Title: Benson and his boys in the Trick or Treat DVD
Post by: cids on June 10, 2009, 08:05 PM
I'm watching the T or T DVD many many times now. The Benson's boys flown their DS or Gemini like doing magic. Their paces are super fast and energetic. In comparison, nearly all the kite tricks videos in YouTube look very very slow and b :( ring.

I think Benson and his boy are some of the best fliers alive  :D !

I have a Deepspace and I have to agree it is one heck of a fast kite. Its more about having to catch up with the kite's pace in order to make good with it. Pretty feel good kite too thats extremely forgiving and very recoverable from bad mistakes.

However the bigger challenge is trying to fly the Deepspace as slow as you can. Slow down all the tricks to like 1/2 - 3/4 speed. Its an interesting challenge in itself.

I agree with Darryl. I don't even concider using a 50# line with the DS. For low winds I use 90# line and 150# or 200# when the wind is near the upper level for the kite. The heavier lines create drag which slows the kite down a bit. And the nice thing is the inputs to the kite do not change all that much. The kite is very sensitive but forgiving except for heavy inputs. Try to use force and all hell breaks loose.

They are all talented.  Personally, I think Lars is a true jedi master (and not coincidentally the only one in the video with whom I am acquainted ;) ).  The great thing is that he is one of those pilots who needs about 10 minutes on nearly any other kite, and he's locked in.  If you can fly a Gem or DS like that, most other kites are moving in slo-mo.

I think I heard (in the video or elsewhere?) that Andy W said that seeing Lars fly the Gem is what inspired him to pick it up again after a rather long pause.  Lars told me that wap cascade seen from behind him is the FIRST time he'd ever flown a DS.

It's just a great video.
