Althought I never got to take a ride in that freakin' awesome airplane, I did get to fuel it a couple of times on charter fights going through Hawaii.  One British Airways, the other Air France. Still awesome jets to this day.

closest I ever got to flying on it was standing a couple of hundred yards from the end of the runway at Heathrow (one of London's airports) when it was taking off

I was on a training course at the time, and they had a break every day when it took off, as you couldn't hear the trainer talking.

Doesn't the space shuttle hold the speed record?

IIRC, the space shuttle holds the record for a space plane, meaning operating in and out of the atmosphere.

The SR-71 holds the record for planes with "air-breathing" engines, again, IIRC.  The X-15 went to Mach 5, but was purely rocket powered.
