Title: Nirvana Roll Call
Post by: chilese on June 12, 2013, 03:35 PM
I was wondering how many of these popular kites had been around.

So would you please state:

• How many Nirvanas you have owned.

• How many Nirvanas you still own.

To be fair, I'll start it off.

None and none. (Sorry, always liked the Opium a bit more)

Bonus points if you have ever owned the brown version or a custom.  :)

I've got a long history with this kite - it's like a guy who keeps re-marrying his ex wife!  :)

I've had 3 (past tense), here they are.  I really miss having sold the second one - quite a looker!

First one:

I still have this one, although it is an NFX:

Love it!  It's one of the few non-Lam kites that I've kept.

It's among my favorite r-sky, along with the KFX which may be my favorite.

I've only owned one... one of the First Fifty™ that came in a plastic tube, with a mini CD of videos and tungsten carbide weights. I respected what it did much more than I liked it and moved it along. I've flown OPKs many times since, including Collectors and Debray Replicas, and have always had about the same sort of feeling. A great kite but somehow not one destined for my kitebag in any of the multitudinous varieties that exist.

I have the HW, Std, UL, SUL and a NFX. The HW is in my avatar and the others follow the same color scheme. I think I like the UL the best because it will fly lower and still trick like the standard.

One, std purple skyshark, from the swap meet. Rebridled, slightly shortened US, lighter LEs. (All done by the previous owner.) No pics to share at the moment. I should rectify that.

I really like it. My favorite kite, but then again, I have a shallow bag with no boutique models.

I have a question that's R-Sky/Nirvana related. What are the NFX and KFX kites supposed to be? Just smaller scale versions of the kites? I have a little trouble understanding that product line.

Smaller versions but in reality they are different kites altogether. I can't speak for the KFX, never flown it, but I had a version of the NFX and it rocks. You can bang the tricks out of it as fast as possible and it likes it.

The KFX, or Krystal FX, is nothing to do with the Nirvana line.

You have the Nirvana which has evolved in terms of framing and build details throughout its life. Special editions were the monochrome Collectors Edition with Icone frame and the Debray Replica, partly in Aerostuff.
The NSE or Nirvana Second Edition is a more complete evolution of the full-scale Nirvana.

You then have the downsized NFX (Nirvana FX) but also the NFX Extend, which is a bit bigger but not full-sized.
And let's not forget the NFX Manga.

I'm undoubtedly missing some  :)

Mike.

The KFX, or Krystal FX, is nothing to do with the Nirvana line.

Yes, already understood. Maybe I didn't express it clearly enough, but I thought the plural on kites implied it.

I don't really have a problem understanding which of their kites are variants of originals, and I can look at the dimensions on the R Sky site. I meant (but apparently wasn't clear) "What niche do they fill? What differences do they exhibit from each other?" That level of understanding of their line evades me.

Smaller versions but in reality they are different kites altogether. I can't speak for the KFX, never flown it, but I had a version of the NFX and it rocks. You can bang the tricks out of it as fast as possible and it likes it.

This is more helpful. We had that thread a while back about size and/or aspect ratio, and the generalized flight characteristics. So, the FX models are just supposed to be zippier versions?

They say "[T]he Nirvana FX is the default freestyle kite for a new generation of pilots." So, they lay that claim at a scaled down variant of their polyvalent flagship, rather than the Toxic, which I think is targeted at freestyle. That raises my eyebrows. (At least they're not claiming every one of their kites as the "default choice for a new generation." At least they're being clear at what they promote as their elite models.)

My understanding of R Sky kites is:
"Polyvalent" (which term I had never heard of until I learned of the Nirvana): Nirvana, and her kin: NSE, NFX (plus Extend), Fifteen
Precision Emphasis: Krystal, KFX (not really certain on this one, as "precision" appears not to be used on their English pages for these kites -- they still do most tricks, right?)
Freestyle Emphasis: Toxic
And a few entry-level, inexpensive kites that we're probably all beyond.

