Of DIY kite building...
Let us say that I want to pay someone to make a kite from a public plan. What are the rules on this?

personally i would just keep as quiet about it as possible.....
i do not think that there would be any problems with it....as long as you are not going to then sell the kites afterward....

Depends on how public "public" is.
If we're talking about something like a rok plan (of which there are many variations) you could probably work something out.
If you're talking about one of the sport kite plans that designers have been good enough to offer to the public, they're all going to have their own terms of use you should follow. If it's not spelled out somewhere, you could ask if what you have in mind is OK.
I'm assuming the person building for you would be charging you something, even if it's just the cost of materials.

I don't see a problem if you asked a person to build you "a kite" from a public plan. If you were asking to have them built by the dozen..........  Denny |

If the plan is truly in the public domain, I don't see how it matters if you choose to pay someone to build it for you or not. You could say you're paying materials (which you would if you built it yourself), and paying someone for the service of putting it all together for you. I just don't see how this is an issue.

I'd be surprised if anyone willing to publish their plans would object to you getting someone else to build one for you. If in doubt ask.
While I can't speak for anyone else, all I'd care about would be someone building them commercially (i.e. in quantity).

The only snag is that I was thinking about the Derefat L'Organic. I read somewhere here that he made a sail for someone that I am assuming he was paid for. Am I correct in assuming that it is proper to ask him to make it?

It's actually 85 euros, and yes with the framing consisting of P200's it's actually a screaming deal.
Speaking of screaming the V-Masque sails are going for dirt also. Makes you wonder what is coming of L'Atelier.
