Title: AVFFF "Trick Challenge" Now CLOSED
Post by: np on December 06, 2012, 01:58 PM
This is the AVFFF. The challenge is meant for Beginners. You will need to video yourself doing 3 rotations of this trick. Special rules apply for Joe. (4 rotations) and NO cut & paste  ??? :D You will win a pair of Norm's Custom 2-finger straps. Joe, watch this real close and I think you will see 7 rotations.  ;)

Edit: RobB will also have to do 4 rotations. Poor Joe & Rob & Charles P.  ;)
Edit I will honor the first 4 videos posted.

Tip #1 Snap your arms to get the nose started under.
Tip #2 While your arms are still stretched out from giving slack. Once the nose is pointing back towards you Snap/Pop your hands back towards your face to unroll the kite.
Catch the kite back in a fade and continue the rotations.
Tip #3 If winds are 3 to 4mph use shorter lines...65' or 75'. Try it you might like it.

OK Norm...
Tomorrow I will start practising.
Hope I can get it   ::)

P.S. Does your Talon UL have no roll bars? At least I can't see them in the video...
Why is that?

I want to throw my hat in the ring!! I've been playing with this trick since I first saw the AVFFF thread and on my best day have performed two.   :(
I'm likely not to win this one but I'll give it a try. (weather permitting)

I'd just like to add that I really like these trick challenges, I never heard of a French Flic-Flac until that last challenge.
Someone said this challenge was directed at beginers, I consider myself an intermediate flyer and it makes me wonder how high is the bar set?!?!? I've been flying for over 5 years and tricking off and on for most of that time, seriuosly tricking for over a year and this trick is not easy!!!
Fade manouvers and tricks based off of them are my favorites such as back spin, back spin cascade and lewis (Jacobs ladder I've almost figured out and can do one rung sometimes two) still working on the inverse. Aww hell, I'm rambl'n!
To the winner go the spoils!! A fine set of finger straps. I'm just going to have fun trying to pull this trick off, thanks for the video and keep the challenges going!!   :)

I got cold cloudy weather.  But I have had my eye on those straps for along time... I may be old but I can still do it... Bit of advice it has to be done like Norm ..  It does look nice when you do it...

Title: Norm's Challenge you subject yourself to Norm's whip
Post by: vertigo2u on December 08, 2012, 04:44 PM
If you take this challenge he will beat and whip you till you do it right... No slacking or lay off's.  These clips are from Labor Day Sunday.. 25 attempts.  I can't show the complete one's cause they aren't four in a row.  And he's too good for cut and paste.  I've tried.  These are done without extending my arms... you'd think I'd learn by now... But look at the lousy 540's...  I will get better...

 +1 on the Wow Norm,

I really like the thinner straps, they all look great but I think I'll be trying to win the thinner straps!   :-\
If the weather permits I may try an attempt with video next weekend, otherwise it will have to wait until after Christmas.

Wayne,
I understand your situation so for you and of course Joe, it's open until you can post 4 respectable AVFFF's.

Can't wait to see what 2 months of not flying has done to my limited skills.  :(

Kind of like claiming a hole in one all by yourself, but I did it before Thanksgiving on Treasure Island.  Now if only I could get my wife to video for me!  She doesn't golf either, so I'm without a hole in one as well!!

Joe you have the right equipment

Norm,
you demo the AAFFF on both the Talon UL and WM UL, since I have both, my only excuse if a lack of talent.  :D  :D  :D    ???    :'(

Joe your Ocius will roll up faster than the WM so you have a choice of speed vs control. Nice to have more than one weapon in your bag.   ;)

Since I will never be able to win these, I'm thinking of using my wife's sewing machine (which I have almost never touched) to turn a set of Prism straps into a resemblance of their Duo straps. I assume it's not that hard? Just fold them up and stitch it a few times?

What benefit are all those overhand knots on the leader? Do they help adjust for stretched lines or something?

