Title: A quick 'look what I got' video..
Post by: WinterDaze on August 30, 2011, 06:28 PM
Here's a quicky of my new kite, I've had it out for about 40 mins now, as to adapting inputs across from the Talon? I've never met a more agreeable wing  8)

Hope you like :)

nice smooth flying. by the looks of it, you're going to enjoy that kite. i know mine is the most fun kite in my bag.
i especially like the tagline at the end. it's where i live; tricks flowing, enjoying the show, then realizing i'm controlling the thing and immediately it falls from the sky.

thanks for the video, it's a delight.

Nice flyin' Shannon.....Have yet to get a decent wind with ours yet... :'(

Compared to the Fearlae I can tell this is a small input kite........hoping I can tone it down and make it sweet someday.

Wasted Bandwidth alrighty :)

Looking fine!  I can finally watch it - I was 'shut out' from viewing it (licensing restrictions) for a day or so - but it works now.  Thks for the video.  :)

Hi all,

This is my first UL weighted kite  ::), I've got 3-4 SUL's and 3-4 standards that get regular air time, and I knew there was a 'gap' in my range of kites, but until I got the UL out onto the field I didn't know how much I was missing ???

I'm loving how well the Talon UL loads up in the 5-7knot winds, tight as a drum yet with a step or 2 forward it releases it's grip and is ready to listen to my inputs.

With a 'standard' I'm right on the line drive wise at that speed, and I know backward stepping is going to be needed to complete some of the tricks and also to give the sail authority.

I'm looking forward to summer now  ;D

I completely agree.  ULs have long been my favorite - the perfect combination of kite drive and low enough wind to easily do all the tricks, but also effortlessly fly sharply.

I appreciate flying a powered-up kite that is easy to stall and if it makes some noise all the better!  :).

They are fragile though.  One has to be a good flyer who knows what he/she is doing.  One hard landing would result a $20 part cost with a week of waiting while it is been shipped…

Nice flying Shannon.  Wish I could ht duplexes that clean, hell I want to hit any tricks that clean :P I hear the UL doesn't feel as empty on the lines as the STD (which feels like nothing in 15 mph to me).  Whats your take?

Hi Anthony,

Cheers for the comments, 'clean' at the viewers end is to the pilot, 'something very familiar'...

The duplex is a simple combo, but both elements (flic flac and backspin) are tricks that have many degrees of competency, but to 'combo up' I've found I have to be at at least 80+% on both before it starts to look 'on purpose'  :-[ any less has too much 'thinking', and your smoothness looses out ::)

It's all about the basics, and constant correct repartition.

Kaizen- small but constant ongoing improvements, for ever...

On the "Empty on the lines" comment, not sure where you've read it, but as to feedback from the Talon STD, I find it has the most agreeable 'touch' of all the kites in my bag, I fly off finger straps and hate hard pulling kites, and the STD will still let me be the boss out to 15mph without hassle, but it also has a great 'wind window graduation' by that I mean that it steps down it drive with predicable degrees of force, and that's something that not all modern kites do. True it doesn't pull like a Quantum but that's a good think in my book.  8)

@ PAW "Praise from the praiseworthy is praise indeed" cheers  :)

@dihongshao2000  ;) Order x3, no one likes to wait  8)

THe talon Std I have flown a few times had no feed back.  In 12 -17 mph it literally felt like there was nothing on the end of the lines.  I've towed around feathers on strings as line laundry that had more pull than the talon I flew.  To put it another way there was no resistance when a trick input was given so no positive feed back to judge needed input strength by.  YOu could go light as a feather or old school yank n spank and still get the same "pull it out of the sky" result like the kite had no drive at all.

I suspect there is something wrong with the setup of the one you flew.  12 to 17 mph raises dust and litter from the ground, and at the beach there are whitecaps on the water.  The Talon I've flown pulls fairly well in that sort of wind.

+1 Kevin

Talon remains tricky out to 14 for me for very short bursts,
you cover alot of ground in a short time at that speed, it's more
about the 'speed' of the input, sure there's a little bit more pepper on it, but not much more, remember it's still about relative wind speed. higher speed is no 'stronger' per say, just faster.

Great flying!! I only have the Talon UL... But I love it!  ;D Your flying is inspirational and makes me want to get out there and learn more. ... However, After flying the "loaned" Widow Maker" for the past 3 months while my UL was being fixed I need to get used to it again... They are very different kites. I also must agree to some point with Dihongshao2000 to a point... I have had my kite back for 3 weeks and have already broken 2 3pt's and let a kid fly it and now the p90 and nose are going to need to be fixed...  :( :( :'(... :D oh well. I still love it and it's all for the fun!

Find out what caused this, bottle it, and send me some please!  :D

I flew mine for over a year and never had that experience.

Nice video Shannon.  ;)

IF I get my hands on this particular talon again I'm definitely going to check things over and see if I can figure out whats causing it.  THe lack of pull is only equaled by the lack of drive in the kite.  Kind of like trying to fly it a couple mph below the botom of the wind range.

Further confirmation that this is very unlike normal Talon behaviour.  If you get much above 12mph, the kite is so powered up in the centre of the window that the wing tips will will start to shudder to release pressure from the sail and you won't want to be tricking other than right at the edge of the window.

The Talon lacks neither power nor feedback in that wind strength.    ???

When I was viewing the kite near the ground after a trick sequence I see the kite drop QUICKLY to a two point landing a couple of times. Is this kite heavy. Normally, after an identical trick sequence like yours my kite HOVERS off the ground. Do you have a lot of tail weight on your kite???

Nice flying!

Hi John,

You might need to be more specific as to what part of the video you're referring to where it drops, but to answer the second question, this Talon UL is in it's 'fresh from Mark' stock configuration, just added a little sand evenly to the whole sail during this session  ;D

Oh and John what kite are you comparing it to?

Regards,

WD

Two examples at 0:57 & 1:33. Its probably just your style, intentional or something else??? - the kite seems to drop abnormally quick to a two point landing. No big deal of course - its seems UNEXPECTED to me and was just curious.

APJ,

Umm....  for want of a better word lets call it 'style' as in 'I meant it'  ;)

I tend to like to touch down fairly often, partly from a VF habit, and partly to help casual viewers understand that this is an exhibition of kite control, rather than the opposite  :D

I have many many ways of getting to the hard deck, this is one from the catalogue of controlled landings, the other catalogue has far more options in it   :-X  ;)
