Just would like to recommend the Best Western on the beach for next year. Hey it was pricier than HoJo's and Surf 'n Sands, but it was way classier and so convienent to the beach and town. Just walk a couple of blocks to downtown and pick your cuisine. I loved it. Oh yeah, the hot tub on the roof, under the stars, was an experience never to be forgotten. We even had a gas fireplace and a balcony in the room.

                         KITE PARTY 7.5 ????

Title: Re: KITE PARTY 8
Post by: DaveS on March 24, 2009, 08:19 PM
No Kite Party 7.5, but KP 8 is going to be awesome. We are about to have official permission to not only expand to South side of pier, but also to expand further North. David Gomberg will be there with his big single line stuff. I'm talking with Steve Hoath of the Flight Squad in the UK. I'm in weekly meetings with Steve Bone (had my 3rd meeting today), and he is very excited. His long term vision is to make this the biggest and best kiting event in the WORLD, and pictures kites flying for miles on our beaches, all keeping the KITE PARTY venue AS IS on the north side! Won't that be a trick! Stay tuned. We should a dedicated web site for KITE PARTY soon...

Sounds great so far!

Would it be possible to get the city to discount the rates for kite fliers at the RV facility there on the beach for the event?

Anybody know of a source for that tubular plastic used for the tails on the Peter Powell's and TRLBY's? I've done a couple searches with no luck so far, looks like they need some too.

I could use that resource also, upon launch of the stack one of the tails broke. I guess after 25 years they get a little brittle.

by the way this was the maiden flight for these kites, I traded some "new in the tube" Rainbow Stunt Kites

The story behind the launch: I started with 6 to test the pull, after catching a tail the last kite started spinning

We attached the second set of six, but the last kite did not pass the pre-flight check, hence having only 11 in the sky

The pull was heavy, but the tough part was turning, I had one arm fully extend and the other all the way back and they would slowly change direction.

I was surprised that the ground passes didn't result in a nose dives

all in all it was a great flight and now I can reach all those items off the top shelf

Oh yes, came early to KP7 and stayed late ... looks like that's the way 2010 will also be planned.  What a blast putting faces and given names to screen names.  Got to see some really great kites ... SLK, dualies and REVs.  Flew my first dualie ... thanks again Mike.  Oh, and almost wore out my SUL by flying for six straight days on the beach ... a little tape and it might be okay for next year ... maybe.

Dave, thanks again for KP7 and please count me in for KP8!!

Cheers,
Tom

All is still on track. I'm waiting to hear back from the owner of the new hotel across the street about special room rates for us. The guy called me a few weeks ago and wants to be a part of it. The plan is to still be on BOTH sides of the pier, and the city is still willing to throw some money into this one to help with the costs. Much needed this time, since as you may or may not know, my shop (trailer!) was taken off the pier in September and I've been working out a 20' shipping container. I'll be resuming my meetings with the president of the Conference and Visitor's bureau in the next couple weeks, so stay tuned. KP 8 is the weekend of March 13th. Thank you.
Dave

Hey Gang,
First things first, the Shorebreak is offering a Kite Party Rate of $139.00 night for either single or double occupancy. He has 5 rooms held at the moment, but there are 157 or so rooms in the place, so I'm sure we can get more if need be. He was supposed to give me a code or something to use, but he didn't include that in the agreement. I'll have a link soon I hope. The HoJo's will probably be the same old $79.99/89.99 night. The Shorebreak is across the street, so no car or parking is expense is needed. The building is due for it's final this week or next. They is a POWER issue at the moment (cables stuck in conduit INSIDE the pier). They can't pull the old power cables out or get new one's run. They're working on it. I'm hoping to get a temporary C of O this week (Certificate of Occupancy). I have pics on my camera, but haven't them edited them yet. I wouldn't say there is LOTS of glass, but there is a lot in front. 12.5' ceilings to boot and about 600 plus sq.ft. Should be very cool. Plan on making walking into the place a visual orgasm. Will update more KP stuff ASAP, sorry the new building sitch is taking a bit of my time.

Yeah I was gonna say, HoJo's maybe 2 miles as the crow flies, but it's about a ten minute drive, since the timing of our lights in HB is pathetic. So the 139.00 is an excellent rate. I would like to ask a favor of all of you. I will create a new post regarding ONLY the Shorebreak so I can see how many rooms I need to try and hold at the discounted rate. Thanks!

Dave I understand that this year will be an expanded version of Kite Party.  There will be additional flying areas to the south of the pier and to the north in front of the condos.  Perhaps you could share your vision of what and where.  For example do you see the big show kites to the north and the SLK “art” kites south of the pier or  …. ?  If you have described it elsewhere I apologize and would ask that you please direct me there.

Title: Re: KITE PARTY 8
Post by: DaveS on January 18, 2010, 10:24 PM
If I had a vision for you, I'd be happy to share it, but I don't. I don't know just how expanded it's going to be yet. I had to provide a rough map of fields to the city, but I only numbered fields. In addition, the budget is lower than I hoped (afraid working out a glorified dumpster for going on 4 months now has taken a bit of a toll), and I don't know how many volleyball poles I can afford to have pulled at $30.00 a pop, since at the moment there are about 50 of them in my way! I should get word this week if the city has any money to throw at the event. There was talk that there would be a few months ago, however the recent talk took a different turn (away from the bank!). I'm really sorry for all the uncertainty this year, but at this time, I don't even know if I'll be open for Kite Party. There is a design issue with the new building, and we're getting a lot of water coming in. We can't get the "final" construction signed off (and then a Cert. of Occ) until the issue is resolved. Still weeks away  :(    Sorry....
D

HEY, THE GOOD NEW!!! I'm at the Kite Trade Show this week, want updates?!!!!!!!!!!

Title: Re: KITE PARTY 8
Post by: kitelover on January 19, 2010, 05:26 AM
Hang in there Dave, have some fun at KTAI. Just had a thought, how about using the volleyball courts for smaller SLK's and/or public flying? The poles could be anchors if you kept the lifters and pullers out. That would be Brian.  ;) Good luck with the issues, hope to see you soon.

Do I get to pick the post?  Put my name on it?  Paint it?  Keep it?  Pull it out with the Jeep?  Move it South?

If Dave is good with all this, we'll need some payment info. ;)

I'm touched by your generous offers, but let me see what I can work out first. I'd much rather you spend your money on more meaningful things. Thank you though.

It was suggested that I register on this forum my intention to be there for the Kite party. I am offically doing that now, Kevin bayless and Tad Wakeman of Wakeless kites will be there Friday , Sat and Sun. Really looking forward to it.
In reading some of the post it also appears that others are listing the type of kites they fly, well yes i fly and make all sorts. Quads, Dual Stacks, Giant Para foils, Line luandry. Bringing it all for this event,(Per Dave)

Looking forward to seeing some ols friends and meet some new ones.