Title: Re: AVFFF Challenge
Post by: thief on December 13, 2012, 08:58 AM
Red Sweater go to REI and pick up about 3-4' of their 1" flat webbing (.40$/') or tubular webbing (more comfortable and cheaper at $.30/' little harder to sew since it is thicker though).....you can make a couple of sets that way for cheap...and you can customize them as you wish....
Cut with a razor blade then seal the edge up afterward with a flame to prevent fraying (hate when webbing frays!)....then you can loop that piece around until you find the loop configuration that you like the best (you could use a stapler to temporarily hold them in place......sew the ends together and any loopy parts where they touch....and for the end you can make a leader line out of their 2mm line or pick up a couple of plastic DRings there too and sew those into place.....

Something like username: Winterdaze made? Yes, the four overhand knots are used for quick in-field line adjustments.

Yeah, like that. I knew I'd seen this idea implement in this forum, but didn't have the time right then to do a search.

I might try out the webbing, though. I'll have to see the material first hand to get an idea of whether it might work.

Since I will never be able to win these,
What can I do to help you learn the trick to win a pair? Do you need a video of me showing the inputs only and not using the kite. I'll do what can to help you do the trick. If I can do the trick, it is not hard to do. You need to watch the video and in particular watch what I am doing. If you don't understand something then all you need to do is ask questions. Don't sell yourself short. Read all the tips I have posted. Good luck

Maybe I'm being too eeyore here. Thanks for being encouraging. I just don't get out to fly much, so naturally my skill level is slow to increase. I've had a Quantum for a few years, but only caught the trick bug last year, and so I got some better kites. But having our first kid made getting out of the house (for just about anything, let alone an activity only I enjoy, while my wife just passes the time) more difficult. Maybe I'll be able to do better this coming year, when it warms up again. Of course, I'm inland, too.

I have a long list of things I want to learn or improve, but right now, all I can do is axels and half axels (across my body -- I need to change that before I can try a cascade). I once held a fade for about 10 seconds. So there's that.

Title: Re: AVFFF Challenge
Post by: Ara Ararauna on December 14, 2012, 08:28 AM
Arggggghhh! I'll never make it...  :'(

I just can't fade!
I'm currently really getting the hang of spin tricks: Axels, HalfAxels, Cascades, 540's, even today I tried the Taz and I got quite a few and on both sides!

But fade is sooooo difficult for me....

Norm, I know you told me I have the right tool (meaning the TalonUL), but I cannot get it to fade! Argh!!!!  :( >:(
I can more or less get it to fade if I barely let it flare and then pull hard but the kite 99 out of 100 times bounces back down, exits the momentary fade and falls.
If I let the kite really pancake deep, then it likes to stay there and will not come out no matter how HARD I pop... *sigh*

So, if I can't fade, how can I flick flack. And if I can't flick flack, how can I ever get an AVFFF!

So keep my handles in the freeze so that they don't rot, 'cause I think it's going to take ages before I get it...  :(

We are for sure on the same page and I'm sure you will be one of the four winners.  8)  ;D
[/quote]

Norm, thanks for the vote of confidence, I guess we shall see. I'll be working hard on this trick given the opportunity but unfortunatly the weather here in Washington has other ideas!   :-[

Ara, try the things Norm told you to do to get into the fade, if you are good at axles it may be easier for you to get into the fade mid axle. I have also experienced that some kites almost refuse to fade from a flare but those same kites easily fade from an axle.  Keep trying and good luck, I think we will both get this trick figured out eventually!    :-X

So what you do here is STOP WORKING ON THE AVFF.  if you can't get a decent fade then you need to step back to the basics and forget ALL advanced tricks.  I spent most of the monthly fly helping someone with just that.  IF you can't fade, slide, stall and flic flac well then you really don't have the line control for anything more.  This trick needs a lot of line tension management to get right and the feel you need to hold and control a good fade is very important.  Work on fade launches, flare/fade, fade control and flic flacs first.  The catch of the nose and the line control to do that right as well as stabilize a fade if your a bit off in particular is what you need. You have to not only catch the fade but the reverse turtle as well and if your off on the line tension you will either  over rotate the turtle position or not catch the fade right going nose high or snapping out to a lawn dart.  Of course now that I know the feel of  it I just need to chain a bunch together in frame on vid :P

Norm,
You better put my straps in the frezer as well. It will be a while before I can pull off this challange.  ::)

Final finished this semester of Nursing school.  ;D
Then spent my first sesson just struggling to hold a fade. I can't be too suprised at how taking four months off from flying has sure reduced my already limited skills.  ???