Or am I wrong on some of these? Do all the FX versions lose precision, and become more freestyle just by nature of their size?

It's probably the broadest sport kite product line I've seen. That could be good or bad. There's something to be said for having a lot of options, but the number of options leaves me a little confused, especially with the mild language barrier. (Their English is not bad, but it is unnatural.)

Anyway, feel free to re-rail this thread.

So, the FX models are just supposed to be zippier versions?

I've got both an NFX and a KFX and would agree with this.  Smaller, faster, more agile, easier tricks in my opinion.  They generally require a bit more wind than their larger counterparts, but also have a higher end  due to being smaller with less pull.  Precision wise, they do not match their larger brothers, but its still pretty darn good if you have decent wind.

The KFX comes in different wind range versions - I've got a LW which is just an amazing kite.

"What niche do they fill? What differences do they exhibit from each other?"
Take two.

The Nirvana and NSE are full on competition kites meant to do everything and do it well. And be able to combine them. They are serious kites for serious flying.

The NFX range are meant for smacking about. Tricks and slack lines.

The NFX Extend/Manga is for serious minded tricks or a more playful competition. As you see fit.

And then you get into the wind range versions. And then you get into pimped or dumbed down frames. But that's the broad families covered.

Few people have been disappointed by the performance of the Nirvana range. They might quibble over nuance but it's hard to go properly wrong with any of them.

Mike,
then there's the Fifteen.....

John .... please feel free to add photographic content to your wish list aspirations after posting the photo you opened this thread with  ;) Crimes against the retina

As for NSE's they really need tuning to get the best out of them. I have even made a NSE variable vent which I think flies better than the stock HW model which is under framed and over vented. I have modded all of mine and the std s modded version I have is just fantastic. It probably took me a year to hit the sweet spot on the mods  8)

Here you go Harvey.

That Opium is my favorite R-Sky kite by a wide margin.
Although Darren's Nirvana is better than any other I've flown.
Both of those B/W's were trained by RandyG.
Hmmm, I should Photoshop Kent's Krystal FX into that photo.

The Fifteen is what we used to refer to round my way as "a pub idea". It's an NSE Extend fiddled with so there's no tailweight because........ ummm. :-[

Then again "niche" is a French word  ;)

I've had two, own none.

Some odd 2007 generation of the STD (blue), and a UL (purple).

I thoroughly enjoyed the standard in the right wind.  Suppose that could be said about a lot of different kites, but when the wind was right for the std it was joy.  It's a very beautiful kite up in the sky too, which added to the enjoyment of flying it.

Winds were not right often enough here in the middle of the country to justify keeping them.

I own 7 Nirvana's

I have one of the first ones Steve brought over back when there was a shortage of black ripstop. This one is purple and rubin, just could not bring myself to buy a "earth tone" one.

Also have one of the four Debray replicas that Steve had for sale.

The rest are a STD, vented, UL and SUL. The 7th Nirvana is a NSE. I also have two other R Sky kites.

I've owned 4. A NSE & an NFX sport, both sold! Wasn't a fan of the NSE. Loved the NFX Sport, sold it Only due to replacing it with an NFX Extend! Then there is the Manga! Just mailed my NFX Extend, as a replacement, to a friend who was wearing out their NFX Extend due to all the flying it gets! The Manga stays with me until someone pries my cold dead fingers away from it!  :D

Did I forget to mention it's been my #1 favorite for awhile now ...although my latest builds from David @ Kite D.E.signs are giving it a good run for the money!  ;D

Like others have already mentioned, IMO the NFX/NFX Extend/Manga (all essentially the same kite except for slight differences in framing, etc.) are the best Nirvanas of the lot!

To my knowledge...there are only 3 Manga's stateside! It's too bad they were a limited 'special order kite' exclusively sold @ Bilboquet in France, and no longer available! :(

Here's mine:
