Title: Prism Zephyr or HQ Shadow for my first low wind kite.
Post by: KennyB on September 17, 2012, 08:22 PM
I was flying a guys Shadow over the weekend and i really liked it. He was kind enough to let me fly it after i was unsuccessful in getting my heavy old school flying wings kite in the air. Now im wondering which of these two i shoud buy.

Easy question The Shadow. Its can approach SUL performance.

The Zephyr is a light standard.

If you want to look at a full size UL to compare to the Shadow in the same price range. I would recommend the Freestylist UL.  Good control, feedback and trickability.

The shadow is a more advanced trick kite. But harder for a beginner to get on top of. IMO

Shadow was my first UL. Freestylist would have been a better fit.

+1 for the Shadow. I've flown the shadow and it is fun to fly just be gentle. I have a Zephyr and it is NOT an SUL and in my opinion it's barely an ultralight. It will fly in relatively low winds but is nearly impossible (for me) to operate well under 3-4mph.
The shadow will fly well in very light wind.

+2  The shadow is a great low wind kite that will fly and trick down to a genuine 2mph ( it will probably fly a little lower in ideal winds but tricks may be more difficult). Good for most tricks, really nice 540's, the only one that is difficult is the one pop yoyo. It's also pretty tough for a (S)UL - I've had mine 3 years and only replaced one LLE.

Make that 3+ for the Shadow.

I darn near bought a Shadow and just before I did, I had a chance to buy a used Sky Burner Ocius UL from a well-respected flyer, so I bought the Ocius instead.

Thanks guys for all the replies. I knew that shadow was a good kite when i was flying it, considering im pretty new to stunt kites it flew nice in next to no wind.
Ill pick one up this week then ill need to find out about the bridle mod.

I'd go Shadow for low wind flying when comparing those 2 kites.

The Shadow is on the short list of kites that I regret having sold.

The Shadow was, for me, a breakthrough vehicle........Got my first mulilazies in near zero wind and it has helped me to  soften my hugely hard hands to a point where I think that sooner or later, (probably later) I would have a chance to fly smoooooth..............

(you know........like Tom and wellyou know,......... how many other gifted Ones)

Great choice, I'm sure you'll enjoy the Shadow.  One tip I'd pass on, the knots on the bridle can slip as the bridle is tied from unsleeved Dyneema. If you rub a little Beeswax on the knots it helps to stop them slipping. If you find the kite is a bit 'spinny' (oversteers) after you have tried it a few times you can fit a 3 point bridle that stops 90% of it. Remember it responds best to gentle inputs, guiding it into you what you want it to do.

Did you get any weights with it? There should be 2 weights, one a piece of wire inside the spine that weighs around 4 grams and another 'barrel' weight of 12 grams that fits on the end of the spine for doing pitch tricks - yoyos etc.  Some kites seem to come with both, some with one and some with none.  I've found it flies best with just the wire weight fitted.  In really low wind take this out too.

Hmmmm I dont see any weights..if i open the velcro flap i see the spine and a t type connector on the end of it.

Thank is it.

It should have a brass rod that goes into the spine.

I heard the barrel was only on the 1st version years ago. I have one but don't use it. It is very heavy for this kite. really up the wind required.

Mine is the 'new generation' Shadow with the blue tattoo just like yours and I got both weights - it seems to vary. The wire weight is under the 'T' piece - a 4" piece of wire with a small piece of 5mm carbon glued on the end. If you have it you want to put a little grease on the wire as it can stick inside the spine, if you don't have it, it would be easy to make as it is very useful.  As Wayner says, the big weight isn't really needed - it's main purpose is to make the kite do yoyo's but it messes everything else up.

I'm working on a mod for the Shadow that lets it do one pop yoyo's and better pitch moves without the need for the big weight so you can still do all the other stuff too but it just needs a little more airtime to be sure it works.  When I'm sure I'll post it.