Just now leaving for a vacation so I won't have a chance to pick up the lines until after christmas.  :-[

Norm's video shows us how to do it correctly..it's a matter of doing four in a row with control..

The Challenge is to do it like "Norm"... Not the sloppy stuff I did in the video.  That was months ago.... You have to do it just like Norm and smooth... Then you Win... We call the trick The French Flic Flak American version...

All of this has been referenced and acknowledged. We are NOT attempting a French Flic Flac/Flip Flop. We are doing a AVFFF and we are doing it the correct way.

First off don't gly your copter if the wind is over 5 mph untill you learn to control it and just practice hovers for a while.

Well Norm no straps for me  :-[
Not sure what I did to tick off the wind gods but I have not had any usable wind since the holidays to work on the AAFFF.  >:(

The flags have either been stiff or limp requiring a SUL or venter kites. Sometimes I get both winds on the same day. on the same day. Last Friday night fly I got there early to face 20mph winds. When night fell so did the wind. When the rest of the gang showed up we spent the night taking turns flying my Prodanceer SUL.  :o

Picked up a couple of nice used kites the Soul for my holiday break including  but not had any usable wind fo fly them. With Nursing school starting up my kite bag will be going into the closet until spring break.  >:(   Hope the wind gods will be kind to me then.  ::)

If the wind speed is up....Do them higher in the wind window. Video is a bit shaky using a small video cam mounted on a baseball cap.

Darn, darn, darn! I need to get my fade act running to be able to start trying the AVFFF!

The other day at the beach I had an hour of soft but VERY regular wind.
I took my TalonUL out and started to practice fades.

I started them from the floor, belly up and letting the wind push the nose of the kite back. Then just a gentle pull and the kite was up in the air with a nice fade. Walk slowly back and control always the lower wing (by pulling the hand that is opposite) as the kite raised.

6 rising fades like that I could do!  ;D
From floor to very high up.

In three of them, when I had the fade high up, I pulled the kite by popping both lines to make a dip and go into a pancake (I didn't yet let the kite roll past that into the fade again as the AVFFF needs).
But once in the pancake I couldn't get the kite back out... argh! I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I pop the lines again to make the nose of the kite pop from pointing back to pointing towards me again. But the kite just refuses to move and it just turns oddly and ugly and out of any stable position back into lateral flying.

Anyway, slowly coming.... but so slowly that I'll be able to use my new Pulliam handles in my daycare residence...  :(

I don't know if the Talon is one of them, but if you are trying to do the flic flac move  ( flare to fade) some kites don't like coming back into the fade position if you let the flare go too flat. When you put the kite into the flare position ( nose away) try pulling back for the fade just before the kite goes horizontal and at the same time walk towards the kite a little, you may find that solves the problem.

You can also get into the fade from the axel - axel the kite but as the kite is halfway through the rotation pop both lines and it should turn into a fade. Check out Randy G's flic flac tutorial and keep practising!

Don't give up! It's very hard to learn on your own, I know I have had to do this and it takes ages but it will eventually come. If you get a chance to fly with other pilots you will find you can learn things so much more quickly.

Ara.. Dont be afraid to use some short sharp aggressive inputs with the Talon UL. It will respond well.

OK, I will try that but I did try different positions of the flare when I did that. I'll keep trying.

Yep! I'm also (and was also that day) practising that. It is still not quite there but it'll come. Funny I have been trying for ages to axel with my right and get into the fade with both hands or with my left, and recently I'm being able to do it when axelling (if that verb exists :P ) with my left and pulling for the fade with my right... but it usually does it by chance and I'm so surprized when I get it that then I can't hold the fade for more than a second or two...  ::)

Keep tryin', keep tryin', keep tryin', keep tryin', ...

