Nice job on the tails, zero1199.  Hope to see them in person sometime soon.

Did you get the Rok in the air?  Need to see some pix of that too . . .

Was the black conyne a custom build?

We had custom colored ones made up all of the time......there are some neat patterns!
Wish i had used the digital camera as much then as i do now!

I am pretty sure it was a custom.  I got the kite from an estate and there were quite a few custom Sun Oaks in the collection, and some of them unflown.  Zero1199 got it and has done a really nice job with the tails.

I can't wait to see it in person.

That would be me, and I have flown it once - let's see if I can get a picture up. It had a tendency to heel over to the left, and I didn't have time to do any tuning.

Incidentally, how does one pronounce "Conyne"?

I just say DC ;)
IIRC it should be said as ko-nine

I'd be interested in hearing details of how you tune your DC to fix it heeling to the left. I have two Gomberg DC's and they both heel left. I'd love to straighten them out but don't know how.

two simple things to check first.

1. make sure the LE spars are all the way to the bottom of the wing.
2. switch left and right LE spars and see if the kite leans to the right

I thought it was "kanye," as in Kanye West. Ko-nine sounds the most plausible, but dude..... I'm going with your DC idea!

3. Do the hokey pokey, then shake it all about.

All of the above.  ;D That's easy you telling me That yours is heavy to the left. Add wait to the right keep adding Until the kite  level out and stable.

I remember adding small fishing SINKERS to some of my of other kite. You can also add tail to that side.

Thanks -

I may get it into the air tomorrow at Cape Henlopen. If so, I'll try some of these suggestions. I did think of being sure the LE spars were all the way down, but ran out of time to check it out.

Hi Larry,
I must say that I'm surprised to hear this kite didn't fly strait on, it's always flown locked in for me as opposed to my other S.O. Conyne which does want to track left if it's not trailing some sort of tail. It's solid flight was even the inspiration for a friend to pick up a couple of conynes from GKP which are a bit jumpy. So, the wing spars were pushed to the rear completely, hmmmmmm. If you're not happy with it, I'll buy it back for the same price. Conyne, pronounced "coin" or "co-nine". I prefer the later. It just occurred to me that, maybe, it was trying to head back in this direction... ;)

Hey -

No problemo - I'm sure I'll get it sorted out. I thought I was going to fly it Friday, but that didn't happen. Sometime soon.

As I think of it, where I was flying, "left" was kind of north west, ...

ZERO1199 I was lucky enough to see your kite flying over the weekend at Veterans Park Milwaukee, WI right along with your custom Rev.  Both impressive to say the least and you're certainly lucky to own such beauties!

Needless to say everyone seemed to be talking about it including some of the WI Kiters Club members.  Hope you can make it to the Memorial weekend kite festival there and fly them again.

FYI

This thread encouraged me to order a new Sun Oak Kite from their new website.

I ordered the 8 foot Seminole: black, red, and yellow.

I wish they had tails or line laundry but maybe that will come later.

So thanks for all the nice pics.

Just wanted to share.   :)

About ten to twelve years ago Gomberg used to have exact matches for sun oaks colors, so we had a lot of custom trails and laundry orders to go with the kites we sold..... Those are sadly long gone though

I just heard from Sun Oak and they have 15 foot hand sewn 'bow' tails to match for $15.

Though I don't exactly know what a 'bow' tail is--maybe those old fashioned tails you often see depicted on diamond kites in pictures.  Could be cute.  We'll see....

Fly on!

Yes, I spoke with Jim Keown and he looked in the barn and said he found me a matching bow tail.

We had a nice talk about getting back into the kite making business--they want to make kites for those who are going to fly and enjoy them, not so much for the retail distributors, etc. He said they didn't re-open The Trading Post.

We talked about collecting SunOak Kites and he said that there was just an auction where someone bought a lot of 20 Sun Oaks.  This was in California.  Darn, I would have liked to have been there.  I did just get notice of an auction in Tennessee where they sold a lot of four or five SOKs for like $15 or so.

I wondered if those buyers frequent GWTW....?!
