Title: Flying off lake Nokomis in Mpls... one last flight, the ice is going out!!!
Post by: white wing lover on January 07, 2013, 07:48 PM
Mitch Kiel and I had a little fun flying in the warm sun on the iced over lake today.

Mitch just picked up a couple of delta conynes and some transition tails that went for a spin along with some Tibetan prayer flags I was given by a local monk.

The 'Zilla (thanks Steve) was lookin' for a little more wind...
The wind was starting to get settle down when we got there, it had been in the low teens earlier in the day  :P

By the way, that's an old Sun Oaks 12ft.er haulin' the goods.

VERY Nice! but I can't see any ice over a lake or even the lake...
The place sounds beautiful but seeing is believing  ;)

The park dept. left a couple of buoys on the lake, nice slk anchors.

Another nice afternoon and I managed to get over to the lake...
Training the dragons has worked out very well, spaced about 17 ft. apart. The little parafoil is always a quick grab, rolled up and ready to go. It's a 4 cell piece from the U.K. with a Gomberg tail.

Sunset was delightful  8)

Doin' a test fly of a recently acquired Premier 11ft. delta. 20ft. tube, 15ft. streamers...
Off she goes...

Hard to beat a walk on the lake in the late afternoon sun with temps in the mid 20's and < 10 mph winds  ;)
We've had a few gentle snowfalls lately and that brought back good footing after earlier rains had stripped off most of the snow cover...

On Lake Hiawatha, Lake Nokomis's little brother, very light breeze and a bunch of fresh snow.

Ooops, need to do a little tuning... Or did it think it would do a little fishin' ?

Much better, the breeze was fading fast and the deep snow cover made for difficult footwork to try any gliding!

Thanks for posting these pictures. I enjoy watching them a lot.

BTW, have you seen the airplane in the far back, just above the tail of the kite where the sunlight is really bright?  ;)

We might be lucky and get a couple more weeks of safe ice for walking, flying... 8)
A little more air time on Lake Hiawatha. Getting a little fresh air today, temps in the 20's wind in the low teens...

Scott Spencer cell, very nice flyer...

The Wala did well in the moderate breeze, interesting kite. I'll have to learn to do some gliding when the winds have gone missing...

Not sure how much longer the ice will be safe for flying, but I managed a couple of hrs. on Monday. The winds were shifting around a bit and had faded from earlier in the day. Even so, it's hard to resist the fresh air, blue skies and a pleasant sunset...

Hearts in Flight for World Peace kite got some air time after returning from the Kite Party that never happened for the 11th. time...

This kite was passed along from a member of a Jersey flyers club, don't know their proper name.
The windmill blades spin as it flies, the ladder tail was in need of some untangling, oh well...

The winds were a little gusty as they shifted directions and the kiki took a nose dive...

This little hex cell is a lot of fun, and an active flyer...

Well, maybe I'll be fortunate to have another chance to fly here before the ice breaks up...
The sunset was worth waiting around for, I love the afterglow...