There's no dead spot in the flare with the Talon - anywhere will do. I'd suggest trying to keep moving forward as you pull (not pop) the nose back under with equal strength inputs with both hands.

Staying low looking for sand crabs to thump in the head.  :D  This kite is a very forgiving, if you haven't already noticed. Sloppy inputs and stays right with it. If you don't already have one, just maybe you should. Maybe even a new Duende.  :P

I assume the kite is the Silver Fox? (I see it is. The original link said only Fox for the kite type.) As an owner who is still not very skilled, your assessment is reassuring...or extra damning. ;)

Whew... ten in a row (although the seventh didn't rotate all the way >:-) just trying to find a crack to fit some criticism).
You must be able to do them asleep by now...  ::)

OK, I'll watch the videos a couple of times more and hopefully be able to fly soon...

All of this webbing just waiting for the first four videos.......and nothing.  :(

 Patience Norm!!

Patienece is a good word, I'm still working this trick and am still stuck on two. I did pull off three one time but the third was sloppy.
I am losing my patience with this winter weather, first we had ballistic winds now for the past two weeks we have had vitually no wind at all.
I'm thinking it may be a couple more months before I can make a serious attempt at this challenge but I'm still out here practicing every chance I get, patiently waiting for my efforts to yield 4 AVFFF's.

Are you working the AVFFF with your Custom Seven SUL? If you show me four with it you'll get two pair.   ???

;)  Yes I am using the Seven SUL for this trick, it and the the standard are both very good at this type of trick. The problem is the pilot!!   :-[

No need to offer me two sets of straps, but I wouldn't turn them down if your serious though!!

Good luck to everyone involved in this challenge, looks like weather and other commitments are effecting us all.
I've just got to win me a set of Norms straps!!

LoLo's suggesting she could help anyone that may still be working on the 4 AVFFF's to find their "center" by teaching them to combine their line work with her 4 ARRFF technique... very effective for shedding those moments of self doubt...

I know what you mean... This goes back to the day I started to teach Rufus to take off and wing tip and land.... He got so exceited when I told him we'd fly he ran grabbed the strings and started to fly.   He has been able to do one AVFFF the little punk...
Maybe LoLo and Rufus could fly pairs ????

Rufus flying Widow Maker.wmv (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSvpiXZl_TM#)

p.s.- I have been looking at videos of my past attempts at four.  I have videos of my body doing 4 but my kite is not in view.  I have a video of completeing three really nice one's and I have clips of doing 3.75 AVFFF's.

P.P.S.S.- Rufus agrees on the Cheesy Flight Straps.  He has found out when he is flying his paw ( not Pete) is able to snap the line faster and he feels the input.  He asked Uncle Norm for a smaller pair.

Norm,
LoLo reminds me that a classy dame never reveals her age, but I can state, though I would deny ever having betrayed her confidence, that she's 5 going on 6 on the 4th of July. And, Oh My, the thought of sporting a coveted length of "Cheesiness" would set her apart from all her contemporaries...

Just maybe LoLo could teach an old dog new tricks. :D :D :D :D :D

Should have seen that "bone" coming...  Still Artic Freeze Michigan way... Temps this week as low as -1 degree.  19 degrees today and some snow....  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Wind has been high for a week... It has not been fun... I keep watching film... I dream of four AVFFF's.  I am done over thinking this trick... I am just gonna do it ...  I do really nice one's ... I can do two really nice one's in a row and I have done  (4 without camera.) But NONE of them as nice as Norm's four in a row.  That is the place I will be by Spring's end ...  :-*

p.s.-  If your going to be ordering Cheesy Straps better do it soon.  Spring isn't far off.  Norm's fingers could give out...  The set I fly with may not be the type that suits you.  He has them different widths.. also some with finger holders (?) .. place to put your fingers in...  I talked to Jon T about the "Chessy Finger Straps" and the concept of it helping to fly.  My flying changed the day my grip changed.  One needs to feel the lines...  With straps I held my "little finger" all the way back and held the straps in the palm of my hand.  Not even close to the lines... (check the video posted on Grips)...

p.p.s.s.- All info posted for novice and for flyer's over 50  ....  and 60...

