Title: whats your Go To kite...
Post by: kepople on May 15, 2012, 02:13 PM
So many choices, and different situations based on location, so I thought I would pose a ? to try to get a consensus of peoples kite preferences.

Please answer three questions in your reply if you dont mind:
1) What is your Go to kite (kite family if you fly the same kite in UL/STD/VTD conditions)
2) do you live near the water/clean air, or do you live inland with inconsistant winds.
3) How long have you been flying

If you feel like it:
What style of flying do you do most?

my answers:
1) dont know which is my go to yet, but I enjoy my Talon, Sevens, and Silver foxes
2) I live in the city with choppy, gusty, inconsistant winds
3) working on year #2

I rotate the "A Bagô" stock quite often.

Always in the bag though:

  Benson Inner Space
  Mojo UL
  C21 Extreme Prototype
  Katana Vented Prototype

Often in the bag:

  Opium Collector (thank you RandyG)
  JoE Trident UL
  Quantum Pro std

GoTo kites in the A-Bag:

Widow Maker std, UL
Solus std, ul
Ocius Std, Ul, SUL
Vented Rev
Focus Manta

All other kites in my bag are very jealous of those listed above.

I fly inland - Las Vegas NV, semi gusty - strong winds in the spring, mild winds in the summer, light  to no winds in the winter.

Widowmaker Std

Inland - with some of the worst winds

30+ years

Other kites always in the A bags - The second Widowmaker Std, Exile w/Nitro's, Muse w/Nitro's, Mamba SUL & Std, Freestylist UL & Std, TTUL, 61/49, Wala, Ty Billings Rok, Goodwinds Asteroid, 13' homebuilt UL Delta, Premier Heart Delta, Quantum, Rev II, Gomberg Chevron (modified to fly), a Flowtail or two, an Extreme Rok, a couple Premier Roks, a small Brassington design, a Flexifoil or two, ... I know "Big A Bag", we both have one. The new Prism Switch and Zero G will both find homes there for now as we get acquainted, possibly replacing the G Chevron and the Wala.

1. Widowmaker STD and UL and for SUL a Kitehouse Sissy
The UL is my most flown kite by far

2. Clean ocean air, I live at the beach

3. I have been flying for just about 3 years now

1) fearless for soulful flying / tricking, transformer for pushing tricks to the max or trick competition.  I also love the NFX when the wind is up.  If I could only have one kite to fly for the rest of the year, I'd pick the Transformer SUL.

2) inland-ish.  We have lots of water around here, but unless you are at the beach, it's mostly badly inconsistent.  But, at it's best, it can be very very good.

3) 4 years now I think.

Flying for such a long time, I find I have 3 "A" bags, a standard/light, a SUL, and a quad. In my standard "A" bag:

Betancourt: moXie, Warrior, Centurion, Stilletto (sp?) and occasionally Bad Boy
Sano SS and SSL (SSZ in the SUL bag)
Fizz Reflex
Frenezy
Cesium

I also tend to rotate stock, but usually I just take the 3 sportkite bags if I go out.

My A bag comfortably holds five.  Currently:  DS UL/STD, Seven UL/STD, Fearless Light

Live close enough to the ocean (or Cape, as it were) to only be a T ride away.  Best winds are on the causeway to Nahant, for my money, but I hate flying on sand.  Some nice grass fields near the water, though.  Much better than what I was flying with in CT.

Flying for 15 years - started duals then mixed in quads for a bit.  Back to dualies and my trick skill level in no way reflects the amount of time I've spent staring up at them.

I go back and forth on style.  Sometimes I spend 10-15 minutes trying tricks and then spend the next 10-15 stalled at the edge of the window thinking about nothing.

My "A" bag is currently a double ski bag (purchase off season, you get a heck of a deal....) which holds about 40 kites.    I am strictly old school, with the exception of my Sea Devil.  I live in an inland area of generally higher than average winds so my choices are classic pullers that give me some feedback.  When the winds are low, I will generally go for my North Shore Radical, or Jabberwocky.  If the winds get higher, I will pull out the Mastrale, a Lite Flite Heavy, or the secret weapon...... A Bob Child's Wizard. I also have a North Shore VIP Vented and many many other choices.  I don't get bored.  Each kite has a niche and I enjoy them all.

