Title: Tekken SUL
Post by: tpatter on November 23, 2012, 08:24 PM
Lam was able to sew this one up for me on his way out of town.

I've flown it a few times now - it's seriously good.  Flys like my standard, but in much less wind and I think that the Taz is even easier on the SUL.  The kite maintains excellent precision even out on the edge of the window in low wind.   The one-pop yoyo is also still there in spades, so have no fear my friends.

Denny, it only LOOKS heavy because its black!  :)

I've briefly flown the tattoo and this one back to back in low wind.  It flys with more sail pressure and drive in the same wind, so I would guess that it goes lower, but it could be more of a difference in feel.

I have not weighed either kite, but this one, like his others, tends to just hover as you keep tricking it so you can do most everything in near nothing.  It could turn out to be my new favorite SUL.

Tom, just wondering if it has the same low range as the Fearless SUL, which is equal to the TNT Comp UL's low end, or if it can trick in the TNT Zero range of 1 to 2 Kph ?

Denny,

All of Lam's kites can do everything.

At least, that's from what I've read.  :)

The Tekken goes a bit lower I would say, but probably not as low as Zero.

By the way, I've flown both the FLSUL and TNT UL extensively and, unless something is completely out of whack, the FL flys much lower - not even close.

We flew the FLSUL and the TNT Zero side by side and the FLSUL was equal to the TNT Comp UL, but couldn't trick as low as the Zero. The FLSUL is quite a bit heavier than the TNT Zero.

Spending some effort to decide how I feel about the appearance of the kite... I'd really dig it if not for the swords appliquéd into the sail.

Zero is pretty low wind flyer for sure - I know folks that I'm quite sure could fly it indoors!  :)  (no joke)

All that to say, the Tek goes very respectably low compared to other modern trick capable kites that I've flown as well as lams other SULs.

It took me some time to accept the design of Lam's kites. I was convinced by others that they fly so great, it doesn't matter what they look like. So I got a Sea Devil. It flew great, and I realized that the eyes & the waves are a great visual to keep track of which way the kite is pointing while you're tricking it. So I got another. Then a Fearless... then another. My latest is a Sea Devil that you can't even tell that it's a Sea Devil...

Or a Fearless that you can't tell it's a Fearless...

I enjoy Lam's kites so much, I'm sure there will be a Tekken or two in my bag in a few months...

BTW, Tom, I'm really liking the colors in your SUL, even though I swore off black kites !

Come fly with me Stephen.  Watching those blades whirrr and chop during an aggressive comete is like poetry in motion!  :)

Thanks Rob.  I just told him black sail and he did the rest.  I was a little concerned when he told me what he wanted to do, but told him to go for it.  I like how it came out.

I like your set here - Yin and Yang, both unique kites without a face.  Is the SD tattoo?

I don't wish to pry but did you have to pay extra to have the appliqué removed ? (http://fracturedaxel.co.uk/phpbb3/images/smilies/eusa_think.gif)

Well, it's really not a Sea Devil, it's a Sea Angel. Or a Ghost Devil ?  :o
A special kite my Wife arranged with Lam for my birthday. Lam made me a killer set of straps, too. So, can't say what she paid for it, but it is above & beyond... Nothing like a Lam kite to ease the pain of growing another year older !

I agree...the Swords remind me of Disney's Aladdin movie ....NOT that I've ever watched it!  ;D

The swords just don't 'fit in with' the rest of the nicely done appliqué pieces, IMO. Gives it almost a child's kite look! Others may disagree!

It reminded me of a "Jolly Roger" so I went with it....

I like the applique just fine, but the swords are scimitars which makes them persian. Arrr Sinbad.

Sometimes you may find that it really was a good idea to ask that new girl that you just met at with dance wearing the funny looking hat if she would like to dance with you!  :)

You never know where it may lead, you may even find yourself together for a very long time.

Either way guys, but I'll dance with her!  :)

To me the kite have to have meaning of some thing when you desided drawing a graphics on the kite, After the kite is done, I will find the Right name for the kite to go with the art work on the kite, not just colors and name what what ever you like. Now the kite is moving all direction like fighting in the sky, now look the swords and see what happen, sky combat tricking, very cool if you can see it :) I love it when I doing the Comete :)

Good day.

Never can make everyone happy, that is why this world have many thing interesting to choose :)

It would be nice to see a completely new/fresh design from the master.

What I like is that these kites do have a story in the design.  Not unlike the masterpiece Revs.  Panel kites are pretty also but there is only so much you can do with panels.

50 years from now Lam's kites will be interesting and panel kites will be in the closet.

The other key is the quality.  My first Lam kite a Fearless SUL is still flying as my number 1 kite.  It has at least 1000 hours in the air.  The sail construction is still near perfect.  One small wear hole in the sail.  The intricate stitching is still perfect.  I am probably going to have to go this new kite this summer.

You can't beat Lam's enthusiasm for his kites and the fact that he designs from the flyers point of view.

John

??? That's nearly 18 months flying every day, 2 hours per day, 7 days per week .... lucky b@$#&*!d.  Most of us can only manage 2 or 3 sessions per week  :'(

It's so easy to criticize others people's work. Regardless of people's personal preference to the design, it is clear the kites are at the top of their class in terms of quality of build and airworthiness. I love that they aren't just panel kites. They really are functioning art and that is rare. Combining aesthetics and quality into a piece is probably one of the hardest things To do for manufacturers. It is rare that a product stands out from the crowd so distinctly. It's not in my price range or ability, but I think it would be awesome to own these.

Or have some one to fly with :) I fly a lot when I am at the festival to make up the time I don't fly :)

So i will ask here...
I flew my really old sea devil mid vent today, and while it does fly really well still, its purdy beat up...(nylon sail) it was very windy and made think a full vent would be better today.

I have a fearless vtd ul which i probably should have gotten out.

In a nut shell: yall help me decide what to order next...
Should i get anoth sea devil which i really like, or get a new design to replace the mid sea devil?
Ie; do the newer designs like the Tekken fly differently than the sea devil?

Get what you like.  IMO the fearless is better than the SD but I like the WM, DS and a few others over the FL.  If you like the Seadevil get another one.

I have a vented Tekken, but haven't had much time on it yet in high winds.  In std sorts of wind, it's as good as the others which is oh so fine indeed.

When its truly ballistic, I pull out my orange fearless (5 pt frame) and set it to the nose forward knot.   This thing will fearlessly fly in any wind you are man enough to stay out in without pulling your arms off.   Mine also has the 3 point bridle, although I've been told that the turbo is better for high winds.  I like it so much as-is that I've never bothered to change it to the reverse turbo.  Competing last year, I flew on super long lines when the sand was being blown down the beach with no concerns.  It's a solid frame and the kite speds wind well.

My Transformer vent has a 3pt frame.  Due to that kites smaller size and having less pull, I think a 5 pt frame or a 3/5 pt frame would be even better for a high wind kite.   I've never broken anything on my Trans, but when you get int the high 20s you can see the lower LEs bend a little on the 3pt vent which makes me a bit nervous.   Next time I break a LE, I plan on swapping out the lowers for 5pt and see how I like that.

I can't wait to see how the Tek does in higher wind?  My feeling is that, due to its bigger sail and more pull, it will still have the precision to cut diamonds, but may not be as easy to trick in that wind as the other 2.  Well see.

Tom
