Title: Another Sixth Sense in the world
Post by: sugarbaker on January 30, 2013, 06:03 PM
Finally built a SS Std for me to keep...  every one I've built prior has gone out into the world!  This one is mine (although I suspect some of you local folks here in Seattle may get a chance to fly it.)

and since it rained most of the day today, here is an artificially back lit view.

What a great looking kite!!!  My kind of color for our Seattle grey sky!!!

When can we have the opportunity to fly it?  This weekend should have clear days for flying. Should Tom, you, and I get together at kite hill?

unfortunately, I will be working this entire weekend.  I may sneak out to the hill in the morning one of these days, but that is a big 'maybe'. We will find time soon though.  I've got a stack of skills I want to learn (don't tell anyone that I'm not a very good pilot of kites!) and a stack of kites I've yet to fly. (What good is a collection of kites if you never fly? it makes me sad!).  Anyway, we'll get a day in the next few weeks I'm sure.  Hopefully there will be some wind, otherwise I'll have to practice on my Invictus ghost that Tom has flown, but I've yet to get in the air.

Talk to you all soon.

http://www.stuntkitepalermo.com/ProgettoSixthSense.rar (http://www.stuntkitepalermo.com/ProgettoSixthSense.rar)

this link should be to download the plans, which are mostly in english with the exception of the text file.  I have never read the text file, but I have built many kites before so I'm not sure if the info in the file will be valuable to a first time build or not.  The most important files are of course the plans (I print the A0 pland and A0 template arrangement) and the .jpg file with frame measurements and bridle measurements.).

We should definitely get together - I'll bring my whole bag.  I've got all of lams newer kites and a few others that you may not have tried yet either.    I'd love to try the 6th sense and your Mohawk as well.  The clean lines of the Mohawk always impress me.

As far as I'm concerned, spring can't get here fast enough!  Text me if you head out some morning - I've been looking for a reason to take a day off!  :)

Way to go sugarbaker!
Really nice...  ???

How about bringing it to sunny Barcelona and letting the warm sea breeze embrace it in its lullaby?  ;)

And also let me try it...  :P

Cheers!

Sugar baker,
Do you have any close up shots of the sail and the pinstriping?
Pretty Kite!

At the moment I don't have any close ups... perhaps I'll take some when I finally get the kite out to be flown.

the only italian portion of that .rar folder is the .txt file and the word Rinforzo  on several of the panels... those panels are Re-enforcment panels, typically made out of mylar. The measurements are in millimeters.  Have you made a sportkite before?  If not, I would consider starting with another kite that has more extensive documentation... such as Christian Derefat's Le Quartz.  If you've not stumbled across it, there is a great website here
----> http://www.tweelijners.com/tom/tomskitesite-en/Home.html (http://www.tweelijners.com/tom/tomskitesite-en/Home.html)

That walks you through a simplified plan of Le Quartz.

A read through this .pdf might also be beneficial, as it discusses techniques for printing plans, cutting templates, and a number of hints at building kites not covered on Tom's website.

http://www.tweelijners.com/werner/download/Sugarbakers_%20Bzar_2011.pdf (http://www.tweelijners.com/werner/download/Sugarbakers_%20Bzar_2011.pdf)

If you already have built kites in the past, I don't know what else to tell you.

Thanks for the construction detail pictures.  I will someday attempt to make one of these and it helps in understanding how to go about it.

Can you have these large templates printed at Kinkos?

I'm thinking, first run, just skip the panels and make 2 half sails and sew them together using the cheapest icarex that I can find  - is this a good idea?

Unlike Kenny, the sewing part has me concerned....

Thanks,

Tom

Yes, kinkos will print them.  When you take the PDF in, make sure they understand you have to print at 100%. I've only ever had them print on 36 inch wide paper.  So, for the sixth sense, it will cut off either the nose or the tail.  With the panels, this isn't a problem because you can line up the seems and the panels will be in the right spot.  In terms of making two halves and sewing them together, you'll probably need to print on 48 inch, and I'm not sure if kinkos will do this.  What you could do, alternatively is print the A0 size on 36 inch and then cut and tape the tail portion in place to make the template.

For the sixth sense, you'll need a big table to cut out your fabric.  Best of luck.  I'm happy to come by and help out if you get stuck in the middle of your project.

Great i may try kinkos, good idea. I started my sewing career in 2006 when i was rebuilding a old school minibike with my kids, I needed a seat so I made one. since then ive made way too many seats to count. most of my sewing has been on vinyl thats why i wanted to try kite building.

Some outside pics.  Next to no wind, so not the best day to fly this Std version, but got her in the air anyway.

Nice job on the SS 'sugarbaker'! I haven't been on the forum in a few weeks or I would have posted sooner!
Now it's time to make an Invictus for yourself! ;)

LOL, I do have an invictus... Std and UL (Ghost) versions.  Ironically though, I have not flown them.  Soon enough I will be at the coast for a few days with a giant stack of kites that have yet to be flown by me...

I flew this very Sixth Sense this weekend - even in higher winds, I was very impressed.  Thanks Stephen.

So much so that I'm more motivated than ever to build my own kite!  :)
