Title: Super...
Post by: zippy8 on November 12, 2011, 02:33 AM
...fly.

It is required that a link to this new kite (http://www.chrisgoffkites.com/superfly) be placed on all kite forums. I am merely fulfilling this requirement.

Wind range 3 to 25 mph..... now where have I read that before ? ;)

Mike.

Great wind range, light pull, eager for tricks, sounds like my kind of kite!   The asymmetric panel initially looked like a graphic mistake to me, but it's growing on me.

I'm sure its a great flyer, but the sail pattern is very reminiscent of the late 80s, 90s.
I'd personally prefer something more modern looking though, or able to be more easily customised colour wise. (sorry, we spell 'colour' this way downunder! )
I suppose it is getting hard to come up with new patterns and not tread on the toes of other manufacturers. I'd still like to try one though. : )

Looks like a fun kite.
I wonder how much the shipping will be?

Yup, just edging out R-Sky's 15.

Just hold on.... another will be along shortly ;D

"Wind range 3 to 25 mph...."

With Chris Goff at the other end of the lines, sure.  ::)

If you merely run a 6 minute mile with the wind, that drops the apparent wind speed from 25 mph to 15 mph.

Or, by running backward at a 6 minute mile, the low end 3 mph becomes 13 mph.  :)

I'd do a video to show you, but that sail pattern isn't quite interesting enough to make me pop for one.

At least the Ocius sail pattern was different.

Or, by running backward at a 6 minute mile...
....you'll be just outside world record pace (and faster than anyone had ever run prior to 2004).

The panel layout is a little bland IMHO but that's about the only thing that isn't interesting about this kite to me. I do want to see how it behaves in the hands of a few other people before I get all excited. I have an Element, you know ;)

Mike.

According to Chris, the panel layout is designed that every line points at a corner of the kite (nose, spine, stand offs and the asymmetry is to help with getting your orientation during fast flowing tricks).  More functional than aesthetic, although it's not unattractive.

I flew the Stella winning proto this summer at Crantock in a horrible gusting 15-20mph wind and it was a handful for me.  However I think that says more about my skill levels than the kite, as there were plenty of other fliers who really liked it.

As you'd expect from Chris, it does offer something slightly different from the norm, but it is much, much more mainstream than the Element, which I've found 'interesting' every time I've flown one.

According to the link, the nostalgic quotient of the sail pattern was entirely intentional:

"I wanted the sail layout to nod to the kites of old, keeping the overall appearance simple and effective so that the SuperFly stands out on a kite field."

To be fair, Chris is really just starting up right now so I think it's wise to stay with fixed schemes which are more cost effective to him. After a while you might see him opening up to customs.

Yeah but it's flight characteristics sucked... I doubt the super fly would perform as bad....

Considering how many Ocius kites have been sold, a lot of people must like those sucky flight characteristics.

And so nice of you to compare the Ocius to a kite you probably haven't flown.  ::)

"Flight" characteristics sucked ? Skyburner kite ?
Yeah right.

When I first got my Ocius, I was a little intimidated with it but once my skills improved, I began to appreciate just how incredible this kite actually is.  I now own 4 Ocius's and love every one of them.  I would say that the Ocius flight characteristics is on par with some of the best made sport kites on the market today.

I know that we have sold many of them and not one has ever been returned.

**sorry to venture off topic**

I would really like the chance to fly this new kite and I hope he does well with it.  This industry could always use more designers/builders and variety.

According to Chris, shipping to the left coast will be 25 pounds.
That makes the delivered price about $380 @ today's exchange rate.
Good thing its almost Christmas.

Your right, I have not flown the Super fly, but I also did say that I doubt it would fly as bad. Still do doubt it.
Looking forward to this kite making it's way down under, its good to see new builders on the block, instead of shops shutting their doors.

"Flight" characteristics sucked ? Skyburner kite ?
Yeah right.

A popular Skyburner kite does not make it good....just popular. Whilst the kite does trick, it feels reluctant at times to do so and is less fun and harder to fly,,,, hence for me it sucks!

HMM  I haven't found a trick the ocius can't do once you figure out how it liked the inputs. Doncrash has a set(that i have flown on a few occasions) and what he gets out of them pretty much runs the trick gamut.  NOt every kite works for everyone and if it doesn't work for ya that doesn't mean its a bad kite just not the right kite for you.  JUst like a lot of people love the talon but I can't do anything with that kite myself but crash it.  IS it a bad kite? NOpe just not a kite that works for me.

The superfly looks promising and I'd like to try one, but then again most any kite looks good in Chris' hands.  THe focus on turtle based tricks makes me wonder how other tricks are.  Easy turtle based stuff may mean a bit of difficulty in other trick areas.  Strong turtles can mean harder JL's but who knows what this kite will be like in hands other than Chris'.

Denny - Get one. I'd have to stop by then ;D

The kite doesn't look bad. Believe me if you enjoy tricking this kite it will look better and better to you ;)

Had a go with the Superfly here in the uk last month and really liked it. It was blowing somewhere between the mid teens and low twenties but chris Chris made it look like the wind was a lot lighter. It doesn't pull too much which is really nice and needs very little slack which is great in that type of wind. Jl's were just fine. I've heard that it is fantastic in lighter wind too. I love the panel layout, classic with touch of anarchy :)

Had a go on the final prototype today in less than ideal wind.

I don't think anybody who has one on order is going to be disappointed.

I thought this kite would have created some kind of a buzz by now.
Has anyone actually got one yet ?
Any recent reviews around ?

It seems there have been problems getting the kites out, a few have been doing some of the larger shows and I believe that one or two have got out to customers but a lot of people are still waiting.  To be fair I don't think Chris Goff realised just how much interest there was going to be in the kite and instead of getting the (maybe) tens of orders he was anticipating he got many times more than that. Those that have actually flown the kite seem very impressed.

Oh there's buzz, but it's more like a grinding of teeth.

Yes. One person has. PAW posted a snap of his on March the 14th. I haven't seen confirmation of any others.

It is the next kite to save the world.

Wow, one kite in 6 months.
Perhaps he should consider selling the design to a kite maker.

To be scrupulously accurate he has made at least 3 others for customers but has been unable to complete the task of posting them to date. I don't recall any word about the one given as a prize in VF21 either.

I thought that was the first one sent out but thats just and unconfirmed rumor.  However the few pics that have been posted I saw some custom colors (neon greens and hot pinks)  and it was said he wouldn't do custom colors.
