten an email with it yet, it'll be up sometime this week on the SB site!  :)

Thanks all,
Devin

Ok! The colorizer and the new page for the Solus are now on the skyburner site (with Waynes video also).

Thanks all for reading and posting in this thread, and thanks to Jon and Marieanne for everything they've done though this whole process!  :)

Have fun wrapping your head around the colorizer, it completely wrecked me when I did mine, bahaha.  :D

Happy flying!

I tried out the colorizer and found it very entertaining. I think I found a great color design. I was wondering if the Solus was for sale yet?

I don't often chime in but I just wanted to say that it was so much fun working with Devon on the Solus.  His input was tremendous.  He has certainly surpassed me as a flyer and the Solus from start to finish has name and personality all over it.  I've been flying with Devin since he was around four years old and his abilities amazed me then and still amaze me now. It's good to know young flyers like Devin and Alex that have so much passion for the sport.  Both of them are both incredible musicians as well kite flyers and hopefully will meet and fly together for the first time at the Kite Party's 10th anniversary in Huntington Beach.  Should be quite a show.

Working with ME? It was working with YOU that was such an amazing experience! I have everything we've talked about logged into a kiting notebook for the future so I can keep learning. You're the one that's been the great source of everything over all the years! Thank you so much and thanks for the kind words, and I can't WAIT for kiteparty!  :) Talk to you soon!
