One of the most popular sections of the GWTW Forum has long been the Swap Meet.  A great place to sell old, seldom flown kites or to get great deals on used (gently flown) kites.  Only registered users can see the Swap Meet section, let alone wheel and deal.  1000's (literally) of kites have changed hands thanks to the Swap Meet.
There are several more benefits to being a registered user, but you'll have to join our little community to find out all the "secrets".

Okaaayyy... So cids... I'm as big a Benson fan boy as the next guy, and it is certainly the sort of flying that I do, well.. as well as I can do it... But...

Did you watch the videos?

Richard Debray ... pffft !

Watch these - from NJSKC 06 ... OMFG !

Thanks Fraz
Well, at least Debray would have a good laugh if he saw that.  I wish like hell it was even were remotely in the same league as Richard.  Also wish there had been some wind the day that ballet video was shot, not that it would have made much of a difference....

I was probably at the height of my flying skills when this Machine demo was filmed back in '05:
GothMachine032709

And it still doesn't come up anywhere close to Debray or Mayet, even on their worst days.

Those guys were the best in the business back then, and still are now.

You're way too modest Ron, at the Freestyle World Cup in 05, you were the best non-French flyer and the gap wasn't that wide.

Sorry. I'm new to the kite scene and I thought there is only one type of kite competition...the so-called Technical Freestyle. Now I knew that there is a Ballet competition for the more expressive flying style.

May be it is me but I thought if the flier makes the kite flying like a bird or a living thing, then he is a darn good flier.

I think the longer you fly, the more appreciation you'll have for Debray's skills. That kind of kite control is something every flier should aspire to.

Ron,

You're the best comp flyer I ever met. You've got nothing to hang your head down about.

Sorry. I'm new to the kite scene and I thought there is only one type of kite competition...

The original form, know as IRB or STACK style, has separate Precision and Ballet elements which can be combined for an overall winner or kept apart.

Also:
Crazy Cup/It's A Trick Out/Hot Tricks Shootout - head to head knockout format
Tricks Party - what M. Debray was doing
a variety of Trick <insert name here> formats in the UK
and not forgetting.... Virtual Freestyle  Grin

You can fly however you like in each format but the winning routine will need to be tailored to each type's scoring criteria.

Thats really cool. You could do a pairs thing where each flyer holds a handle in one hand and alternatingly backspin cascade away.

That looks like Martin (MAMA74) doing the one handed back spins.

It is.... I know for sure  Wink

Why this video would end up in topic about Debray, I don't quite understand! I'm nowhere near his level of flying  Smiley

i put it here because the discussion was loosely based on flying for competition vs flying for personal enjoyment, and it's very clear in your videos you're having fun flying your kite.

in my estimation, the person having the most fun is the best kite flier.

Yeah.

Don't sell yourself short Mr. G.
Thanks Jim.  Believe me, I'm not.  I have (had?) some skills, but I competed against Debray and friends a couple times and I know they're in a different league.  Every sport has its people who are off the charts, whether through genetic gifts, unlimited time and desire to train, whatever.  In kiting, guys like Debray and Mayet are the real deal.