Happy Winds,

Magpiesfooty

My bag is similar.  Old school! Love my spin offs, and if the wind permits Hawaiians, light winds my passion or tramontana. I love NSR's as well.

Solus UL seems to be my go-to, especially for the winds. Widowmaker UL at a close second.
I live in the mid west, in chicago this summer. Either super low winds, or high. Depending on location, winds are either pretty smooth (places like north ave beach or notherly island) or awful if I'm flying somewhere that is like a local park covered in trees on short lines.

My goto kites are my solus std/ul but I have my Gemini, eclipse, elixir and zephyr for a change if I feel like it.  IF I need a change from tricking I grab a stack

I fly inland and am lucky to have a good place to fly with decent wind most of the time but it does get frustrating so I have to have a variety in the bag to keep it a good flying day.

I've been flying off and on since about '82 so its been a long time.

Ocean - Mamba Std

My 3PT framed Midi has seen the most air time for several years. I usually have a top five that are always in play, but that Midi is awesome.

I mostly fly in good or better light wind (coming off the Bay or the ocean)

Been at it for near 14 years.

Well Denny, if you have to ask.  You might want to take up fishing.   It is not about the most kites, but some starting talking about their A bags.  Flying for over twenty years will lead to a large collection of kites generally.

Happy winds.

Magpiesfooty.

My goto is probably my Deep Space. I also keep my Nirvana UL with me because it's got a nice range and can still trick in lower wind. The Rev 1 vented is my high wind kite. (I love my Widowmaker but it's almost too easy to fly. Go figure.)

I've been flying since '97 but for years it was only a Prism Flashlight and Ion and I never really learned much. Dennis Smith taught me how to do a half axel and got me started with tricking.

Wind condition: okay conditions at mostly a nearby community activity field where they have soccer, football and baseball. When the forecast is 8 mph from SW or SE I try to make to Liberty State Park when the wind is off the ocean through the Verazzano Narrows. That won't last long because my company us re-locating us north of Albany to Saratoga county in July.

1. Rev family and slks
2. mostly inland inconsistent winds, beaches when possible
3. too close to 30 yrs to worry about a year or two plus or minus

1) 50/50 Thornback or Exile
2) Inland with inconsistant winds.
3) Stunt kites, since 1995.

Very interesting so far...
Not as many people say thier "Goto" kite is one of the well known high $$ Euros. No TNT's, K2's, and only a couple Nirvanas, talons and DS. Lots have them in thier bags obviously. Lots of Skyburner fans out there as expected, but would have thought with all the hype, people would put thier Nirvanas up first.
Lets hear more opinions and gotos...

Depends on the wind/location

My go to stacks (http://www.kiteking.freehostingcloud.com/inventory2.html)
I live 100ft above the ocean  (http://www.kiteking.freehostingcloud.com/beach.html)
flying since 1978

1) Talons. UL/STD
2) Inland wind, close to mountains - ever variable. (but moving to the west coast in 4 weeks! woot)
3) dual liners since summer '10.
Style - modern trickin with a healthy side order of the basics. - glued-to-the-sky snaps stalls, monster tip stabs at full speed from the top of the window, wow me more than most modern tricks.

The TNT, in one form or another, has been my go to kite for almost 2 years now.
Most all my flying is in shifting, pulsating, Inland winds.
I've been flying dual line kites for about 4 1/2 years.

Fearless, Blue Moon and Aerostar.  Local winds can be atrocious so the Fearlae stay in the 'A' Bag, always.

Two hour drive to the beach so we usually take four bags which include  Talon UL, TrickTail vented and an assortment of SLKs.

Been flying for about ten years, now.

Mini-Machine?
No secret, a number of people have seen it.  A one-off that I threw together during the TricksParty USA days, with a mind towards a Machine that would be happier with yofades, crazy copters and the like, and a smaller template to cut down on the infamous Machine "traction" effect.  It turned out around 7' so not "small", but smaller than the normal Machine sailplan.

