Title: Kite Addiction
Post by: Wayner on July 27, 2012, 03:49 PM
Today FedEx delivered a Deep Space purchased from the swap meet.  ;D

When putting the kite away I found a full closet.  ::)

A quick count totaled 17 kites, 2 kite bags, & trunk full of accessories purchased over the last 11 months. ???

When did my kite addiction start?    :o

Four SUL: Pro wren, Amazing, Air-zero, & Alan Brooks AB+
Six ULís: Mojo UL, Shadow, Zephyr, WM UL & STD, Mongoose UL & STD, Freestylist UL with STD ordered
Other Standards: JJF, Infinity, & Deep Space
And two vented kites: Mantis V2 & Silver Fox Vented

Is there a cure?

A support group?

To prove you're not addicted, give all your kites to me.

I will hold them while you take a few years to cure yourself.

It's a sacrifice I am willing to make.  :)

My wife came into my den today and looked at my pile of kites. She asked if I had gotten more. "I don't know what you mean, honey?"

If I haven't admitted it yet, does that mean I'm not addicted?

I understand John is willing to collaborate in your recovering, but he is too close to you, same town, that's no good, you need to send your kites to someone far away, much more far away, like in the other hemisphere...., someone like...., me for example?  ;)

Ouch that hurts.  :(

My single line collection has been growing for 20+ years and takes up part of the garage and a lot of my wifes patience.  :D  :D  :D

To other forum members, John is one of the local flyers feeding my addiction.

He keep showing up with another kite to fly. My only saving grace is his collection include many kites no longer made which limits me in finding some kites.

Example. John holds the line of his Mojo UL and say Wayne, come fly this!  ??? After a 10 minute flight I was first in line for Blue Moon limited run on Mojo UL.

Giving John my kites will only encourge him to let me try other kites in his sable.

Hum... My kites taking an extended vacation in a exotic country in the southern hemisphere.
They should come back with some new moves, rhythm and maybe even a latin flair. Sounds intriguing.

How many do I have is a question I often get asked. My answer is I'm not sure I haven't counted.
Denial is a wonderful state.
Do you count stacks as more then one kite?
Plus you can't keep them in the same place so that they can't be counted.
Plus I dont have an addiction,i left kites at home when I came to the beach on vacation

Uh Huh  :(

Why count?  It's depressing.....just choose 25 and go to the beach.......if you break one just take out another.

It's NOT an addiction.....Nope, NO WAY :-\

I like your line of thinking!  Pass me an upper spreader and a winder, would ya?   :)

I've spent far more on things I could care less about - my kites are like family.   That's it!  Of course it takes a village!  :)

PS

I think we should start a Facebook group or perhaps a band called 'The Enablers'.

This from a guy that has a trailer to haul his kites around.  :-\

There is hope.  I am now down to maybe ten from a high of sixty plus.  The bad thing is that the bicycles that replaced them are harder to hide from the wife than the kites. ::)

No matter how bad you have it, there is always someone with a worse case:

That is awesome and BTW if you count them, you're not an addict. The proper number is "not enough".

Thanks guys, I really am feeling much better.  :).

What is a number really?  I mean, in the grand wonder of the universe, is there really any difference between, say 25 and 250.  Not really!

It's the difference between grains of sand that clung to your phone versus those on your big toe.

Now, hit the swap - lots of good deals in there!

Well, in two months i've acquired 4.  I am still wrestling with the fact that i went from being a geahead to a kite junkie in something like a WEEK!   But i rationalize it that i needed a beginer kite,  one for the wife, a very low wind kite and a trick kite.    If i can rationalize any furter, i am in trouble!    Oh,   but i have my rev all picked out for my birthday :-)

Reddobbie set up three Blue Moon Monnie kites

Gamelord brought a R-Sky Krystal for the first time

Flew Fidelio;s Talon UL for the first time. WOW  ???

