Title: Kite you wish you didn't buy
Post by: kitekrazy on March 11, 2012, 08:22 PM
Rare is fly before you buy.

1. Stranger Level 7.   Proprietary parts do not make a great kite. Preston designs are often overrated. I guess when I get to a field I the less time I spend assembling and tweaking the better.  I never could find the perfect wind for what limited experience I had with this kite.

2. Older vented Tramontana. Venting followed design. Didn't handle very well.

Dodd's designs produced by Eolo.  The designs were fine but the build quality sucked.

I opened a "kite shop for a day"  back then to sell kites and teach lessons at a kite fest that our club was helping get started.  Had about 12 of various models and problems with almost everyone.  First step, Next Step, Freestyle, etc...

The first one that started the addicition :D

BV Sonic, meh.

Cal WASP, just cant get it to fly right. I suspect something is amiss with this particular kite given the popularity of WASPs generally.

Utopia, couldn't see what all the fuss was about.

Vented Sandpiper 95, I love Sandpipers but the vent was a stinker.

OTOH I love Level 7s, L1 Challenge and all sorts of other things people hate.

LiteFlite Radial - one man could make that kite "work" and that one man was the designer. I was not that man, nor were many other people.

Pretty much everything else has had at least one redeeming quality (or has been moved along for only a small loss).

Mike.

Hmm I shall have to add this to the try list along with the SL7 if the opportunity ever arises.  Happen to have a pic or link Mike?

Utopia-- Great kite if you like constantly tinkering.  Hours of tinkering for a few minutes of bliss until the wind changed and its back to tinkering ???

Hq E-motion (non ITW version)--Worst build quality I've ever seen.  Mis match spars and fittings, horrible sewing

To make Mike happy, a picture of my Radial  :D

And no, I can't fly it properly with sliding bridle (yet??), but when one came up for sale for 8, I couldn't resist, given its notoriety.

I have to give the Airbow  the  #1 spot on my poo-poo list
way to much hype for the price and under rated wind conditions

I might agree with you here but I've had mine for quite a few months and have not had the opportunity to fly it yet. It does seem to want specific wind speeds.

Hmm I shall

There is something here (http://v2.1.kiteclique.com/wordpress-3.0/wordpress/liteflite-radial-retrospective).

BTW I thoroughly recommend anyone and everyone taking up the lines of someone else's SL7 if offered the opportunity. I just can't fathom why anyone would want to own one.

Mike.

not a sport kite, but my flying wings laima doesn't fly or glide worth a crap. it's a totally useless piece of junk. it fails at even making a good paper weight. the wait was long for it to arrive, and the kite was a complete disappointment.

in our las vegas group, for gliders we have the iflite, wala, laima, bird-x, chiroptera, skate, manta, and the long way home. the laima stands alone in how bad it is. maybe i got a dud, but it makes me angry. if it flew as a single liner to paste to the sky i'd be happy but it won't stay aloft on its own for five minutes. grrrrrrr.

I think you might of got a dud......I like ours for tight spaces in the front yard........equates indoor too..........In higher winds it doesn't paste real well, though.......probably how you tune it..
