Title: How to post pictures?
Post by: mikeb on June 26, 2012, 07:44 PM
I've tried to post pictures but the limit is 100kb per picture and my smallest is 150kb, how do I show pictures?

Most of us use flikr, picasa or some other site to host them and just copy/paste the forum cod those sites generate into the post.  Much easier than trying to size right for the forum and the linked picks don't get deleted after a few months like attachments do.

Here are the details from skb:
You will need to have the pictures posted up on a site like Picasa/google+/photobucket/flickr (I am not a fan of webshots at all and do not recommend it).

I'm Old Skool- right click/copy the Thumbnail Image URL, paste it inside the Full-sized Image's URL.

Like this: [url=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v390/skb/wsikf-snowflake-1.jpg][img]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v390/skb/th_wsikf-snowflake-1.jpg[/img][/url]

It took some trickery to prevent the Forum's software from rendering the image, but I wanted to show you exactly what I typed.

Trickery removed you get this:
([url]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v390/skb/th_wsikf-snowflake-1.jpg[/url]) ([url]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v390/skb/wsikf-snowflake-1.jpg[/url])
^clickable thumbnail™

Remember, Preview is your friend!

I typed this all by hand too, Tags, I don't need no steekin' tags!

I have photobucket but I don't understand (just copy/paste the forum cod those sites generate into the post.)
I don't know what webshots are. And I don't see anything in photobucket that starts with http://and at the end type in[/img] (http://so is this something I need to type in and type in [img)

Mike: what is the photobucket folder?
I right click on the picture itself and choose "copy image URL" from the menu that pops up.
Then i paste that url in between the img tags in the thread.

Here is the process I just used to create this post:
1) I prefer Picasa for photo management on my local computer. I used its Export function to resize an image suitable for web posting (e.g., < 100 KB).
2) Uploaded that smaller image to my Dropbox Public folder (2GB Free)
2) Right-clicked the file on Dropbox to get the public link (chose the Tiny URL)
3) Clicked the image icon above to get the HTML and pasted the link between the IMG commands
4) Inserted the actual Dropbox link below the image so that you can see what it looks like.

I had previously been uploading attachments to the Forum; but, as Ca Ike points out, this is a better method:
  • It uses less server space
  • The images won't be deleted after several months
  • No limit to the number of pictures within a single post (attachments <= 3)

I too use Picasaweb... but have always just right clicked on the image and selected "copy image address" and pasted it between the img][/img brackets... works like a charm when I keep my picasa albums on a seperate tab.

No matter what folder I look at pictures in my photobucket none of my pictures have a dropdown that says "copy image url" mine say,
Email & IM
Direct link
HTML code
IMG code

And I don't see any img tags to put them in between in the thread/post reply anywhere.

I don't use photobucket, but I'm pretty sure "IMG code" is exactly what you're looking for. If it is, it should give you the img tags, too, but you can find them directly under the "bold" button when typing up a post.

@MikeB:

When you are creating a post, you should see a line of smileys above the text window. Immediately above that row are 5 icons. The leftmost icon is for inserting images, next to it is for hyperlinks.

Click on the image icon and it will add some HTML like this in your text window: {IMG}{/IMG} (Note that I used ellipses instead of brackets). Once you have the weblink to your picture (see below), paste it between the tags. The first command {IMG} turns the feature ON and the second one {/IMG} turns it OFF.

Now, concerning the weblink to your image(s), it looks like "Direct Link" will do the job from Photobucket. Try it and see if it works. If not, post your results and we'll keep trying to help.

Ken

P.S. Your Photobucket folder must have permission for GWTW to access it. In other words, it must be publicly accessible (shared) and not protected.

i do not bother resizing since i am hosting the picture somewhere else....
Here are some screen shots of how i do this:
upload the picture into Picasa online folders via picasa software....you can do this with any of the pictures hosting sites...

Right click on the image itself.....this is what i see....i then choose the "Copy Image URL" option.

Come to the forum and hit the "Reply" button....you come to this exact place.

The red arrow is pointing to the "insert image" tags.

That will then pop in the [img][/img] tags that you need.

