Welcome to the GWTW Forum.
Guests (non-registered users) can view the forum but are unable to post.  If you don't have anything to say then why would you bother to register?
One of the most popular sections of the GWTW Forum has long been the Swap Meet.  A great place to sell old, seldom flown kites or to get great deals on used (gently flown) kites.  Only registered users can see the Swap Meet section, let alone wheel and deal.  1000's (literally) of kites have changed hands thanks to the Swap Meet.
There are several more benefits to being a registered user, but you'll have to join our little community to find out all the "secrets".

Steve and Moderators:

I wanted to share an idea I had that I believe would benefit the GWTW kite flying members and kite flying community at large.

It occurred to me that a 'new' forum category which could be called "Best Flying Fields" ...or something like that would be a great way for the kite flying community to share their favorite kite flying fields closest to their hometown area. As a side benefit it would also be a good way to meet other fliers in and around where we live.

The subtopics could be a listing of every State and also have an overseas category listing countries outside the US so they could also participate! Looking something like this:
GWTW Forum > Best Flying Fields > (chosen state/country) > (major city area) ....for Example.

I had first intended on posting a forum question about my own locality requesting other forum members to share their flying fields so I could check them out ....when the above idea occurred to me. I wouldn't imagine that the idea would be too difficult to implement on the existing GWTW forum.

Does anyone else think my idea is worth consideration? Please share your thoughts!

Thanks Allen. I wasn't aware of this site but still think the idea I suggested could be more personal ...on a member to member basis! I wonder how many others have never heard of this site as well.

Edited: I just used this site with my zip code and there were NO locations listed in a 25 mile area and ONLY 2 listed above Trenton,NJ in a 50 mile area! I know for certain there has to be more flying fields than listed on this site! My own particular field wasn't listed & I can't believe there aren't many more than 1 in my own area ...in a 25 mile radius!

The "This Old Kite Field" area could be expanded on:

"A place to talk about your favorite kite field or to arrange a meet-up with local flyers"

But it's not as searchable if there were large numbers of entries. The kite map site had a big launch a few years ago, but I don't know how many people use it.

I'm fairly familiar with the forum here but I had to look several times to find the "This Old Kite Field" area! I wasn't aware it even existed!

I seem to remember something similar on the old GWTW forum. I remember checking out Bill's flying field by the river by Philly.

I like Bill's suggestion of creating categories. Maybe State/City/Country might be too specific. How about geographically? I know that New England has Hamonnassett in CT and NJ has Liberty State Park in Jersey City. I'm in upstate NY and I got a suggestion for Malwyck Park in Scotia which seemed pretty decent for the one time I was there.

Anywhere that Steve would choose to place the topic would be fine with me but this is a GREAT idea.  In our area we actually started a kite club (Central Florida Kite Club) on the same idea.  There are 20 people in 20 fields wondering where every one is, I'd love to have someone to fly with.  Being in Central Florida, "Happiest Place on Earth", we get a lot of request from flyers around the country and world for places to fly.  Make sure we know where it is when the link is up I'll be spending a lot of time there.  Thanks again for another great idea to spread kiting and help forum members.

I still think the kitemap.org is your best bet. It is already started and a database. They ask good questions so you're not going on anyone's private property without permission. The only way to expand the listings is if we do it. No one is going to make a pre-loaded app of kite flying fields/beaches. If everyone adds their own or favorite fields it will get populated quickly with more locations. Wikipedia started small (relatively).
