Title: Mamba wingtip tension
Post by: coop on August 18, 2012, 08:47 AM
Hey guys, I just received some mambas, and as these are my most modern kite I am not familiar with the how to tension the wingtips. No bungee, just a string. Any pics or vids of how to do this?

Place the loop into the nock.
Pull the other end with the knot and place the knot into the nock.
You are tensioned.
Done!

Very well explained!
Assuming the mamba is like my mojo, i was a bit confused at first too.
What boomer wrote is exactly all you need to do.
Very easy, once you figure it out.
You pass the knot over the nock to keep it locked tight.

That's not a Blue Moon tensioning system.
Were they a comp set?
Try this:

It's the Prism method. Your picture looks like the previous owner changed the system.

Yes its a comp set. From sul to vented. All five have this set up. How tight do you need to tension then?

How tight is relative to wind, skill, sail condition, etc.
Try varying amounts of tension and make sure you are about equal on both wings.
See what works - experiment.
But start with what was stated in the Prism PDF.
Pull the sail tight enough to eliminate all wrinkles along the leading edge.

Oh I don't know about that-- that stuff is like fine wine. You have to adjust it, then test it, then adjust, test. Sometimes it can take as much as five years.

You could replace the tensioners with new line and go back to the Blue Moon style.

Lol!
I may put the vented up for sale, possibly the high wind version. We just don't get that type of wind around here. But I may just keep em to say I have em. Lol!

Btw, the vented and high wind both have 3 point leading edge bridles, is that stock or a mod?

This is what I will most likely do.

As others have suggested, I would switch back to ken's style. It may take some time to get the tension set right, but once you have it the way you want it you can always get the same setting without future adjustments (or very little adjustment).

I have switched most of my prism kites over to the BMK style for that reason... Easy repeatability.

That strikes me as funny. It was the Prism style before it was the BMK style. Prism gave it up cause it was too difficult. That's about the time they started with the sewn in place O ring bungies.  Go figure.

The third bridle leg was added to high wind kites by Ken, or was a recommended mod. Helps a lot.