I'm right there with not being able to make it past 3. It's a trick I've been doing for a while, once or twice. Never tried to get a certain number, and I don't know what then mental block is about getting past 3 in a row. For me, I could probably get 10 in a row if I wasn't thinking about it, I just melt mentally. Then there's the whole thing about flying with the camera...
So, needless to say the wind & weather isn't cooperating either. The last good fly I had was the beginning of December. Gonna try again tomorrow, but the winds are predicted to be ~15mph. Sounds like it will be another Rev day...

Thought this might have been a gimme for you, Rob, as you've done this trick quite regularly on your vids.

Just relax and stop over thinking it.  I'm sure it will come.

This isn't a trick I've ever deliberately tried to do, although I suspect I've done a fair few in my feeble attempts at wap-do-waps. ;)

You should know by now the only way you will ever do advanced tricks is with a pair of Tim's 19mm Knuckle Dusters.  ;)  ::)
Probably the best UK sourced finger straps in the world (to misquote Carlsberg), but then I might have less than an unbiased view on them.  Worth the investment Steve, not that they will turn you into a 'ninja' flyer, but they certainly won't get in the way.  Other makes of finger straps are available of course, and may be just as good or better, eh Norm. ;)

Norm,
You a bit wrong on that one.  Yes.. Wayne is a class act on his congratulations...  :D :D :D :D :D

Your the "Real" class act.  8) 8) 8) 8) 8) Offering the challenge in the first place. I am proud to know you.  I know even though I have not concluded the challenge (video4) ...One day I will.  I and others who have tried to meet the challenge some times miss the point.  We learned a new trick..  ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Norm you have introduced a new trick to a lot of people.  Many of us probably do Really Nice "Double" AVFFF.  I know sometimes I can do one when ever I feel like it. Not 4.  But that is the beauty of it.  I like that it's a trick I do.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

For many of us the true Class Act is you. 8) 8) 8) 8)  The West Coast guys are having a ball with it. ;) ;) ;)  East coast is biting at the bit. :'( :'(  The spring will bring a number of guys trying to learn the trick.  With full instructions by you becuase you Care... :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

Just a guy who Cares...  That's a Class Act ...  You offer the prize which everyone knows my feelings towards. The real prize is we learned a New Trick... But you have encouraged so many to try... There is No telling how many guys will post on this thread all summer long.  Or how many more Straps your going to make.  Come spring we may need another "Challenege"... (how bout' 540's),, :D :D :D :D :D :D

I'd like anyone who agrees with me to let him know also...

I second what vetigo2u just posted.

These challenges from Norm are great, it gives a lot of us something to shoot for and in my case, to learn a trick I never knew existed.
I'd write a longer post on this subject but we have partly cloudy skies and low winds, I'm outa here! Going to the field to work on the AVFFF as well as some other tricks.    ;D

I also second what vetigo2u said.

Norm's earlier challange pushed me into learning the backspin.  ;D    Think about everytine i do a backspin or use norms straps.  ;)

Still excited about this challange and learning the AVFFF. Ran into two major obstacles. Lack of wind and lack of skill.

Hope to get some wind so I can develop my skills. Their is always room in my bag for another pair of norm straps.  8)

Thats right, 1-2-3-4-5!! I will try to prove this next weekend with a camera. I just hope I don't crack under the pressure.   :-X

Thanks, Tom. I haven't gotten much time on it, but the kite far exceeded my expectations. The Fearless is a little trickier, but it could be just slightly different in style. I will have to fly it more to find out.

Weather is still unstable.  Looks like a chance today and tomorrow.  Saw Rob bundled up.  If tempature rise.  I am flying.  Four weeks I'll be in Kentucky...around Ft. Knox if anyone lives that way...weather will could be better then.  A lot of people getting ready for the Kite Party.

