Title: Do you have a kite you instantly connected with?
Post by: JayDee on February 23, 2013, 07:56 PM
Many of us have a favorite kite.  Correction: Probably all of us do.  But some kites may take a little longer to appreciate, explore and get used to, while others are an instant fit -- love at first flight.  One such kite for me was my Talon Std:

(http://www.jan-dolzer.net/Pics/Talon_Rissers.JPG) (http://www.jan-dolzer.net/Pics/Talon_Rissers.JPG)

When I first flew it, everything felt just perfect.  All of a sudden, I looked a two levels better flier than I actually was at the time.  The kite and I immediately connected.  That was at Shoreline, must be some three years ago now.  Everyone else out there said the same thing:  They could literally _see_ how that kite worked for me.  And I had not flown a Talon ever before.  I ordered it because I liked the graphics, and -- more importantly -- the videos available at the time suggested that it should be compatible with my flying style.

I am sure others have experienced something similar, a kite they instantly clicked with.  Please post your experience!

To clarify:  There have been quite a few other kites I loved (and still love), such as my (heavily modified) Widow (http://www.gwtwforum.com/index.php?topic=1817.msg15744#msg15744) and my Widow Makers (http://www.gwtwforum.com/index.php?topic=9237.0), as well as many kites that friends let me take a spin with.  But all of those grew on me quite a bit more slowly.  That is not what I am asking for.  It is that Love At First Flight experience that this is about.

For me it feels like any skyburner SUL kite I've had an instant connection with. The same story you just said applies to myself there as well, and also with the BMK Mamba. For some odd reason just 1 though. I've had 3 or 4 and I've felt really REALLY good on just one of them, while the others seemed different. Glad you found a match that works well for you. :)

Interesting find with those Mambas.  I am curious how big variations between individual kites are.  There was clearly a difference between the last builds of the Prism E2 and earlier samples,  but it would not be surprising if a less systematic variability can be found in boutique kites and mass-produced ones, too.

I would say the WidowMaker would be the kite that I clicked with instantly. It is so forgiving, it makes me feel like i can fly better than i actually can. I get bored flying it sometimes, because nothing unexpected ever happens... All the rest have a learning curve to them. Maybe only a few hours to get used to some kites, and months for others. There have only been one or two kites that I didn't like at all, and some that I like enough to have hope that they'll seem great to fly someday. I'm just not ready for them yet...

For me it was the AzizA......I had flown many kites before that one but it just honestly just started teaching me what it liked to do and reacted to what I liked as well...

Do you have any pictures or videos?  Before your post, I had never even heard of the AzizA, and there seems to be hardly a handful of pics of this kite on the internet.

Aerostar Sano. (doesn't really matter which one, my first was a SSZ, I think I use the SSL more) New school capable, old school comfortable. Just like me.

Fearless std.
What can I say?

Zerostar, Sano SSL, Sano SSZ, Gemini UL, Vented Rev 2, Vented Rev 1.5

Normally, I'd say the Rev II, but that's the one I learned quad flying on. It wasn't an instant connection, but it's the best connection.

Sano SSZ has finally overtaken Zerostar for sheer joy, but not nostalgia wise.

Another vote for the Sano and the Widomaker.

It actually took the Widowmaker to bump the Sano from #1 spot in my bag.

The Utopia is one of the prettiest kites I couldn't fly well.

Chris Matheson designed it....there are 50 Flames and about 200 of the standard color.
Originally they were all Black with a colored tip, but towards the end of the run of them Chris had made some other version as well - i have that one that is a deep blue main skin and a green tip and i also have a red skin with black tip too.
designed in the mid  90s it was a product between Ben Purcell and Chris....higher aspect....fast..very durable....this one taught me to axel (and boy did it!) and flic flac...i have gotten barrel rolls (not certain what it is called now but the kite is flat parallel to the ground and then rotates 360 around the spine) out of it but not exactly certain how.....

I fly it on short line...~40-50'...and it is a blast....starts flying around 5 but i have heard rumors that a reframe gets it lower....

The Androgyn has always looked like a "connection" type kite. Glad to read they fly that way too.

For me it was a kite that wasn`t mine and I only had it aloft for about 30 seconds. It was also my introduction to literal 0 wind flying. I "flew" a Skyburner Pro Dancer sul and in this brief "fly" I was totally blown away.
Within a couple of months I owned one and still many years later it still has that WOW factor. I`ve also acquired a PD ul and a rare PD vented....all 3 connect with me the same way as they are the only sul/ul/vented kites of the same model that feel the same no matter what wind.... btw I`m a die hard old school flier....
The other one(s) were/are a rev 1.5 sul, a BMK/Chicago Fire Killer Bee, and a BMK Mojo ul of the final 20 Ken made.

For me the first two that I really connected with right away was my Shawn Tinkham Viper and Viper UL. The Nirvana and Transfer xt.r were the next two and when I got my Talon it was right there as well.

Ken McNeill and Chris Matheson kites generally, They both made kites that just fit the way I fly and how I like a kite to feel. Deep Space too but out of all Tim Benson's kites the Outer Space was my favourite. Why did I sell it  :'(

I broke another two of its Dynamic T8s.
I guess we're even.  :-X

Allen Carter's Midi (I think) was the first one to have The Feel I thought a kite was supposed to have. That one led to my Mamba. The DeepSpace feels like home. I could suddenly do things I hadn't been able to do before.

Within the first five minutes of flying I knew I'd found the kite that would teach me. I kept yelling to my friends that I'd found *my* kite! I have that exact same sensation each time I pick it up after messing with a different kite. A hugh sigh of homecoming.

AzizA is high on my list of must gets. Mostly because I'm such a Matheson fanboy.