Spend last night have all those kites filling my dreams.   Thanks Guys, what are friends for  :-*

Like any other hobby - its always easier to buy than sell. Some kites are collectibles like the Prism Vapor. I keep a Gemini which is a signature kite from well-known pilots I met at events. There is something in business called 6-S. One of the rules is that if you do not use a piece of machinery in a year consider selling it or disposing of it. Obviously not the disposing part for a kite. The kite you see in my profile is obviously from a very well celebrated SLK maker from Canada. Its never been flown and I keep as wall art in my beach house. But if a kite is not wall art, a collectible of some sort or you have not flown it once in a year ... sell it ... someone else probably has a better plan for it ...  8) 8) 8). Just my opinion ...

My addiction continues, no new kites but daliy fight time.  :)
Even got to know the park groundskeepers on a first name bases. They change the watering and grass cutting schedule to give me flying space   8)

Las Vegas has high heat warnings today. My addicition said no problem.   ;)

Was at the park at 8:30 (when the wind came up) to noon when I ran out of water. Wind was low, fly the WM UL and Amazing SUL. Did a fair amount to moving. But had good success.

Drank about 3 quarts of water at the park. I drank a full gallon including the water after getting home. ???  But I feel good. Except for washing 7 water bottles.  :(

Kipling said their was nothing out in the noon day sun but mad dogs and English men. Guess you could add "and one kite flyer"

I will take it ligher tommorow, don't want to spontaneously combust.  :D  :D

i know the feeling Wayner.  90 degrees today, played tennis with the wife,  3 and 6yr old(ok PLAYED is a strong word).  then found some wind in the baseball field to fly the 4d for an hour. on the way home we stopped at my field to check wind there and it was GREAT! my wife offered to leave me there while she got shoes for the kids. i said sure and flew for another 1.5hrs with the zephyr.  went to work and got out at 2AM and as i sit here weather bug says 4mph winds and i just wish my field had LIGHTS!

Okay, since my friend Conway outted me in this thread:
http://www.gwtwforum.com/index.php?topic=8169.0 (http://www.gwtwforum.com/index.php?topic=8169.0)

I am going to fess up to what I've done. I can't decide if it feels really really bad or really excellent. I guess since I keep yelling "I LOVE THIS KITE!" at the top of my lungs while flying, I'm guessing things feel excellent.

It all began with me realizing that I was at a stalemate with my Mamba. I know it can trick because I've seen everyone but me trick it. But I've been trying to do a half-axel for nearly a year, nevermind anything else, I decided to jump on the WidowMaker bandwagon.... so I ordered one-- the cheesy (some people think) original black/red one from JonT.

In the meantime, I had a mental list of kites I've been admiring and follow any thread where they come up. Tom Patterson (tpatters) put up a Fearless Vented Light with colors I might have chosen myself. I jumped on it, but was 2nd in line. Then I was first! I bought that puppy and fell in love with it, so much so I ordered the T-shirt and prepared to take the first swallow:

So then a guy named Eddie (pudders on the forum) put up a Deep Space for sale. Oy.... the DS was the very first kite I fell in love with but didn't buy because at the time I hadn't read much about them. The price was good, so I jumped on this as well. This is the kite I do my yelling with. Within five minutes I knew I'd found *my* kite after the first half-axel. This is the kite that will teach me enough to do tricks on my Mamba and other kites. It's so danged agile, it's unbelievable. I love this kite! So much so I ordered an UL from Tim. It's now en-route to the States.

So then a guy named Gerald (Kabel on the forum) put up two black/white Deep Space kites up for sale. Oh man.... sold to me. They are en-route from Germany.

The WidowMaker arrived last week. Oh man, I love this kite too-- it's exactly what everyone says it is and maybe more so. The cool way it ducks its little head to do a half axel is amazing!

So now I will have all these kites, an embarrassment of riches at this point and not something I will be able to continue to do. Now I just pray for time and decent winds ..... and for the little soccer darlings to go away.

Nancy

Yeah. Great.  :-X

Seriously, it is fun to have all these options, but it's so darned easy to begin to believe that the next kite is going to be the one that will perform a bunch of tricks-- that the last ones were just crummy kites. I've never fallen for the crummy part, but I have to be really careful not to fall in with that other part. I'm just now to the point where I can feel and actually see some of the differences and it helps a lot. Now it's just a matter of putting a ton of hours into them on the field. I am very happy with what is in my bag now (and hopefully by the end of the week!). If I never bought another kite ::cough:: they would be enough.

Nancy