Norm, I looked at my You Tube.  (I lost most of my files.)  However, it's amazing how many AVFFF'S I've done.  So many times right there.  However, looking at early one's I see improvement with the later videos.  Like 3 7/8 almost..so many times...  Going to try today as it warms.

Also hope to get a chance to fly my New Widow Maker Ul....

When I posted the number was 4,501. It's 4,953 as I post.  almost 500 Lurkers...  ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

Numbers sometimes mean something.  A lot of guys reading about this Trick and the communication going on.  Maybe others will post.  Maybe not.  Fact is a lot of people are 'Yearning' for the same thing.  Kite Flying ... Your "challenge" has gotten a lot of people through some snowy, gray cloudy, windy days. People are looking each day and wondering if some one will post a video of Flying and accomplishing the trick. Thats a lot Norm.  We are half way through February with spring coming... People will continue to look and others will post videos. It will be around in August.... Most important I think this thread gives people Hope.  That better winds will prevail.

Thanks, Krijn... that's exactly how I do them... in my mind ! I do notice that even with a TNT, the first few are stronger than the last few.
I can't wait to get back out there and practice these some more.

I do notice that even with a TNT, the first few are stronger than the last few.

yes, maybe that's true

a possible explanation: when the kite returns in the fade-position, you can let the nose go a bit higher, pulling it down again is a bit easier that way

the tnt ul comp isn't a great kite for this trick (i think the std and strong are much better (or the ul, without the competition), they are easier to yoyo), i had to use firm inputs

Title: Re: AVFFF "Trick Challenge"
Post by: RobB on February 16, 2013, 12:46 PM
I did notice that you use very firm, commanding inputs. Most of the kites I fly don't require much more than a flick of the wrist, and a bunch of slack. Maybe that's where I'm going wrong ? You don't seem to use too much room moving forward, and when I try this trick, I move at least 5 feet forward per cycle. I've never flown a TNT, either, so I have no idea how much different the inputs may be.

Rob if the conditions allow you to flic flac without moving your feet, you do not need to move much at all for the over rotation The fearless do not need a whole lot of input to bring them out.For me it seems, I pull to go into the trick about as much as I pull to get out
in Krijn's vid the song is about rhythm ps I really like the looks of your new kite

I'm just reviewing more video of my attempts (all I've got is time to sit around these days) and I'm going to blame it on lack of wind in my last session. I'll post a follow-up video (to Snow Devil) when I'm done clipping, and hopefully someone can spot what's wrong. If it has to do with rhythm, I'm at a loss... I had to quit drumming because I have no natural rhythm.   :(

If you check out Si,s video (Roisinroisin)you will see that like Ko suggests there is very little forward movement required for this trick. I fly with Si and he can bang these out all day long and barely takes a step forward. We use Talons and I suppose like everything else it all depends on the strength of the wind and the kite as to how you get the slack in the lines to allow the rotation.

I have found the lenght of roll up is kite specfic. I'm 6'2 and can rollup my Talon and Tekken with out stepping forward. full size kites (WM,Mongoos and Infinity) require me to step forward.

Have problems rolling up my shadow and WM UL in really low winds 2-3mph. when I get a little more wind, they rollup fine. but now I can fly the talon any maybe even the Tekken and they rollup quickier and don't require me to walk forward, so I fly them.

Joe you need to come to Las Vegas for our weekly fly. Just bring your shorts and t-shirt, temp in be in the 60's.   ;D

We got your kites covered with WM, Ocius and the Solus.   8)   You just need to bring out you Aura  :D

p.s  Bring some snow. We don't have any of that stuff here and it sounds like you have plenty.

Thanks Wayne I need the up lift... Temps in 20's today and it feels like 3 degrees.

If you watch Norms video he barely moves forward or back ward... In my early attempts I found myself running a half a mile while attempting to do more than one.  I think I posted all my mistakes...