The Midi is a kite i connected with big time. Still do.

As a design, rather than an individual kite, I would say the Mamba is one of the most comfortable kites to fly. It was like an old friend in a minute. I say design rather than kite to address ADX's issue with an individual kite being so much different than other samples.

There are certainly some kites on the market which have inconsistent assembly and unspecific changes in design from year to year or batch to batch. This is generally not an issue with the Bensons and Blue Moons, but those are pretty high standards.

More often two of the same kites will fly noticeably different do to adjustments, repairs or wear. While the Mamba is one of the more consistently pleasing kites I have seen some pretty drastic changes to bridle and frame geometry. Most often a kite is adjusted in search of some specific flight characteristic and others have suffered.

That said, there can be mysteries. I have two seemingly identical kites from a high quality builder which have consistently different forward speed and subtle differences in other ways. I've had them down to bare sails on the floor for direct comparison and even swapped framesets. A real mystery. In reality the differences are easily adjusted out, but I still want to know why, dammit!

I got my hands on one of Revs xtra-vents and it was "love at first flight"! No more worrying about how the kite was going to handle high winds, this baby just felt so good!! Gave me confidence to fly in the "Team Boot Camp" last year before WSIKF and learn my first routine!! Ended up getting one of my own, it was that nice!!  ;D

That brings up the next question.  Those of you who have posted their soulmate kites here: Did you try before buy?  As I wrote at the beginning of the thread, I did not.  Got lucky with the Talon, but was less lucky another time (http://www.gwtwforum.com/index.php?topic=9237.msg81959#msg81959 (http://www.gwtwforum.com/index.php?topic=9237.msg81959#msg81959)).  :(

Try before you buy ? Hah! If anyone else flew within a couple hours of me, I might have that chance. I have bought a couple of kites that were sent to me on demo, though. Other than that, I take the advice of everyone here as to what the next kite will be, and also judge from the videos that people post. I always have about 10 kites on my list of next to buy...

Title: Re: Do you have a kite you instantly connected with?
Post by: tpatter on February 28, 2013, 04:37 PM
I've never had the 'try before you buy' luxury - most all of my favorite kites (meaning I've been flying them for a few years now), I did not first get a chance to fly.

Fearless, Trans, Tekken, TNT Zero, R-Sky 15, KFX, Exile, I'm sure others as well.  The good news is that if you don't get on that well with the kite, its usually not hard to sell it for a small(ish) loss.

I chalk it up to an education fee!  :)   I can tell you, if I only lose $50 taking a chance on a kite I've never flown, I'm still happy about it.   I mean, I saw a bad movie last week with my kids (we all didn't care for it) and I paid more than that all total.

The standard Viper I did fly first. I flew a prototype and it was great so I was sure the final version would be good as well. The Viper UL was the very first one made so it was a educated guess based on the standard that I would click with it.

The Nirvana, Transfer and Talon were all bought before ever flying one.

Did you try before buy?  As I wrote at the beginning of the thread, I did not.

The more you try before you buy, the more you'll fall in love  ;D

Our Friday Night fly crew has FORCED me to buy kites. Did the put a gun to my head? no worse, they let me fly their kites.  >:(

John (Chilese) pulled out his Mojo UL and said "come fly this". So when Ken at Blue Moon Kites opens up one last production run on the Mojo UL, I had to be first in line  8)

Mark (reddobie here) bring out his Level One Amazing. After that night, I went on a mad search till I found one (Thanks Theif)

Darrin (Fidelio) lets me try his Talon UL. The next morning I'm at "A Wind of Change" when Gamelord open his doors to by one.  :D

The moral of my story. Beware of a freindly kite flyer who offers to let you fly a kite. Its a sinister plot.  :P

Yes, as previously stated I did "try before buy" a PD sul, but very very briefly...like about 30 seconds...100 ft. line...zero wind....lust at first tug. Plus being in the presence of one Mr. Ray Bethell....yes it was one of his...helped a bit....
I had already been flying revs for a couple of years before I bought a 1.5 sul. It was more of being introduced to 2 wrap frames than the kite itself.
I moved out of the city to where there are no (serious) kiters at all and bought BMK kites just because...had never seen one in person before...but I just "knew"....

Bensons and Mathesons I mostly flew before I bought (the Outer Space I broke one of the prototypes :o, flying it in a gale at Swindon.)

I've got a pretty good feel for how a kite will fly just from watching a video and I'd flown Air FX's before so I bought my BMKs unflown but I wasn't disappointed. Lovely kites if you appreciate how a kite feels not just whether it can do a wrapped comete.

Sea Devil
If someone would tell me, pick up the kite and fly 10 minutes to see what you can do with kite my choice would be Sea Devil.
With SD I feel so nice...
Yes I know there is mass of kites which are realised after SD was born but SD neutral behavior is really nice and one more important thing- gives me a lot of time between tricks to think what to do next.
Simply , that kite wait for me ... Between tricks...
Best, boris

Tattoo - it was not so much a connection it was to me the ULTIMATE connection between flyer and kite - I knew it was a kite that could not be surpassed at 1 mph winds. This is my perfect Nirvana ... flying with 50-60' lines. Pure off the ocean winds ... this can't be described into words ... when these CONDITIONS exist ...  8) 8) 8) ... as this time frame usually last only a hour or two every month ... in the SUMMER.

For me it was the Silver Fox 2.3 UL. I know it is not a true ultralight, but at about 3-4 miles per hour, the kites flies with great precision and trickability. The first day that I flew it I learned 3 new tricks. It is not the most expensive kite out there, but for where my skills were, the kite opened up some doors for me and allowed me to see what the newer style of kites can do.

Looking forward to flying Tattoos side by side again sometime soon...