Then your CURSOR actually appears between the tags.....hit paste and the image's direct url should appear.

Now.....click the PREVIEW button to see if it worked....

Excellent explanation. I was about to make a set of images to illustrate, but yours does the job nicely!

Concerning image re-sizing, when pics are downloaded from a camera (e.g., raw), they can often be upwards of 20MB each depending on resolution! When you upload pics from Picasa (computer app) to PicasaWeb (now Google+ Photos), it automatically reduces the image size suitable for web posting. For example, I just checked one pic that was 6.5MB when imported from my Canon PowerShot. After uploading to Google+ Photos, it was reduced to 66KB.

Thanks Ken!

Yep, since Picasa does not 'charge' you for the smaller sized pictures i just upload in the medium size and leave it at that.   works great....and i have a LOT of albums full of pictures and still am not near the max!

I was tinkering with Picasa yesterday trying to do a linked clickable photo like John C. always does.  Even used their provided "Link to this Photo" shortcuts but it would just not work here on the forum, it just kept showing the text when I did a preview.  Not sure if it's something with Picasa or since it's a free account.  Flickr works fine using BBCode, but I didn't notice any BBCode link info on Picasa.

Mike: I also only have a free account...but I noticed that something had gone weird with their provided url link...so i stopped using it.....

To do what you want to do is to put the IMAGE tags&Url inside the Link URL.
[url=http://goo.gl/mM7eV][img]http://goo.gl/JOmjI[/img][/url]

so the first URL put in is the webpage itself and then the image's url is second.

and that should give you: a clickable picture to the following page
(http://goo.gl/JOmjI) (http://goo.gl/mM7eV)

URLs for this example were shortened to make them able to fit on one line....YMMV!

@skb: i am not certain how long it took you to figure out that tweak but darn it works well!

Earlier today I added another Rev Twisted to my photobucket and changed the title of the first one, I see here says it's been moved or deleted, I thought it may say that because I changed the title, so I changed the title of the Rev Nagel Girls but that picture is still here even though I changed that title too. Why is that I wonder?

Nevermind, I just got back and I see the picture was gone, so if I change my titles in photobucket the pictures disappear from here.

Actually it was only about 100'.....the drift innovation camera I use has a super wide angle lense : 170 degrees....so it looks higher....also takes big pix but I let picasa shrink them....

I like to use Imgur.com. it seems simpler than anything else. i just click the upload button, pick as many photos as i want. Then each image has a code generator like stated before. Or you can post whole albums.

The link looks like: [IMG ]http://i.imgur.com/oTEih.jpg[/img]

and here is the real image.

just thought i would throw in my opinion.

Wanted to update this as i know that there are new users and new website changes on hosting places that make the previous directions slightly obsolete.

So....the most important thing to do when posting a picture is to use the PREVIEW button.  See if the durn thing works!

If you are using a picture that is hosted on another website, file sharing site, web folder etc...make certain that the picture is publicly available.   Most sites now have a button that will generate the code you need to link directly to it in this forum....
Often, while i use picasa/Google Photos, Flickr,Photobucket etc..., i forgo the generated URL code that the site provides and just go a simpler route.

The following could be considered stealing pictures, so I try to put in details about where i found the picture from if it is not my own!!!

In Chrome (i am not certain about other browsers, but would expect them to have this as well)
  • i right click on the picture i want to use and choose "Open Image in New Tab" That forces the browser to open up the image in a new tab with the direct URL of the image you want.
  • Then you copy what is in the address bar of the browser and insert that between the [img][/img]tags in the forum's posting box.
  • Check the output with the preview button

In Firefox:
  • i right click on the picture i want to use and choose "Page Info" That opens a pop up box with details about the page itself
  • in that list find where it says "og:image"
  • then you copy what is on that line and insert that between the [img][/img]tags in the forum's posting box.
  • Check the output with the preview button

Another vote for imgur (https://imgur.com/register).
• it's free
• it allows hot-linking
• you can post full-sized images down to tiny thumbnails with its posting options
• the URLs it creates are  compact, not ginormous walls of text and numbers
• what's not to like?
