Title: MICRON PEERS?
Post by: alien on May 06, 2013, 07:12 AM
The Micron is a cheap, very exciting kite with a bang for buck that cant be beaten and i wonder if other makers past or present have or have had similar kites in their retail line ups?
Ive noticed plenty of flyers own them but nobody really makes, takes much notice or reference to this evil little Speed Demon that really speeds up your hand-eye so much so that when you pull out the big wing to trick its like its in slow motion and you are always a step ahead with plenty of reflex in reserve.(not that it helps me any)
Is this a secret that no ones sharing as its high speed,in your face,do not blink or you will crash ,is more like a high tuned turbo muscle-memory technique more than a high speed toy?
Or will it cause harm if used in large doses?

The first one that comes to mind is the famous Mini Tram...

The second is the infamous Mini Edge.

Don't confuse the Two.

:)

Oh.

On the Micron. Hold your hands together. Just use finger movement. It's enough.

Ground Zero kites of Australia -Tasmania really (Robert Brasington) used to have the Nipper that was a great  smaller kite that was very good on its own, but also looked great in stacks too!

Try the HQ Delta Hawk in 20mph+ winds - super quick like the Micron but it tries to pull your arms off!! Small but mighty...220lb lines are a must!...stack it at your peril!!

There were quite a few kites of Micron size back in the '90s. I have one by Shanti, Which is a mini version of the Lotus , and a Mosquito by Tori Tako, shown here with an actual Micron. Neither of these was intended for the extreme strong wind the Micron can endure, but they sure are fun.

Try a micron 5 stack for some real fun. (with tails on)

Then for extra fun get another 5 stack and fly pairs with a friend.

Yeah, the newer one is tamed somewhat. I like my '98 just fine. Second sport kite I ever bought. That was sure a newbie mistake!

Flying those five stacks with Mark was the most fun I've ever had kiting.  We would fly clockwise and counter clockwise loops next to each other and sort of weave the kites together.  :D

I saw a 50 stack of Microns being flown on FaceBook today.  When the video makes YouTube, I'll post the video.

I like to fly 2 at the same time, one in each hand: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jQPz-y1HwIY (http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jQPz-y1HwIY)

I also have 2 Premier Zoomers, they are a little bigger than the Microns and only $20 a piece.

If you can do two microns at the same time you're doing pretty well.  ???

Tony is Ripon's answer to Ray B. I've seen him fly three kites at a time, but don't think they're Microns.

you could also look into:
Flexifoil Hotshots
Guildworks Minergies
Ryv .5 (there are some plans out there for much smaller than production revolutions)

Here is my Micron flying style.
3 stacks, stacked!  15 kites in one stack.
It is a kick to fly these, they're fast and quick in the turns, but I am able
to make multiple landings and launches.
The stack needs at least 10 mph wind for smooth control, and I have
handled them easily up to 20 mph.

The picture posted by 'thief' is my favorite of All kite pictures!!
For a really fast kite the Speed-Wing is the best. I have flown it at up to
40 mph wind, and 90 degree turns are so fast you almost do not see it turn.
Pictures here:
I am having trouble attaching pictures. I will try them again later.

Multiple style flying, ie: Ray Bethel, I fly 2 nexus 5 stacks, one by hand
and the other on my belt, but with another pair of hands for "show".

When you build a stack i highly recommend that you do not do direct lines between the kites....

set it up so that you have pigtails on the BACK of the kites, and then link lines with loops on the front of the kites....to fully assemble just larkshead the frontward facing lines to the pigtails on the back of the kite in front of it....
and remember to leave the bridle on the very front kite too!

that way you can easily disconnect the kites to break the stack apart to untwist, fix, etc....

Thief,
Ive stacked an easy 2 microns(did not remove the second Microns bridle) and NIGHTMARE on HELLS BEACH happened, high winds, toddler, stacked Microns, tails, lines and i had a bad day!
I will try your kite stack advice for my next attempt, hence the great respect and admiration of stringystuffs very extreme Micron effort,it really does look brilliant.

Side note regarding pigtails for stacks. Bloody awesome things. I have them on all my Revs and it makes set up/take down a breeze. Allows for various configurations too.

I find that staking the lines out for a stack and then leaning the kites back against this tension allows you to correct any tangles and get them sorted. The triangle bag also allows you to leave them assembled and connected, attach the lines, put the standoffs in place and your ready to go.

Absolutely love my little Microns.  For extra fun try light wind flying or longer 75' lines if the wind is brisk.  If you're not challenged by the Micron 5 meter lines are especially entertaining.  I like to fly them in mall parking lots to pass the time.  Plan to have a stack of seven shortly.

Title: Re: MICRON PEERS?
Post by: alien on May 14, 2013, 02:54 AM
dayhiker,
how good is the Micron on the extra long lines?
I use my standard Hypnotist lines when its howling, the windows huge!
Low level window crossings then suddenly a pulse of wind and Micron shakes his evil little head and the turbo cuts in as he does the Banshee Scream for the sky.  :o
Warning-Microns should be taken only as directed,if your symptoms continue see your supplier for more.   :-*

omg i flew all 50 today and stopped just shy of 5 minutes to make the official largest stack of micron fly tomorrow at ocean shores kite festival. 5 minutes and 3 loops is what it takes to be official.  in front of a crowd and in front of cameras so everyone can see it make the record book.  but we have already flown 40 for over 5 minute.
