Chromecast device only requires external power of your hdmi port is v1.3 or less. Also, if your TV has a USB port you can get power from that.

If your TV is older then a year then Chromecast would probably need external power.

Roku requires external power. As far as I know, all others do as well.

you need to know if your tv has a HDMI port for which Roku you want.   I went with the Roku 2xd as it was the top of the line for NON-HDMI port-ed tellys....(we were given a flat screen that is a wee bit old)

I did know all the other boxes require power but there would only be one cable to tv  with chromecast ( if it were in stock) Would require a dangly power wire on our set ,which also has the ports to the side not directly in the rear.

Picked up the Roku Friday on the way home . Set up a pain, but easy. Kind of like alphabet frogger . Have hardly found channels we want to load but we mainly got it to bring netflix in. I have turned in PBS and pandora.

List of good channels. I like Crackle, Vudu and Flixter.

had a friend over for dinner and we started tio play You Don't Know Jack. I played this years ago on the PC and it's a lot of fun. I ended up buying some game pack for around $5.00. Loads of fun when you are drinking.