If you watch Norm he stands and it's a 1-2-3 and done.  As I have gotten better doing three in a row.  I don't move as much.  I extend my arms out more in front and then backwards all the way... Watch Norm..  I get all anxious after I finish two really nice one's then a third and I loose it..

My problem is getting past the #4 Block.  I have posted 3 7/8 AVFFF but Mr.California Beach And Sun and Warm air  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(  Would not count it.
I do my best when I imatate Norm extending his arms all the way forward.... ( when the weather changes I am going to fly everyday)... :'( :'( :'( :'(

Cheap flight to Vegas on the strip Hotel and fly all day..better than a good day at the tables....

The Kid really made a spcial kite in the Aura ... I know I'm getting one soon as he gets back.  Problem is as Devin mentioned.  Cost. A lot of wasted material in making one.  In the end.  So what ?

I watched Devin trick the Ocius Sul.  When I got one I couldn't fly worth a darn. But,now a days I am getting the hang of things.  I love flying my Sul. He tricks the heck out of a Sul.  But to see him with absoluty No Wind tricking his new kite was scary ... One thing for sure No Wind Vegas in the summer won't matter ...

This is true here.  Not only is movement kite specific but wind specific as well.  Common mistake I make and I have seen other make is not doing a strong enough input.  You need to be more firm that regular flic flac inputs.  If you do a regular flic flac input it will require more movement to get it to roll up.  Basically do the same input as you would if your trying a yoyo.

Here's what happened to one of the other tall ships from the Pirates of the Caribbean movie during Hurricane Sandy. It was also used in the movie Mutiny on the Bounty. It was a replica of the Bounty, and used to dock in Port Jefferson during the summer months. This picture was taken from the coast guard rescue helicopter...

Rob,

I'm impressed. That is hard to do with a SUL.

Sure you will have it once your back on your feet.

Title: Re: AVFFF "Trick Challenge"
Post by: RobB on February 28, 2013, 05:01 AM
That isn't that hard with the 'right' SUL. It would be impossible with a Prism Ozone, at least for me, but the Sea Devil & Fearless can do this almost as easily as a standard kite.

I am actually back on my feet, and back to work. Don't tell anyone (I know I'm not supposed to, but if I had to work, I should be able to fly)... I left work on monday & stopped at the beach on the way home... got to fly for about an hour with the Sea Devil light in 3-5mph winds. It felt so good to fly, even if it hurt. No video, but I did nail 5 reps of the AVFFF. I know, no video... it didn't happen. But it was the first time I got more than 3 in a row, on or off camera, so I'm really happy to break the mental block.

 ;D

If the Seven SUL flies anything like  the Seven standard, it would be a good kite to use. The Seven std. is very strong in the flic-flac department...
The nice thing about doing this in low wind is that it is like flying in slow motion, and gives the pilot time to think. The tough thing is that it is sometimes difficult to keep the kite flying at all, let alone trying to do tricks.

I'm pretty happy with it but I am interested in how many rotations Norm will count as good ones!    :-X

Thanks Norm for posting these challenges, they are making myself and I believe others better fliers. This one was pretty tough but something tells me the fade challenge might be a little more difficult...... maybe not for Wayner, but still.     :D
Those straps look awesome and I can not wait to try out the ninja's!!  I've been chomping at the bit to get my hands on those ever since you sent me the sizing loops. The material you are using for the straps is far superior to anything I've ran into before, they just feel great!   8)

Good luck to everyone else trying to complete this challenge and if I may give my two cents on doing the AVFFF I would say that the first input is pretty abrupt and forcefull but you can over do it and over rotate. The second input should be smooth and actually gentle. At least with my SUL this was the case.

Its's on to the fade challenge for this kid, I'm sure that I'll have it done in a week with Norms straps in my hands!!    :D :D

I started working them the other day.  I had four nice one's in a row.  Hand right etc.  I was jumping up and down with happy as hell.  I am sure a few thought I was crazy.  I looked at the camera the lens was open meant it was "ON".  I was geeked... I looke at the camera OMG !!! Green Light is ON.  No video.  Camera stopped.
That day I bought a new Sony HD camcorder.  Never gonna happen again.  I went to the Beach yesterday.  I recorded three hours.  Here is one Ten minute segment cut down.  Wind was over 12 mph.  I had four large single kites up... Two 13 feet wide .  Just wanted you to know.  I am still in the hunt.  I am not going to be happy like that again till I do five in a row.  I only could get two nice one's in a row the wind was so had to deal with... But I practiced for almost three hours on AVFFF's.  Ton of single one's... I re-watched about three hours of film..

Thanks for the drive to accomplish this.... Nothing till on Film...

I am not sure how to post videos in the forum. How do you post a video so it can be watched within the forum?

Also, I went to Berkeley this morning and I am pretty sure I completed the challenge. Of course I need Norm to review my video first and approve it. There are plenty of fails in the video to see I have been working hard at this challenge.

The two points in the video that I think I have completed the challenge are at:

1:55 & 2:38

Norm, you weren't joking about the slack...

Let me know what you think.

btw:  Those flight straps will change your flying for the good.  Anyone else if you don't have Norms flight straps ..You can get them from Kites and Fun Things.  I gave away 7 sets of the premier straps.  I fly with Norms straps on all my lines... I have been doing a number of them...  I am learning to slow down... My goal has been taking care of my nemesis  The "Fade"... Norm is right my most success comes from my Std. Widow Maker in about 6/7 mph... She loves to Fade and my lack of extra slack is made up by it being heavier and pulling more slack from me...  I now set up each AVFFF before going further.  I have done four in a row.
But my goal is to do them like Norm.  Smooth and easy.. Not charging and pulling and jumping... Getting that fourth one nice and sharp.. Not just made it style...

Corn is planted and time to fly...

Your Right never can have enough Straps... I just got a couple new line sets... Others seem to like them a lot.  For me they changed my whole flying schematics...  Once I felt the lines everything became brighter.  I have been working my precision flying for weeks. Sharp turns and straight lines... Now that I have finally gotten by this I can continue on my Fade work...

That Half Axel is very important to learn.  It is equally important to control after it's complete.  Keeping it on the same line... Left/Right, Back and Forth... Months ago Tony mentioned that a Slot machine was just a 540 sideways.  He is so right.  But you can't do it without a half Axel...

I started flying them on a Diagonal.. gonna' break some Carbon before I get this one right.  The closer to the ground the scarier it gets...

Hoping to get Two Point landings and Wing Tips.

This week-end is our Big Kite Feat at the Beach... Just need to have a Great Day and bring Kiting to the Beach People for the first time...
It should be a Fantastic day for others who have never seen a Kite Fest... Nothing like this has ever been seen around here...

That was a nice and clean set. Practice has really improved your flying.

Enjoy those straps

I flew Nancy's "Deep Space Ul" tonight...  :P :P :-* :-* :P :P :P :-* :-* :-*

I flew my first JL's tonight ...also.  That Kite gives JL's out for Halloween.  I finished a AVFFF and decide to give it a try.  Boom !! I got one.  My heart jumped.  So worked it some more actually got 2 JL's in a row..Lt/Rt/Lt/RT/LT and down... Our wind tonight was terrible.  Jon T had us practicing 4 KiteTeam flying.  He has some really Great Team kites for No wind situations... So by the time I got to fly some more.  Night was over...

It's almost 2:00 am and my blood is still pumped. Been studying film and YouTube JL stuff... This is gonna be a fun day today...I have a feeling I'll be posting some nice JL's real soon.  Maybe I should go to bed and sleep.  I always have trouble sleeping night before some thing exciting. I'll drive to the Beach when the sun rises...  :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D  Amazing I wasn't but three or four feet off the ground.  Nice Kite....  Doesn't track like I'd want.  But well work on that tomorrow.  Going to sleep btw:
Nancy that Kite is a dream I'll wake up in the morning and No JL's No Fades No AVFFF No Flick Flacks.... all a dream.... Vertigo Out !!!
