Title: Dragon getting eaten !!!!
Post by: stringfly on May 09, 2012, 06:22 AM
Got out my Dragon kite to fly this weekend at a festival and was afraid this might happen. Both head and body were in boxes but all the disc outrigger feathers were just about eaten away.  Pictures are before storage.  I can replace the feathers (38 discs) but would something be better without loseing a traditional look.  What might be a different/better outrigger treatment ???  Thanks for any suggestions.

It seems like the traditional outriggers have feathers, but alternatives such as triangular flag's or multiple streamers have been seen.  These alternatives produce drag and look more like 'legs' (like a centipede).

Read up a bit on feather preservation and the best for them is to keep in a freezer!.. yea that's practical....wife gonna love that.  Or freeze and thaw three times then store in cedar or a box with moth flakes...(not balls or crystals).
May have to go for some ripstop tassels or small flags for balancing but will have to do it 76 times. :'(

I can confirm this cycle of freezing/thawing-- used to do that when I bought wool fleeces from Mexico and a couple of other places. Best is to freeze at one week intervals, as it has the best chance of killing eggs/larvae/adults. Good luck with that!

Beautiful kite, by the way!!

Thief,   Do you remember what he used on the outriggers? Ripstop tassels or something ?

Nancy,  thanks, If I go with feathers will try it.  May have to find a feather duster or hobby feathers.

IF you have to buy feathers sere's some options i get from joann's fabrics.  They even have dies for cuttting fabric feathers.  http://www.joann.com/search/_feathers/?page=1 (http://www.joann.com/search/_feathers/?page=1)  (not a kite link so its safe :P)