Ugly sucker, just used some yellow and black Iccy that I had lying around, though not quite as ugly as the Fisher Price/Wonder Bread Machine  ;)

Best looking color combo IMO is still the one in my forum pic - "Goth"

(sheepishly) I don't have a go to kite, except my quantum. The eyes are bigger than the wallet right now, but sometime I'll have enough to have a go to kite. Gotta start somewhere.

I have a nice big park right at the edge of Aurora, IL airport. Inland, but enough open corn fields that it is as smooth a wind as you're gonna get out here.

I've only been flying for a few months.

I'm trying to absorb as much information from everyone's posts as I can. It's like being in the library of congress, but having to stay in the kids section right now.

Silly question to modify the post, Why do you like flying kites? Me, I love being outside all the time and that it is me and nature. No electricity.

I still maintain the Quantum is one of the best values for an entry level kite, nothing wrong with that. In fact the Quantum is still Rhonda's "Go To" kite when there's enough wind, the first "Full Size" kite she bought for herself. She has both Mamba's and the second Widowmaker in her bag plus all mine so it's not like she doesn't have other choices. And you know I still enjoy giving it a fly too.

Windfactory's peerless Androgyn. I continue to reach past other great kites to get to mine.

2) do you live near the water/clean air, or do you live inland with inconsistant winds.
As a great sage* once wrote:-
There is no such thing as wind in Finland.
It is variable intensity, semi-directional turbulence.

1 - Comp and Trick Style - CTC's
Freestyle -Talons (with the occasional DS or Trident or A.N. other as the mood takes (Damn, why did I sell that Androgyn? ) ;-) )
2 - Ocean now... inland prior to last summer
3 - '98 ish I guess, a few years after with any degree of purpose. 90% dual line, with the odd bit of quad and traction for good measure.

I have had two Androgyni.  I have zero now.

Not sure how I feel about that.  The weaker flyer in me back then did not jive with them, except they did teach me the backspin cascade.  Gosh is that easy on that kite.

Sorry...for now, still XTs.  But I do remember really liking Carlo's Vendetta...and I have one that is still unflown since arriving!?

Mike, is that a bag or a trailer?

Ok, to help Mike out here he was listing my A bag as well. But, really depends on if you are talking A bag sports or single lines. We each have our own A bag for sport kites and the we have our A bag for single lines. Cuz, you see you just never know what the winds are going to do here. So, have to have lots of choices. Most days the winds are low and changing directions every few minutes. But, the Switch is my new favorite kite. I just love it everyone needs a Switch in their A bag!!!!!

Quantum is an awesome kite. Like Mike said I have multiple other kites to fly and most days I still fly the Quantum. It does a great job pulling a tail.

As for why I like flying kites it is a great stress reducer. I love being outside and spending time with good friends and family.

Gray, of the NSE's which has a trickier feel, the STD or the UL?

Title: Re: whats your Go To kite...
Post by: gray on May 24, 2012, 09:32 AM
Itís just my opinion, but with a stock setup the tricks feel very similar in the center of their respective ranges. If the upper spreader is shortened on both, the STD is the trickier of the two.

Title: Re: whats your Go To kite...
Post by: Dolphinboy on May 24, 2012, 10:37 PM
If there is enough wind then a Transformer Vent, Mohawk XS or Fearless Vented Light. Less wind then a Mohawk XS UL or Transformer SUL

Inland / mountain with every direction wind.

Started dual line flying in (aprox) 1986 to about 1993ish. Took a long break and started up again in 2007.

New kites and tricks are better than old kites and corners.

As for the NSE I reckon 0.5-1cm off the top spreader or just move it down if you want to try it out. P3x/P2x LE and Nitro LS works a treat. 22gr plus on the tail over the stock 18 gr weight makes it wrap better too. I have tried a lot of different set ups on this and the bridle and it took a lot of testing to get it spot on. I prefer the std to the ul but frame needs to be right. 8)
