I have fond memories of my old kites, recollections of how accurate they flew, the pull, the noise. There was a mid point when tricking was becoming the fad where many of the kites I flew were not real accurate flyers because materials hadn't caught up yet, at least in my price range. That reinforced the nostalgia for those old slow, loud, accurate kites. Then sometime quality carbon spars and fabrics found their way into the mid price range. That nostalgia was still there though.  But pulling those old kites out was a humbling lesson, today's kites are so far advanced from yesterday's. Sure I've lost the touch those old ones needed but they just don't fill the need today. Only the Flexifoils are what I recall and they really don't have a modern equivalent.

In short mine are on an extended vacation, well earned in many cases.

The only one I still fly from the 90's is my Rev 1.5 SLE.  Might be fun to get the Prism Vector back in flying condition, but other than that, not much.

I'll bust out the old school kites once in awhile, nostalgia you know..

of course there's the Flexifoils - anything from the Hotshots to the crazy Hyper 16, NSR, my Laser stack is pretty old school (mid 90s at least), Prophecies (were these pre-2000?  My memory is shot), Vapor, Chicago Fire Bee, Darts of various types, Rev II, Whangdoodle, Jordan Pro, Spyro Jet, Dynakites..

wow, more than I thought.. some of these might be borderline pre-2000, but I tried. ;)  Dang, I must be gettin' old.  :D

I still have all my pre-2000 kite. Have them in a prism roll up bag. most other bags are to short :(

I bring the bag out when the wind picks up.
Theres nothing like the roar of an NSR on a windy day!
+ 1

Fly all my TOTL kites , NSR, Spinoff, NSR Extreme and reframed the Hawaiian with skysharks. Still love my Skyburner TNT Competition and Flying Winds UFO.

The Whangdoodle is trickier than one would think:

I replaced all the fittings on my UFO SUL (thanks, Allen!) and used TAPAs on the leading edges.

Pretty kite. How does the SUL compare to the std (Actually it is a UL)

With a name like Whangdoodle how could it not be tricky?  :D

I usually have 1 or 2 late 90s kites in my main bag, usually SUL or UL - older low AR kites seem to be in their element in low winds  8)

I own very few kites designed after 2000. Fly even fewer. The Mamba straddles old and new better then most.

I like the way older kites fly. I don't care if they cant backspin or roll up as easy as newer designs. Flight characteristics are way more important to me.

I've owned and flown a lot of modern kites, but i tend to get bored with them.

It's my girlfriend who flies my old kites !!! (in particular the Illusion and the Eclipse) and once in a while I fly some of them, but I prefer flying my recent kites to make new tricks, to have fun and new feels.
Last week, I've repaired my Utopia (see this thread (http://www.gwtwforum.com/index.php?topic=8040.0)) and I'll fly it next weekend (it is raining today in Paris !!!).

That eclipse is still a pretty tricky kite, though!

I fly my Tika, Skyburner I, Firebirds, and Tramontana 2000 a lot. Still enjoy the NikNak and the PDSUL a lot as well.  :)

My parents used to be really into kites, when their home field was Sandy Beach, in Hawaii. They kept most of their old kites. They were really big into TOTL stuff. Full size, and 3/4 Hawaiian's, as well as Spin Off's.  It's nothing but fun anytime one of those bags gets opened. I always make sure to carry a Spin Off with me. You never know when mother nature wants to laugh at the new kites with all her wind speed. That's when you have to break out a "Roarer's." :P

Wow, you mean they still make kites after 2000! I own about a dozen and only two were made after the millennium. Love those old sails.

+1 on the NSR roar!

The NSR was my third kite, back in 94. It got so stretched from flying (plus a couple of repairs) that I got another one in 2001, so the first one could sleep. So every time I got out flying, almost sure there was a NSR in the air. Last year I got both together as a stack, so no more sleeping for either one. And recently I got a third one. Now none will be sleeping any time soon!!!

Did some old school flying last week. Winds were a stiff 18-20 a good part of the time. Had my TOTL Spinoff up on 150' lines. Flew a Prism Fanatic and a 'new' E3, as well.

I still have my very first dual line kite I bought back in early 90's?

It's a Spectra Sport Kite. I really enjoy how loud it gets zipping through the sky. A real head turner just due to the noise.  :D

I love my 90's kites still, they are awesome!

Anyone know if you can get any brand new kites that are similar to those in the 90's?
Failing that I will have to keep trying to make my own - I continue to fail to make one that matches the original though :S
